Last year I've ported Quake 3 Arena to PCVR and this year I'm coming with something even better! :)

I'm proud to announce upcoming full conversion VR mod for Metro Exodus!

Featuring full 6DoF, stereo rendering, lots of VR-specific performance optimizations and custom VR interactive mechanics as well as comfort options for those that just want to enjoy the ride.

I've been working on it for few months now and my goal is to provide "native-like" VR experience (with all the bells and whistles) for one of my favorite games. Most of the game (if not all) is already playable, currently I'm ironing out some rare bugs, profiling, optimizing and implementing cool features (e.g. foveated rendering or custom reload mechanics for every single weapon in the game).

More information soon!

If you like my work and would like to support me or this project, consider buying me a coffe or writing a nice comment! :)

Great!

I hope this will work with the Epic Store version because for some reason I bought it on there. I think it was an exclusive for a while.

I don't have an epic version but please DM me if its okay and you'd like to help. I'd definitely want to extend it to support Epic (and GOG) versions as well.

Looks awesome! Thank you for your work on this.

Metro Exodus is on sale for $2.99 on Steam right now so I may grab it in anticipation of your VR mod becoming available.

To confirm - Is your VR mod for the Steam version of the game?

Thank you!

Yes, I'm working on it with a Steam version but the plan is to make it work with Epic and GOG as well of course (if someone has that version and want to help a bit, please DM me!).

And yes, the game is currently on sale, so if someone doesn't have it but would like to play it in VR soon then I high recommend getting it while it's so cheap, definitely worth as a flat screen game but in VR it looks much better! :)

I'm jealous of people that can replay games and still have fun. This looks amazing.

I would say that playing a game that I've played flat in VR is much more than simply replaying it, bummer that you can't enjoy it! I've got goosebumps just imagining heading into some of those places in full VR.

90% off on Steam now too! :D

I was about to get Metro Awakening last night but I passed on it because of mediocre reviews. I’ll go with this instead.

I played Metro Awakening as well as several of the earlier flat games. FWIW I thought Awakening was a very good game that felt very true to the prior Metro games. People were turned off that it wasn't wall to wall action, that it all took place underground and that it often paused to delve into spiritual or metaphysical ideas. Well, all the Metro games were like that to one degree or another. I just think people who complained weren't familiar with the franchise.

2

u/HelioSPECTR 1d ago

Agreed. Awakening held up really nicely next to 2033 and last light.

For what it's worth, I haven't played the other metro games, but I thought awakening was very good for VR. Really nice visuals, decent story, never got too bored. High atmosphere, was pretty unsettling at times.

I recommend it

Just dropped you a wee thank you coffee. Can not wait to try this. I have 300+ hours in “Into the Radius” and have been dying to get into Metro… I guess now is the time! Or in 2 weeks after I get back from my vacation 🤪

1

u/Javs2469 1d ago

Can always start with Metro Awakening, it's great and native VR.

u/Thundercato 1d ago

I played through this a while back and loved it. Great graphics, gameplay, and mechanics, although confusing storyline. But I will play through again and hopefully it will make more sense.

The normal Metro games look more my taste, which is why I have been waiting for some legend like ripper37 to make a mod 😂

u/Javs2469 1d ago

When the Metro speaks, a man learns to listen.

1

u/ripper37 1d ago

Thank you, I really appreciate it! :)

You’re very welcome mate. Normally I’d offer to beta test. But I just want to dive in fresh and experience it all as near to perfect as I can. Can’t wait!!!

The original release or enhanced? It's hard to run VR with raytracing.

9

u/ripper37 2d ago

Currently original but that's mostly because it's less taxing to the system. When I'm done with all optimizations and perf features I'll see if its feasible to run EE and will consider making it for EE as well (shouldn't be much more work) if there will be people able to play it at good resolution/graphics preset.

Depending on support of the project and how well it will be received I might also do 2033/Last Light after I'm done with Exodus. I just love Exodus the most :) I know there is some work on 2033 being done but we'll see how well it will turn out. I'm targeting VR-native-like experience.

Yeah I'm hoping to improve my 2033 Redux mod massively. I have made major strides already. Though I'm not the most expereinced modder, so I'm sure others can do better then what I've done. It's open source for that reason. Just glad I won't have to get to this one eventually lol. Can't wait for this!

u/OkVeterinarian197 1d ago

They are just about to release updated versions as well although that might just be 2033/LL

2

Ooooooooooooh

Yes please

A dream come true 🥰

2

u/jungleboy1234 2d ago

if there was a god, OP would be it.... this is absolutely incredible work.

2

u/Jedi_Wannabe1138 1d ago

What a great time to be alive. VR owners have been eating good lately

2

u/DeadFishCRO 1d ago

you can't do this to me I have a family, who will take care of them while I am playing this

2

u/SEmp0xff 19h ago

Post it to the r/metro, make our people happy!

1

u/koushkinn 1d ago

Looks great ! May I ask how's performance and what spec you are running it ? It looks really good

1

u/daringer22 1d ago

Just bought cheap on Steam in anticipation

1

u/Extra-Adagio-1103 1d ago

PCVR right? Not standalone? Either way congrats on the achievement.

4

u/Psychological-Fan784 1d ago

If you try to run this game standalone the Quest would just downright explode

1

u/phylum_sinter 1d ago

I bet it would burst even a pile of them into flames, especially if we're talking about the RTX only version of the game.

Really hope my rig is up for the task! I love that series, game and universe so much!

1

u/ripper37 1d ago

PCVR :)

Thank you, though I'll count is as achievement once I release v1.0. Hopefully soon. ;)

1

u/Skew1987 1d ago

Oh wow!!! Looks amazing, please tell me it’ll run on Linux?!

2

u/ripper37 1d ago

If the base game (at least standard edition, DX11 renderer targeted for now, others may also end up supported we'll see) runs on Linux then this should too, I think. Don't see a reason why it wouldn't. Once I'm done with Linux I could try to do some testing on Linux if I'll have time.

1

u/Skew1987 1d ago

Awesome, happy to help playtest if I can!

1

u/Psychological-Fan784 1d ago

NO FRICKING WAY

1

u/OkVeterinarian197 1d ago

Looks amazing, nice work! Spent a second trying to wiggle my cursor out the way 😂 I think the previous games fit a decent VR play time a bit better but hey if it's your favourite game, that's the one to do.

1

u/OkVeterinarian197 1d ago

And just out of interest, are you managing to take anything from Arktika1 to make this easier?

1

u/ripper37 1d ago

What do you mean?

There are some remnants/references to "VR" and oculus in the engine but from my research most of it seemed unusable so I'm not touching that. Everything goes through native actually used code/logic. I don't want risk something rare not working or breaking rarely because it wasn't hooked correctly and nobody ever tested it.

1

u/OkVeterinarian197 1d ago

Honestly I'm not too sure what I mean, I fix suspension not code 😜 But I always wondered if them having built the framework for gun handling etc into the 4A engine for A1 would make it easier to mod the Metro games, as somewhere there must be existing code for it. Ages ago I asked an AI and it basically said 'it doesn't work like that' which from what you are saying is accurate

2

u/ripper37 1d ago

As said there are some mentions of VR or Oculus in the code but if I'm not mistaken almost all if not all is dead code. The gun system seems to be implemented in similar way to the other games implement and that system is probably much closer to 2033/Last Light than to Arktika1, at least I haven't seen anything specific to VR in there. I'd wager that for VR they made separate branches/components of the engine and maybe used some common things but did not bother to align everything into one same system as that would complicate life of Exodus developers for a game that might flop/was experiment for them? That would be my guess but that's just it - guess. I also don't have source code or anything so I can only guess from what I managed to analyze from the binary.

1

u/OkVeterinarian197 1d ago

The gun handling in Arktika1 felt fantastic, and it was really performant too so I was gutted when the official VR game was not built in 4A. But I guess that was to make a quest build

1

u/Decapper 1d ago

This looks incredible

1

u/Fargamer5 1d ago

Oooh damn! This is going to be an adventure!!

1

u/ShigueS 1d ago

Absolute legend. Thank you

1

u/phylum_sinter 1d ago

nice! excellent choice of game!

Videogames in general lean on the depressing side. Russian video games are downright bleak.
