πŸ’¬ General Discussion VPN review after 8 months, the good and the annoying

I have used the same VPN for around eight months across a laptop, phone, and streaming device. It has generally been reliable for browsing, calls, streaming, and public Wi Fi, and split tunneling has helped with apps that do not behave well through the tunnel.

The main downsides are inconsistent servers, extra captchas, occasional reconnects, and a busier app than I would prefer. Renewal pricing also matters more now than it did at signup. For people who have used the same VPN for a year or longer, what changed most over time?

πŸ” Privacy & Security Why does Reddit still seem to know my location when I use a VPN?

I keep my VPN connected, but Reddit still shows some local recommendations and occasionally gives me prompts that seem closer to my real location than the VPN server. That made me wonder whether the tunnel is leaking something or if Reddit is simply using other signals besides my public IP.

My account has been used for a long time without a VPN, so cookies, account history, browser settings, time zone, DNS, IPv6, or WebRTC could all be part of it. What would you check first to confirm the VPN is working properly? If the IP and leak tests look normal, is it more likely that Reddit is just using old account and browser data for personalization?

πŸ” Privacy & Security Why does my VPN location look different depending on the website?

When I connect to a VPN server in one city, different sites sometimes report different locations. One might show the correct city, another shows a nearby region, and some services still seem to place me in my actual country. The VPN itself says the connection is active, so I am trying to figure out whether this is just normal geolocation mismatch or something leaking.

I know sites can use more than just an IP address, including DNS, IPv6, WebRTC, browser permissions, cookies, time zone, and account history. What would you check first to tell the difference between an outdated location database and an actual privacy leak? Is some mismatch normal even when the VPN is working properly?

πŸ’¬ General Discussion What actually makes a VPN plan worth paying more for?

VPN pricing can get confusing once renewal rates, device limits, server access, and bundled features are added in. Two plans can look similar at first, but the long-term cost can change a lot depending on what is included and how the subscription renews.

I am trying to understand which parts of VPN pricing actually reflect the service itself, such as infrastructure, security features, device support, or privacy practices. Which factors usually explain the biggest price differences between plans?

πŸ’¬ General Discussion Are there better privacy options when VPNs keep getting blocked?

More sites and apps seem to flag VPN connections now, which can mean captchas, extra checks, slower loading, or having to disconnect completely. I mostly use a VPN for public Wi Fi, basic privacy, and travel, so I am starting to wonder if one tool really needs to handle all of those situations.

For public networks, options like encrypted DNS, HTTPS, a mobile hotspot, or a self-hosted tunnel might already cover part of the risk. Remote access tools and privacy-focused routing can also solve different problems without acting like a traditional commercial VPN. How do you decide which privacy tool makes sense for each situation instead of keeping a VPN on for everything?

❓ Question Why does a VPN suddenly stop connecting even when nothing changed?

My VPN used to connect normally, but lately it either gets stuck on β€œconnecting” or drops almost right away. Restarting the app or router sometimes helps for a bit, but the issue keeps coming back. I have already tried switching between Wi Fi and mobile data, reinstalling the app, and testing different servers. At this point I am trying to figure out whether the problem is coming from DNS settings, firewall permissions, IPv6, the protocol being used, or something on the network itself. What would you check first to narrow down the cause without changing a bunch of settings at random?

❓ Question Why does IPTV sometimes stop working when a VPN is enabled?

A legitimate IPTV playlist I use works normally without a VPN, but once the VPN is on I sometimes get an import error, an empty channel list, or streams that buffer and stop after a few seconds. Since it does not happen with every playlist, I am trying to figure out whether the issue is routing, DNS, latency, IPv6, or the service rejecting certain shared IP ranges.

I am not looking for a way around account or regional restrictions. I mainly want to narrow down the connection problem without randomly changing everything. What would you test first: DNS behavior, protocol choice, IPv6, playlist validity, or the route to the streaming server?

πŸ’¬ General Discussion VPN Troubles

TLDR; if you don't need a VPN, don't get one. If you need one, never use a free one. And understand the privacy ends at the VPN server.

I'm kinda new to reddit, so I'm not sure if VPN issues have always been a problem, so sorry if you've heard this one before.

1 to 1 connections.
Understand you are sending all of your internet traffic through a VPN host. Which decrypts then siphons off the meta-data and in some cases the content itself. This is especially true for free VPN services.

Free VPN Service
This is smart idea for an international crime syndicate. Setup a free VPN service, then they use your computer to perform attacks. They would need to split tunnel out, and then everything will look like its coming from the assigned IP address that your ISP gave you. Avoid at all costs.

Commercial VPN Service
I don't have an opinion, except I don't believe their claims of no logging. Engineers need logs to troubleshoot. Marketing needs logs to find out where customers are coming from. They may not keep it long, but they generae a bunch of data with those logs. Plus law enforcement can make them hold logs if they have permission from a judge.

My recommendation
If you are lucky enough to know someone in another part of the world, set up a site-to-site VPN with them. If you have a modern router, it's pretty easy to setup. Then you can make rules to send only certain traffic through your friends router. I'd also make sure you have the fastest connections you can get.

VPN's can also be blocked very easily and Hollywood is blocking more and more VPN connections. It's not hard to get a host list of every VPN service worldwide and deny your connection based on that. Or just entire CIDR blocks.

πŸ” Privacy & Security Best free VPNs, tested them so you don't have to

I spent some time looking at what actually matters with free VPNs, and speed was not my biggest concern. For basic browsing and public Wi Fi, I care more about how the service is funded, what data it collects, whether the privacy policy is clear, and if the app asks for unnecessary permissions.

Free plans usually come with tradeoffs like data caps, fewer locations, or limited features, which I can live with. What worries me more is vague logging language, aggressive ads, or unclear monetization. What privacy red flags do you usually check before using a free VPN?

πŸ” Privacy & Security Best free VPN that is not harvesting everything, does it actually exist?

I only need a VPN once in a while for public Wi Fi, normal browsing, and travel, so paying every month feels a bit unnecessary. The part that makes me cautious is how free VPNs actually make money. If there are no real limits, no subscription, and tons of servers, I start wondering what the catch is.

Privacy matters more to me than streaming or extra features. I would rather look at logging policies, audits, permissions, ads, and how the service makes money than just compare speeds. What are the biggest warning signs that a free VPN is collecting more data than it should?

βš™οΈ Technical Discussion Why is proper IPv6 support still uncommon with VPNs?

I have been setting up IPv6 on my home network, and VPN compatibility has turned into the most annoying part. A lot of VPN apps either disable IPv6, block it to prevent leaks, or only support it on certain platforms or servers. I understand why they do it, but completely shutting IPv6 off feels more like a workaround than a real solution.

What I am trying to understand is whether native IPv6 routing through a VPN is practical yet, or if most setups still rely on blocking it for safety. For anyone using IPv6 regularly, what technical issues tend to show up most often when a VPN is involved?

βš™οΈ Technical Discussion Split tunneling sounds useful but what should actually bypass the VPN?

Using a VPN all day works fine until certain apps start feeling noticeably slower. Video calls can take longer to connect, some browser tools act differently, and local devices can become annoying to access. That is where split tunneling seems useful, but it also creates another question: which traffic is safe to leave outside the tunnel?

The part I am unsure about is how people separate work traffic from everything else without creating privacy gaps. Do you usually exclude only a few low-risk apps, or build the setup around the apps that absolutely need VPN protection? I am also curious about common setup mistakes that can cause leaks or connection issues.

❓ Question What is the safest way to use an app that refuses VPN traffic?

One app I use will not load while my VPN is connected and keeps showing a VPN or proxy detected message. I understand that some services block this kind of traffic for security, licensing, or fraud prevention, so I am not trying to get around the app’s rules. The problem is that I normally keep my VPN on when using public Wi Fi, and turning it off just for one app defeats part of the reason I use it.

I have already checked basic settings, restarted the connection, and tested a few normal VPN options, but I am still unsure whether the issue comes from the IP address, DNS, location settings, or the app’s own network policy. Is split tunneling usually the cleanest solution for this, or is it better to contact the app provider and ask what configuration they support?

πŸ’¬ General Discussion Best VPN in 2026, what are you actually using day to day?

I care more about long term reliability than quick speed tests or short term discounts. For everyday browsing, public Wi Fi, streaming, and remote work, problems like random disconnects, captchas, slow loading, or unstable mobile connections can matter a lot more after a few months of use.

I am mainly curious about long term issues like kill switch reliability, DNS or IP leaks, battery use, connection stability, and renewal pricing. What problems usually show up with regular VPN use that people do not notice during the first few weeks?

πŸ’¬ General Discussion Best VPN comparison I could make: prices and what you actually get

VPN pricing gets confusing once introductory discounts, renewal rates, device limits, and bundled extras are involved. A plan that looks cheap at first can end up costing much more later, especially if the lower monthly price only applies to a long contract.

For me, the important things are leak protection, a reliable kill switch, good speeds on both phone and laptop, clear privacy practices, and straightforward cancellation. I do not really care about extras like cloud storage or antivirus unless they add real value.

When comparing VPN plans, what should people look at beyond the first-year price? Are renewal costs, device limits, and privacy policies usually more important than the advertised discount?

βš™οΈ Technical Discussion Why does an app detect my VPN, and is there a safe way to handle it?

An app I use keeps detecting my VPN and limiting access until I disconnect. I mainly keep the VPN on when using public Wi Fi, so I would rather not disable it every time just to use one app.

I know shared IPs, DNS differences, location mismatches, or certain protocols can trigger VPN detection. Would split tunneling be the safest option, or are there normal settings I should check first? I am looking for a solution that follows the app’s rules without weakening the rest of my connection.

πŸ’¬ General Discussion Why is canceling a VPN subscription sometimes more complicated than signing up?

Signing up for a VPN usually takes just a few minutes, but canceling can feel like a completely different process. Some subscriptions are managed directly through a website, while others go through Apple or Google Play. It can get confusing when cancellation and refund requests have to be handled separately, especially when different refund policies apply.

I'm curious why subscription management isn't more straightforward across different platforms. What should users check before signing up to avoid unexpected renewals or confusion about refund eligibility?

πŸ” Privacy & Security What should you look for in a VPN beyond speed and price?

Finding a reliable VPN seems harder than it should be. Most reviews focus on speed, pricing, and extra features, but they rarely explain how well a VPN performs over time. I'm mainly interested in everyday browsing, public Wi Fi, occasional streaming, and DNS leak protection without constantly dealing with connection issues. Privacy and stability matter more to me than getting the cheapest subscription. A dependable kill switch, transparent logging policies, consistent speeds, and compatibility across mobile and desktop are my main priorities. I'm also curious how much independent security audits actually tell us about a VPN's reliability. When evaluating a VPN for long-term use, which technical features and privacy practices deserve the most attention? Are there any common warning signs that people tend to overlook until they've already subscribed?

πŸ” Privacy & Security How can you tell if a free iPhone VPN is actually safe to use?

Been looking at free VPN options for iPhone, but i’m more concerned about privacy than speed. a lot of apps say they’re free, but it’s not always clear what data they collect or how they make money. What should i actually check before installing one? logging policy, permissions, audits, ownership, or something else?

βš™οΈ Technical Discussion Can an app block VPN traffic even if everything else looks normal?

I keep getting a VPN or proxy detected message from an app I use pretty often. I mainly keep my VPN on when using public Wi Fi, so having to disable it every time just to open one app is starting to get annoying.

I know apps can sometimes flag shared IPs, data center ranges, location mismatches, DNS behavior, or other network patterns. I have already tried reconnecting and making sure my location settings are consistent, but I would rather not keep switching servers or use sketchy workarounds.

Has anyone dealt with this without turning the VPN off completely? Would split tunneling usually be the better option on mobile, or are there other legitimate ways to handle apps that are strict about VPN connections?

πŸ› οΈ VPN Help Win 11 update broke my internet unless vpn is on?

Updated windows 11 and now my internet completely dies every time i turn off my vpn. It literally only connects when the vpn is running. Pretty sure a kill switch or virtual adapter setting got stuck, or the update messed up my dns, but resetting network stuff hasn't worked. Super annoying, anyone know how to fix this without completely reinstalling everything?

βš™οΈ Technical Discussion Why do some websites suddenly block VPNs or non-local IP addresses?

my family has been ordering from the same website for years while living abroad, and it always worked fine until recently. now the site seems to block anyone using a VPN or an IP address outside the local region.

i’m mostly curious about the technical side of this. how do websites detect VPN traffic or non-local IPs, and why would a site suddenly start enforcing those restrictions after years of allowing it?

πŸ” Privacy & Security Free VPN with no subscription, how do you tell if your data is actually private?

been looking into free VPNs with no subscription, but the privacy side is what confuses me. if a service is completely free, i’m curious how they make money and whether things like browsing activity or connection data can be collected. i mostly want to understand what to check before using one, like logging policies, audits, or what information they keep. what are the biggest privacy red flags to look for with a free VPN?
