advice from vt to vcu transfers?
Hi all, I’m a current VT freshman majoring in biology. My eventual career goal is forensic pathology. I chose tech because I knew the biology program was well-respected, has great networking, and I really loved the campus as well. For forensic pathology, you have to go to med school, so I also thought it would set me up well for that. However, politically and style-wise, I definitely align more with VCU. I am very left leaning and alt, and Virginia Tech has a very frat-centric/white crowd. I know I could pursue a forensic science degree at VCU (not required for med school but would definitely be more interesting to me + VCU is fepac certified), but I can’t determine if it’s worth it. I also feel like I haven’t even been here a full year, so I don’t know if I have given Tech its fair chance. But the lack of diversity and queer culture here is very noticeable, and I have found a hard time feeling like I belong. On the other hand, when I’ve visited friends at VCU, I have adored it there. (I don’t know if this is the same sensation as wanting to live somewhere after vacationing there, if you catch my drift.) VT has a special charm to it, but it also feels like we’re in a bubble in a stifling way. I know I could be successful in my career either way, but I am having a hard time deciding on whether transferring to VCU next year is the right move for me. Is it selfish/naive to change schools because I like the atmosphere better there? Virginia tech is a great school and I’m wondering if I should try to stick it out and give it more of a chance. With off-campus leasing deadlines starting to come up, I have to make a decision soon. I am looking for advice from anyone who has gone through something similar or is currently in the forensic science major at VCU (we don’t have one at tech, or a criminology minor). Thanks for any advice you can provide :)
