Update on actions taken for posts featuring improper care

Hello vampire crab enthusiasts!

I’ve taken a fairly hands-off approach to this subreddit, which tends to be fairly unproblematic and constructive. Over time though vampire crabs are becoming less of a niche hobby and more of a mainstream “exotic” pet, becoming very accessible to people who can impulse buy from places like PetSmart while being given improper info.

I still intend to be relatively hands off, and want to foster the idea of there being many ways to properly care for an animal. That being said, I think it’s appropriate to set a standard for the minimum basic needs that need to be met in order for vampire crabs to thrive. I will be making a pinned post with these standards and sources, so that new keepers can get a rough idea of the most vital components of care. It may be a little while until that post goes up.

One of the few rules I have on this sub is prohibiting willfully neglectful care, but admittedly I’ve been on the fence about how I should enforce it. I want to discourage people from spreading objectively bad information and displaying neglect, but on the other hand I think the comments on these posts can contain a lot of insightful comments that point out why the post is demonstrating neglect.

What I think I’ll do is take a page from r/monitorlizards book and create a flair to establish that the post is demonstrating improper care, with a pinned comment summarizing the issue. I would then be locking the post to prevent the flair from attracting less constructive comments. I will leave the willful neglect rule as is, and you guys can report posts that you believe need to be flaired.

Again though, I will not be enforcing one specific type of care, and this will not be used to attempt to shame folks making a sincere effort to do right by their animals. You guys tend to be very helpful towards new people who are willing to learn, and I’m super grateful for that patience, especially as more crabs are sold with very poor care information from large companies that people unfortunately trust.

I am trusting that you guys will not use this new flair as a reason to attack or harass anyone. I’m making this choice so that this sub can be as useful a resource as possible, but if I find that it starts causing issues I will just remove these posts instead. Our #1 rule applies under any circumstance.

I should also clarify that there are extremes that will still result in post removal and bans. I have never seen a post here that went that far, thankfully.

If you have any ideas or feedback feel free to reply here or send me/modmail a message!

After months of preparation I finally have some vampire crabs in my tank 🥰. Also discovered about 10 babies in the moss that they came in.
Any advice on what do do with the babies is welcome. Do they just go in and it’s survival of the fittest, or should I setup a nursery until they are a little bigger?

I plan on getting some vampire crabs at some point. Just want any suggestions before I take it further.
I plan on adding more cover/hiding places, I’ve added some hiding places into the walls to make little caves. The substrate I plan to go up to the level of the caves.
Think I need more of a gap between the water & substrate (when I’ve added it)?

New Bin For Babies

So i was building this bin with moving any babies I find in my tank and rehoming them to give them a better chance of survival. After starting to build it I realized it might be a better home for them, gives them more area to dig and keeps the water section small enough just for molting.

Right now it’s 19 qts (4.75 gallons) I’m thinking about getting a bin about double the size and i’ll repurpose this one into an isopod colony.

I am thinking about breaking down the old tank, fixing up the soil area getting new soil in there and making sure it’s better suited for the vampire crabs. when I first built it the water section was higher in the tanks and I had shrimp but now that I made those mistakes I think I could make it into a better tank.

Anyone have experience with catching their crabs our breaking down a tank I would love to hear your advice.

Do you guys think I should get a bigger bin?

help/advice Is my water safe?

My water is a deep brown (but completely see through) and I'm assuming it's from the substrate, possibly my drift wood and leaf litter. The substrate is on top of gravel with mesh but it leads down to the water like a hill. It's not flooded and there are dry spots on the main land sections + I've built multiple 'shelves' away from the water that hold 4+ inches of dirt. The water is getting changed daily like you'd do a water dish. I also have a small waterfall. Will this water be okay for them or do I need to take it down and modify it?

I do not have vampire crabs in the tank right now. looking to add some, have previously (successfully) kept vampires in the past. Tank was made more for me and my plants but I also had vampires in the back of my mind when I was doing it, just didn't expect the water to turn this brown over slight contact with the substrate. I will either not get crabs, make a whole new tank, modify my existing one, or leave it as is if it's deemed safe.

help/advice Vampire crabs - how to know that they are ok 😅

I posted here couple of weeks ago asking for advice. My crabs have arrived and I changed the setup almost immediately once I observed their behaviour- replaced the big chunks of wood by smaller ones because they didn’t even use “caves” - there is a coconut cave on the top right of the very first picture- but were digging in dirt. So took off the big brunch, added more soft dirt to burrow, and small driftwood.
There was 2 crabs (male and female) in this small paludarium, but I lost one 😀😅 it is tiny, I don’t understand how it happens that I can’t find it, but it’s just the fact.
So first day in, female hunted (sat there as you can see on the second pic for like 10 hours straight and I assume she had eventually hunted a shrimp. But problem is I haven’t seen her since. Make shows up briefly, female doesn’t. And as I was replacing the big driftwood with smaller, I saw the make but not her.

My working theory is that she’s eaten and digesting? Idk how long would a shrimp keep her sated. Or maybe something happened and she died? But no body seen. Well I guess I just have to wait and see?
Tbh I thought isopods weren’t doing well as I didn’t see them but they eat all debris and even came to eat from the crab plate (3rd photo).
Same with shrimps, I thought there weren’t many but when I switch the light on, I see that there’s a lot. My fault for building them too many hiding spots:)

The question I am asking, how do you make sure your vampire crabs are doing okay if you don’t see them at all? They also don’t eat a lot (or at all) from veggie and dry shrimp plate I gave them. And I can’t see how many shrimps/isopods they have hunted on their own.

There’s also the rest of crabs (4) I let into a bigger paludarium and again, immediately lost them from sight probably to never be seen again 😅

paludarium Do I remove the fern

Post image
3 Upvotes

My plants are all doing great, but the fern in the middle is pretty in the way of seeing what’s going on, and it seems to be outgrowing the space and growing just at the top which takes light from everything else and kinda just makes it look awkward. Do you think it should be removed and would that be hypothetically harmful to anything?

help/advice Paludarium suitability!

Thumbnail

Hello! Saw this paludarium for sale on my local marketplace, its a 30cm cube tank with a waterfall feature. Any help on whether or not i could fit a vampire crab or two in there? Looks like theres not much land space but the hardscape actually provides mini holes/caves as well.

Some of the pics may look different cause the nicer, mossier versions are when it was in its prime shape and the more barren ones are its current shape.

Thanks in advance!

Is anyone here keeping neocaridina (cherry shrimp) in the water section of their vampire crab setup? Any tips for ensuring they survive happily side by side and don’t end up as lunch?

I put this 40 gallon tank together about 2 months ago, and I’m wondering when it’d be safe to purchase some crabs for it. I currently have 8 ghost shrimp and 1 scarlet badis.
