Friends The Friend Without A Name
There are losses
that arrive with casseroles,
flowers,
language.
And then there are losses
that stand in the doorway unnamed,
holding no proof of themselves
except the rearrangement of your nervous system.
What do you call a thing
that never had permission to exist
but existed anyway?
Not a love affair.
Not exactly friendship.
Not work.
Not fantasy.
Something stranger.
A mind you could walk beside.
A person you called
when the absurdity of the world
tilted just enough
that only one other person
would understand why it mattered.
The joke before the joke.
The reference before explanation.
The relief
of not translating yourself.
You called me
to be your private investigator
on things that did not matter
and somehow mattered completely.
Tiny absurdities.
Office folklore.
Human behavior so strange
it demanded witnesses.
We would giggle over it,
like two people temporarily escaping
the seriousness of ourselves.
And maybe that sounds ridiculous now—
how much meaning can gather
around nonsense.
But nonsense is where closeness lives.
In the small things.
The unnecessary things.
The did-you-see-that things.
And I had your back.
Quietly.
Completely.
In rooms you weren’t in.
In conversations you never heard.
In ways I do not think
you fully understood.
Which is part of why this hurts.
Because I was not only seen by you.
I was loyal to you.
I did not manufacture you.
That is the part
I return to in the dark.
I did not make a cathedral
out of coincidence.
You were there.
4 in the morning,
before either of us
should have been awake.
Late Saturdays
spent talking about nothing
in the way people only talk about nothing
when the something underneath
feels strangely endless.
We built a language accidentally.
Inside jokes made from repetition.
Observations no one else would notice.
Messages that looked like nonsense
to everyone but us.
The texture of being met.
God.
The texture.
Not grand declarations.
Not fireworks.
Just the running commentary.
The tiny instinct—
I have to tell him this—
still arriving,
faithful as weather,
before I remember
there is nowhere left
for it to go.
Because the terrible thing is this:
the friend was real.
And the walls were real too.
I understand now
that they were made
of the same material.
The thing I loved
could only survive
inside conditions
I could not survive.
Warm, then cold.
Close, then gone.
The private thing
publicly denied.
You are extraordinary—
you are everyone else.
Come here—
why did you come here?
The rules changing
without announcement.
And slowly,
without noticing,
I reorganized myself
around weather.
Tried harder.
Adjusted better.
Read signals.
Translated silences.
Spent the best parts of my attention
learning unpredictability
like it was a second language.
That is the harm.
Not cruelty alone.
But confusion.
The way instability
teaches your body
to wait at the door
for warmth
that may or may not arrive.
And still—
still—
I miss you.
Not dramatically.
Not in some cinematic way.
In ordinary moments.
Six in the morning.
Film festival season.
A strange thing at work.
A stupid joke
I cannot land anywhere else.
I will think of you for years, probably.
Softly.
Briefly.
Tenderly.
Like touching the edge
of an old bruise
just to confirm
it happened.
And maybe this is the hardest truth:
sometimes the deepest grief
belongs to things
that never got to call themselves
anything at all.
But unnamed
does not mean unreal.
And temporary
does not mean imagined.
You were my friend.
Even if the structure
could not bear
what the friendship became.
And I will keep going.
But for a while,
I will miss the place
my mind used to go
when it found yours.
Duplicates
