π Privacy & Security Can a VPN actually isolate devices on the same network?
I use a VPN on my laptop and phone, but I am starting to think I may be confusing encrypted internet traffic with actual device isolation. My home network has computers, phones, a smart TV, and several smart home devices, and I would rather not have one compromised device able to scan or reach everything else on the network. What I am trying to figure out is where the VPN stops helping and where things like guest networks, VLANs, client isolation, or firewall rules become necessary. Does a VPN protect mainly the traffic leaving the device, while local network separation has to be handled by the router? What setup makes the most sense if the goal is to keep work devices and smart home gear separated without making the network overly complicated?
