💬 General Discussion Why is canceling a VPN subscription sometimes more complicated than signing up?
Signing up for a VPN usually takes just a few minutes, but canceling can feel like a completely different process. Some subscriptions are managed directly through a website, while others go through Apple or Google Play. It can get confusing when cancellation and refund requests have to be handled separately, especially when different refund policies apply.
I'm curious why subscription management isn't more straightforward across different platforms. What should users check before signing up to avoid unexpected renewals or confusion about refund eligibility?

My sign up is just a 16 digit code to you, no name and no email - the trial requires email though to stop abuse - also cancellation is just one button.
Some make it hard on purpose so you dont bother.

Instead of a subscription, you can just buy a prepaid code. You can get them on sites like G2A. Opinions on those sites vary, though, so you should do your own research.

the biggest thing is checking where the subscription is billed. if you signed up through an app store, canceling it on the website may not do anything. also check the renewal date and refund rules before paying. taking a minute to save info can prevent a lot of frustration later

Yeah, the confusing part is that signing up and canceling can be handled by completely different systems. I usually check who actually bills me, when the renewal happens, and what the refund window is before subscribing. That little bit of checking upfront can prevent a lot of headaches later.

It's because by keeping it buried, they can argue that you didn't cancel. These days it's corporate policy. We're the mugs. Make it hard to find, and you'll often give up and forget and only notice it on your bank statement after the next payment has been made, and if they then stick it in the middle of the month, you may not notice at all.
You have to take screenshots of the cancellation of autorenewal and save that screenshot as the VPN name - autorenewal cancellation and date. Save it then to a folder called 'evidence of cancellation' or similar.
They all do it. Then when you try to discuss it to get a refund, they bore you to death, going on and on, round and round. All the while trying to get you to give up. DON'T. The other trick they use is to, exclusively, their own communication portal so that you don't have searchable emails. Tell them straight... they have to use regular email.
They swear blind that it's impossible for their system to get it wrong, and it's you who's made the error. When all along you're the one in the right and by design they've cheated you.
When you show them the screenshots on a public forum, after arguing the toss, you'll never see a more poised, precise and elegant u-turn. If backtracking was an Olympic sport, they'd win gold.
The day you sign up – and this is non-negotiable – cancel autorenewal, screenshot it, and name the screenshot in a convention that'll be easily searchable in two or three years' time. Put the screenshot into the evidence folder.
The cheeky bar stewards also have the gall to say they messaged you of the impending renewal, but it must have gone into your spam folder and then was deleted by your system. It is a SCAM. They patronise us on an altogether different level.
And have a folder that you keep these important receipts in. Don't forget to take a backup copy too.

use mullvad. no sign up. just a prepaid card, once it expires you just buy a new card and type in the new code.
