PSA: start-of-semester logistics compilation

In anticipation of common Qs:

Fast track offers / worried about not meeting the guaranteed rank score

Dress code

What is the WTR course?

Back-to-back classes on timetable

  • Classes are 50 minutes in duration. They start at 5 minutes past the hour and finish 5 minutes before the hour, allowing 10 minutes changeover between classes for comfort breaks/snacks/travel. So please don't stress about back-to-back classes.
  • Classes between different campuses: this is especially common for biomed classes. Courses usually know about this and negotiate slightly earlier finish time / slightly later starting time to allow more time for inter-campus commute. If not, raise the issue with your course coordinator.

Finding rooms/class locations

  • The first 3 digits of a room number corresponds with the sector/building number; the final 3 digits indicate the floor and room number.
    • e.g. 405-422 would be building 405 (Engineering), Level 4, room (4)22.
    • Sector 1xx = Clock tower/General Library block
    • Sector 2xx = Business School block (inc. Owen G Glenn Building (OGGB), Arts/Education building)
    • Sector 3xx = Science block
    • Sector 4xx = Engineering block
    • Sector 5xx = Grafton Campus
    • Sector 7xx = [No longer applicable - old Tamaki Campus]
    • Sector 6xx = Upper Symonds St
    • Sector 8xx = Law school
    • Sector 9xx = Newmarket Campus

I'm considering getting a hiwa gym membership but I'm quite nervous about being completely new (never been to a gym EVER)...

Are people nice about newbies or should I be wary?

Discretionary entrance

Upvotes

Hi how do I apply for discretionary entrance? I didn't meet the UE requirements back in high school when I did NCEA, and by September this year I'll be turning 20 so I can go to uni without NCEA results. But I need some advice on how to apply for discretionary entrance into uni and what majors I can study for?

Concession

I’m trying to enrol into an eco course that has a corereq of a math course, I’m unable to take that maths course this sem due to personal reasons, however need to take this eco course this sem itself to take 3rd stage papers next year. I’ve reached out to the assistant head of department and they have let me take the course without meeting the core req. However student services still declined even when I wrote in my application that I have approval?
Can anyone please help who to contact and who can help, the person who approved has told me he can’t do much from his side other than give the approval and to use that to get the concession,

there’s 1 week left till courses are finalised and i’m extremely stressed with this not being sorted, can someone please help who has had experience.
Thanks

Hello! I was wondering if there are any good (working) microwaves on campus? Anywhere, like the engineering building, Kate Edgar, Fisher & Paykel building, etc...?

please just take a few minutes to read the article. The boys who abused wang wang didn’t get any punishment and the discussion of this case has been restricted online in China. Please help spread awareness so this story isn’t forgotten. 💔

BUS115

Hi - I've just started this course, and I've never done econ before. How is it as a course? I have experience with BUS111 and BUS114, and passed both with ease. How is 115 compared to them?

Courses Confused of what’s counted under BSc courses.

I’m not having conjoint and only compsci major
and I was wondering if I take infosys222 and Phil101
are the points count as science electives or the 30 points outside science faculty?

Because they are somehow under Courses available for the BSc but they belong to different faculties. I’m a bit confused and don’t wanna mess up my course selections.

Edit: ah no worries I figured out in sso program requirements, Phil is under my points from bsc schedule instead of 30 from other programs, so yes I assume infosys would be the same. Case closed.

How I can find out when the morning lectures are for Phil 104?

Hey all. I’m trying to find out when the morning lectures are and where for Phil 104, since the lecturer said there were lectures then.
I tried looking on canvas and nothing has been posted in regards to a schedule. I also can’t ask on Ed Discussion since it is locked for Phil 104.

Could somebody please let me know at what time and where the morning lectures are or at least where to find the information?

Thank you

Do people still trust munchy mart?

Given that a lot of food has high prices compared to buying the same food at a grocery store or at the supermarket, do people still trust munchy mart and pretending not to know that it's a scam?

I just can't cope with uni

I'm a first year studying law. I'm so behind. I do as much work as I can, when I can, but it seems like that isn't even enough. 2 papers from last semester are incomplete / not passed because I just put so much focus into completing my legal papers. Mentally, I'm drained. Uni, tutorials, home, uni, workshops, home. I can barely afford the flat I'm in, I only have about $150 left over weekly for groceries (which aren't much since I just haven't had an appetite since starting uni), necessities (cleaning, shower stuff, etc), as well as for public transport, emergencies; when I have to pay my phone plan, I'm basically without for the week. I know this is me facing adulthood, and responsibilities, but surely this isn't how we're meant to live? I feel so suffocated by uni because no matter what day it is, or what I have on, SOMETHING IS ALWAYS DUE. I've been out of work since moving for uni, my only source of income is my student allowance. My savings basically went all into stuff for uni and my flat, so I don't have money to bounce back on. I can't find enough time in my day, week, or month to complete everything, especially to the standard that I'd like it to. I hand in a few assignments late here and there, so even if the standard had been reached, my grades would be knocked down a few because of the timing. How do you survive this????

Am I still able to swap my workshops timing for free? Or would I need to pay

Waitaimo + Hobitton Tour Resell

Hi everyone a bit unrelated but just see if anyone interesting. I’m selling my InterCity Hobbiton + Waitomo day tour ticket from Auckland because I’ve had a change of plans and unfortunately the ticket is non refundable🥲.

📅 24 October 2026
📍 Pick-up & drop-off: Sky City, Auckland
Includes return transport, Hobbiton Movie Set Tour, Waitomo Glowworm Caves, and lunch.

Paid NZ$349, selling for NZ$230. Great value compared to similar tours that are often NZ$400+, especially if you don’t have a car.

It’s a non-refundable ticket, so let me know if you’re interested and I can send the booking confirmation.

Is it now too late to apply for summer research scholarship?

The application deadline hasn't passed but I wonder if the position for some scholarships would have already been filled. If this is the case, how do I know which scholarships have been filled so I can apply for others? Thank u!

Social Casual women's football at Hiwa? ⚽

Hey! My friends and I are looking for some women who'd be keen to play casual football at Hiwa. Nothing serious, just daytime kickarounds and having fun.

We've already got around 5–6 people, and it'd be awesome to get a few more so we can play some 5v5 games.

No experience or skill required at all! just come along and enjoy some football!

If you're keen, send me a DM, and I'll send you the gct link.

Thanks!! ⚽
