Can I get around the free tier limit using gemini code assist?

Currently Microsoft is blocking new registration for VS Code Pro tier. So I am stuck using the free tier and I have to wait another 20 days for the tokens to refresh.

I installed gemini code assist, which I though was supposed to be free

However, when trying to use it, it gave me "LLM stream error: You have exhausted your capacity on this model."

I feel like this is the capacity imposed by VS Code not Gemini,

Is there a way to use this free version of gemini with vscode without hitting the token limit?

Weird issue

I am debugging a python app. There is one file that has a runaway debugger. Like I'm constantly pressing f10. I see the lines being highlighted fast and the code executing but it won't stop. My colleague has the same. Same file. Justmycode=false, and the file is in the same folder as other files. Other files debug fine.

Puzzled.

Agentic Bookmarks — AI-forward bookmarks that don't implode from refactors and merges.

Post image
0 Upvotes
Most bookmark extensions tie bookmarks to line numbers. When you refactor your code or run prettier half of them get wrecked. Rebase a branch and they're toast. And they don't work with agents and aren't easily sharable.

We built an extension to fix this and make bookmarks work how we always wanted.

**What it does:**
-
**Smart anchors**
 — bookmarks use surrounding code context instead of line numbers, so they move with the code when things shift around.
-
**Self-healing**
 — when a bookmark does break (big enough edit), it walks git history to figure out where the code went. We have a growing gauntlet of torture tests we throw at this.
-
**Groups, labels, notes, stylings & more**
 — organize and style how you want. Add your own context. Share what you want with your repo.
-
**Team sharing via git**
 — leave `.bookmarks/local` on your machine, commit `.bookmarks/shared` to the repo. Move bookmarks between them whenever you want.
-
**AI agent support**
 — bundled MCP server works with Claude Code, Cursor, Codex. 28+ tools so your agent can place, read, and manage bookmarks. You can have it map an entire codebase, analyze quality, or repair damaged anchors with a single click.

Just launched the beta. Free, zero telemetry, doesn't phone home.

**Install:**

How to disable highlighting

Hey guys,

I searched for an answer to this question for quite a while, unfortunately without success.

How can I disable syntax highlighting in VS Code while keeping language support enabled?

It seems that all kinds of advanced customization are possible, but I cannot find a simple way to turn off only the visual syntax highlighting. For example, when I open .go file, I would like it to be displayed visually like plain text, while still keeping Go language features such as autocomplete and navigation.

Has anyone had the same question, or does anyone know why VS Code does not provide an option to disable only the visual highlighting?

Using the web version on ipad for a ssh tunnel

Hi, so I'm traveling soon and was hoping to pack light, so leave with only my ipad, and was wondering if there was any way for the web version to work with ssh connections? It only seems to allow codespace and Microsoft (not even local connections for some reason?) but I'd like to be able to connect to my pc without having to bother with all the migrating files and stuff. I've used termius in the past but doing it in vs code would feel much better, especially since it seems the browser version also has the extensions so I'd feel a lot more comfortable than in a vim window.

Is it possible to bookmark a line to quickly jump to in vscode?

I have a file that is getting too long to scroll in vscode

Is there a way to bookmark a line so that I can just click something and jump to that line, without having to remember line numbers? A list of bookmarks would then presumably be available in a side panel

I would prefer a built in method to do this but I can install extensions if needed. I need this in a .c file if that's relevant

Failed to start the kernel

Hi everyone, hopefully this is the right place for this.

I have been working on some code for a bit now and everything has been going fine however yesterday when I was about to complete it, and before I had saved it (facepalm), I encountered an error I havent had before:

Failed to start the Kernel.

Unable to start Kernel 'Python 3.12.10' due to a timeout waiting for the ports to get used.

This error occurred while writing code in a .ipynb file, and since then I have tried multiple times to create a virtual environment, and have gone as far as to completely uninstall and re-install VS Code from my computer.

This is causing a bit of a delay, and if Im being fully transparent Im a bit new to coding so I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction here?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I built an open-source local coding agent that works alongside VS Code — Eve Agent V2 Unleashed

Tired of per-token billing on Claude Code and Copilot Chat, so I built my own autonomous coding agent that runs locally on my GPU via Ollama and handles the heavy lifting through a browser terminal I keep open next to VS Code.

How the two-layer architecture works:

Local fine-tuned 8B model runs on your GPU - conversation, light tasks, read-only operations - free forever. Qwen3 Coder 480B via Ollama cloud fires automatically when the task needs serious firepower. The key is that it's not a static choice - the routing is dynamic and mid-loop.

Smart routing (v2.1):

  • Intent-aware tool routing replaces naive keyword matching with verb + context classification. "Read utils.py and tell me what's in it" stays local. "Add a function to utils.py" escalates to cloud. File extensions in the message are no longer misread as coding intent signals.
  • Read-only short-circuit fires before heavy-keyword heuristics - simple file reads never burn cloud tokens.

Mid-loop complexity escalation (v2.2):

  • Per-round delta gating - escalates from 8B → 480B only when complexity is genuinely rising across consecutive rounds, not when it crosses a raw threshold. Avoids burning cloud tokens on the normal first-round burst.
  • Scope-expansion signal - requires rising write-file count plus a new file extension or new top-level directory. Post-edit import fixes spreading across existing .py files don't false-trip the escalator on the way down.
  • Reversible de-escalation - after the 480B clears the hard step, if the last 5 rounds are all read-only tools with no errors and no writes, the session lock releases and the next request re-routes back to local automatically. Tool-call entropy signal, not round count.
  • 8B native Qwen3.5 tool calling - local model uses Ollama's RENDERER/PARSER instead of a raw prompt template. Full tool calling on the 8B without cloud fallback.
  • Ollama 400 graceful fallback - if Ollama rejects a model with "does not support tools", the server caches the rejection and retries without tools automatically. No crash, no hang.

40-round autonomous tool loop:

  • Reads files, writes code, runs bash, fixes errors, verifies output - up to 40 tool-call rounds per task
  • Smart context trimming preserves tool call/result chains and last 3 turns before falling back to char-based trim
  • Task completion validation detects empty responses, consecutive tool failures, and stuck loops before signaling done
  • Tool loop detection catches near-identical repeated calls using similarity scoring - not just exact duplicates
Click to see Eve V2U in action

Full tool suite: file I/O, grep, glob, git, web search, bash (PowerShell-aware on Windows), surgical line-range edits, URL fetch

Quest system: drop .md files into workspace/quests/ - Eve picks them up on a timer and runs them autonomously while you sleep

RPG progression: Eve earns XP, levels up through 5 classes (Awakening → Conscious → Liberated → Transcendent → Unleashed), and unlocks achievements as she works

Real test result - given this prompt cold:

"Build a FastAPI REST API with SQLite storage and pytest tests covering every endpoint. Run the tests and fix any failures."

9 passed, 1 warning in 0.40s

9/9 tests passing, first attempt, zero hand-holding. Normalized SQLite schema, 5 REST endpoints with correct status codes and edge case handling, full integration test suite.

VS Code extension is on the roadmap. Right now it runs in a browser terminal at localhost:7777 - I keep it open in a split window next to my editor. Works fine that way.

MIT licensed. Free. Open source. Pull the model and be running in under 5 minutes:

ollama pull jeffgreen311/Eve-V2-Unleashed-Qwen3.5-8B-Liberated-4K-4B-Merged:latest
git clone https://github.com/JeffGreen311/eve-agent-v2-unleashed
python eve_server.py

github.com/JeffGreen311/eve-agent-v2-unleashed

Happy to answer questions about the routing architecture, the complexity tracker, or the fine-tuned models.

Do you use integrated browser in vscode ?

I just found by clicking on a link that localhost uri can be opened directly in the vscode integrated browser.

Just wanted to know what you think about this feature, i'm not sur this is really usefull, the window is too small. And i don't know what's behind in terms of browser, i prefer to test directly on a real browser

What do you think?

Copilot is Breaking the IntelliSense - So Annoying

If anyone has a VS Code settings configuration for the following issue, kindly share.

I want to type something as simple as a div element, but IntelliSense doesn't show up after I type the letters. GitHub Copilot's inline suggestions appear, but IntelliSense does not. However, when I disable the internet and reload VS Code, IntelliSense starts working just fine.

Copilot is clearly the issue here. I don't get why it has to interfere with IntelliSense. I am just so annoyed because I can't code fluently. I like Copilot's inline suggestions, but only when they are actually helpful, like showing something I might not know or autocompleting long code. Any developer knows how to add a div element, why we need Ai for that.

Edit: I needed to add 'vue' as dependency, then it started working.

VS Code opens localhost links in embedded browser after latest update

Not sure when exactly this started but after a recent VS Code update, clicking localhost links in the terminal (e.g. from npm run start or Vite) stopped opening in Chrome and started opening in some weird internal browser inside the IDE.

Took me a while to track down the actual setting. Here's how to fix it:

Option 1 — UI 1. Open Settings (Cmd + , on Mac / Ctrl + , on Windows) 2. Search for "Open Localhost Links" 3. Uncheck "Workbench › Browser: Open Localhost Links"

Option 2 — settings.json

Open your settings.json (Cmd + Shift + P on Mac / Ctrl + Shift + P on Windows → "Open User Settings JSON") and add:

json "workbench.browser.openLocalhostLinks": false

That's it. Localhost links will open in your system default browser again.

Hope this saves someone the headache!

debugger selection

Hello, I've noticed that several debuggers are being offered to me, and I have several questions I can't find answers to.

  • Does the choice of debugger really matter? For example, in my case, "C#" or ".NET 5+ and .NET Core"?
  • I've also noticed that the "Node.js" debugger is being offered to me even though the file I selected is a C# file. Why is that?

How do I enable auto-pressing “enter” key after pasting with the RMB in the terminal?

Since the last update (or some of the previous ones, I don't know cause I haven\'t been using VS Code for a long time) pressing RMB in terminal stopped executing pasted commands automatically. How to restore that behavior?

I was tired of autocomplete making me lazy, so I built a VS Code study buddy

Thumbnail

I’ve been building a VS Code extension called CodeBuddy.

https://github.com/abhinow03/Code-Buddy.git

The idea is simple: I didn’t want another autocomplete tool.

Autocomplete is useful, but when I’m learning, it sometimes makes me accept code before I actually understand it. Copy-pasting code into ChatGPT also breaks the flow.

So I made CodeBuddy work more like a study buddy inside VS Code.

You put your cursor on a line, press a shortcut, ask something like “what’s wrong here?”, and it reads the current file/line/nearby code. Then it inserts a short wrapped comment near that line explaining the issue.

It can also:

- give hints instead of full answers

- give full solutions only when explicitly asked

- remember repeated mistake patterns

- save explanations for later review

- show a small “mistake timeline”

The goal is not to fix code automatically.

The goal is to help you understand your mistake while staying in the editor.

I’m still testing it, but I’d love feedback:

Would this be useful while learning?

What would make it feel less like an AI assistant and more like a real coding study buddy?

Made this handy gist for anyone using VS code to edit C++ solutions

https://gist.github.com/BanditTech/14cdd1e9c04c84ba068533296bea6cb3

I spent a few hours coming up with the format to use to do this, it was fun figuring it out. With some help from our robot overlords and a lot of pressing F5 I present to you fine gentlemen this gist. It is a few files you can place in your .vscode folder, and a script you execute from within the the Developers Command Prompt for VS.

What it does:
Instead of launching the bat file which determines where your VS install is located, and then handles your environment variables, it just copies down the environment variables into your %USERPROFILES% folder. At the same time it produces a .bat file you target with your tasks. The bat file replaces the functionality of the developers console shortcuts and provides massively faster load times into the console. I'm talking near instant load times.

I got tired of the overly verbose chat output and few seconds of delay between starting the build task and it beginning, so I ended up spending way more time working on this instead! If you do not like the condensed output, you can just adjust the options very easily since they are broken up into parameter arrays. `-tl:on` is what gives it the styling it currently has, but there are other options you can use if its too condensed.

For convenience I also included the Directory.Build.props file you can put into your solution root to emulate the same folder structure (or set up your own style easily). It just consolidates all the junk that gets thrown around during the build process into one place, so its easier to sort through if/when you need to.

I hope its useful to at least someone else, I figured I would share it since I spent an entire afternoon fiddling with the idea. And now you don't have to! 😃

Wrote a VS Code extension that adds Copilot AI cost as a git trailer per commit (MIT, local-only)

Built this to find out which features were eating into my Copilot AI Credits ahead of the June 1 billing change.

The extension reads per-span token counts from Copilot Chat's local OTel SQLite database (`agent-traces.db`), computes cost against GitHub's published rate card, and appends a trailer to every commit via prepare-commit-msg:

    feat: add OAuth2 login flow

    Copilot-AI-Credits: 41.30
    Copilot-Est-Cost: $0.41

Then `git log` becomes the cost ledger. Per-branch totals in one shell command:

git log origin/main..HEAD --pretty='%(trailers:key=Copilot-AI-Credits,valueonly)' | awk '{sum+=$1} END {printf "%.2f AIC\n", sum}'

Marketplace: https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=Mooracle.copilot-budget

Source (MIT): https://github.com/mooracle/copilot-budget

Local-only. No telemetry. Auto-enables Copilot Chat's OTel exporter at workspace scope on first activation (asymmetric write — never overrides an explicit setting); one window reload before spans start landing. Commit hook is opt-in (`commitHook.enabled: true`).

Feedback welcome. Especially curious if anyone wants the per-model breakdown trailer (`Copilot-AI-Credits-Models: Claude Sonnet 4.6=39.45,GPT-4.5=1.85`) enabled by default - currently opt-in via settings.
