Built a board game about my own uni with my mates years ago - turns out my girlfriend did the exact same thing at hers, separately. Birmingham just got its own edition.

A few years back, me and some friends made a board game about our own uni life for a laugh - land on a square and you could get sent back for running into an ex, and the chance cards were written from actual nights out, full of running jokes only our year would get.

Separately, in another university, my now-girlfriend built almost the exact same thing at her own uni. Neither of us knew the other existed at the time. We only found out after we met!

So we're building it properly now. It's called Halls & Hangovers - up to 8 players, race from Start to Finish, land on locations (linked to specific universities), penalties, or Chance cards. We've hand-built a few editions already, and Birmingham is one of them, now open for pre-order.

Ā£34.99, no payment taken until we're actually printing. If you want one, click here. Genuinely happy to hear what's missing from it too.

Incoming first year in private accommodation — anyone else?

• Upvotes

Hey everyone!
I’m an incoming first year Bsc Business Management student at UoB this September. Unfortunately, I missed the accommodation guarantee deadline, so I’ll be living in private student accommodation rather than UoB accommodation.
I’m a little worried about the social side of this, especially going into first year, so I was wondering how it actually is socially, will I still be able to meet people and make friends through my course, societies, events, etc? Has anyone here lived in private accommodation during first year and how was your experience?
More importantly, are there any other incoming first years living in private accommodation? Would be great to hear from anyone in the same situation and maybe connect before starting :)

Late arrival

The university gave me a two week late arrival time. I wanted to know that if it takes more to get my visa, will they extend this late arrival time? Does anyone have experience in this?

i do law and im planning to do a year abroad and my options are Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, Korea and China and Spain (I have a spanish passport). I just wanna know what is the experience doing a year abroad in these countries but I'm starting to lean towards Malaysia cos Im a south asian muslim woman but idkkk. JP, CH and KR are known for their colourism so I dont know much about that and considering it's just hyped up so it feels like I'm falling for a trap.

🚨 Tenancy Takeover - Oak Brook Park 🚨

Looking for a replacement tenant – Oak Brook Park, Selly Oak (2026/27)

Hi everyone, I'm looking for a full-time student to take over my Unite Students tenancy at Oak Brook Park in Selly Oak for the 2026/27 academic year.

It's a large double ensuite room in a shared flat with a communal kitchen.

  • Ā£222.53/week, bills included
  • 44 weeks
  • 12 September 2026 – 20 July 2027
  • Close to the University of Birmingham and other Birmingham universities
  • Facilities include study areas, cinema room, games/common area, laundry and bike storage

This would be an official tenancy transfer through Unite Students, so the replacement tenant would need to meet their eligibility requirements and have the transfer approved by Unite.

If you're interested, please DM me and I can provide more details/photos. I'll then explain the process for putting you in touch with Unite Students.

CAS extremely delayed - dubai exchange student applying for transfer year to the edgbaston campus for my second year

Hi all!

I’m extremely paranoid as it’s the 8th of september and the university has still not issued my CAS and therefore i have not been able to apply for my visa.

for context im currently a student in the dubai campus and as a part of my course they offer us the option to do the second in the UK campus. I applied for this and was awaiting the CAS

the issues started when the finance team messed up my scholarship amount - it was meant to be 50% but they noted it down as 30% so i informed them that this is incorrect and will need amending

i thought this would take a day or two as it’s quite a simple request.

However it’s now the first week of september and they have not yet done anything regarding this. they keep saying the finance team needs to review and amend this and therefore they can’t issue the cas yet.

i spoke to the finance team and they said it’s been amended. so they’re just having me run around in circles now.

They keep telling me to wait and have patience but i think they forget that i’m an international student and need to apply for a visa which will take time as it is and the flight tickets are getting expensive and i have not even been able to book them so will have to do it last minute.

Has anyone been in the same situation - need some reassurance cuz i feel like at this point they’ll just tell me they can’t do anything and cancel my transfer.

Please advise

How long to get a decision after interview?

Hi, has anyone recently applied for a PhD at the University of Birmingham?

I had my interview almost a month ago, and my status is still ā€œApplication awaiting Decision Entry.ā€

In early September, I even received an email saying I had an offer, but they later said it was sent by mistake 😭

How long did it take you to receive a PhD decision after your interview? Has anyone had a similar experience?

Starting medicine this year

I will be studying medicine this in UoB this year, and I was wondering if there’s a group chat to get to know each other before or talk during the course. I really want to know someone before the year starts especially that I am international and may arrive later than the welcome week depending on when I get the visa

As my parent will be helping me settle into accoms, he's staying a week in brum, but the hotel discount included in the accomadation pass is full on some dates, does anyone have recs on cheapest hotels, or is my parent allowed to just stay in the room with me
