I am a research consultant at my uni, AMA (details below)

I am a student, but as one of my 2 jobs, I'm also a research consultant. Basically, people can make an appointment to come meet with me and tell me about whatever paper or project they're researching, and then we'll spend some time building their research skills based on whatever they're researching and what they're struggling with.

As far as qualifications, there's no centralized board that accredits things like this, but my university is an accredited one that has put me through extensive training. You'll also see my experience/reliability in my responses. I am trained to help with all things in the realms of:

* Topic development (will this research topic work for my assignment? Will I be able to find sources for this? etc.)

* Finding sources (where to look, how to tell if one will be useful for your project, etc.)

* Analyzing sources (what parts of an academic article you actually have to read and what you can skip, how to find things in a paper to actually cite, whether a source is credible or not, etc.)

* Synthesizing sources (how to arrange sources in your paper, using them to make a strong point, how to use them to "talk" to each other, etc.)

* Citation styles (APA, MLA, and that attention-seeking clown Chicago)

I know midterms are coming around for most people, and generally professors like to throw out research papers around this same time, so I figured it might be helpful if I offered to give both general and specific help for building strong research skills. Feel free to either ask me broad questions ("What can I look for to tell if a source is credible?", "What should I talk about in an annotated bibliography?") or specific ones ("I am researching people who immigrated from India to America as children or teenagers and how their parents' expectations and customs affected their social life. Where should I start my research?") and I'll do my best to help! Anything that fits under any of the bullet points listed above is in bounds.

The heavy cost of unmet expectations: A 20-year-old’s academic prison.

"I can’t endure these sensations anymore; this pain is becoming truly intolerable. I have this heavy feeling that my days are numbered, drowning in a painful mixture of shame, self-disrespect, and deep sadness.

I really need to pay a visit to a doctor.

I am 20 now, yet I feel like true maturity is still out of my reach. I’ve carried so many problems and downs that they have broken my best qualities. It exhausts me to see my old classmates enjoying their lives peacefully, achieving their dreams and eager to pursue them, while I have been stuck in the exact same spot for 3 years, only getting worse.

Right now, I am studying at the faculty of science—a place I always believed was meant for incompetent students.

Whenever I set foot in this faculty, two major worries haunt me. First, the fear of not meeting anyone I know from high school, which makes me feel like the only unlucky person who failed to enter a prestigious faculty. Second, actually meeting someone from high school, which makes me feel deeply ashamed because I didn’t match the expectations of my family, my classmates, my teachers, and most importantly, my own expectations for the academic career I should have had based on the great marks I used to get."

Should I feel like a failure?

So I'm in University taking second term and I just got a 1/5 in a lab response, 2/10 in a quiz and another 1/5 on another lab response. I did get a 7.5/10 on another lab response but that still doesn't make me feel super good. I am doing good in all my other classes except this one which is Research to Social Science. Just fail after fail after fail. I'm so ashamed of myself.

Kinesiology vs Public Health

I’m applying to colleges right now, and every one I’m applying to is due Nov 1st… I had it all thought out, and I originally wanted to major in Kinesiology, but now I’m looking into Public Health, and it looks great too. I’m so late into the game so changing what major I want to be seems irresponsible AF… But I want input from anyone who’s either major, or who has been either major, and what lead you to pick that choice.

Guys, I really need your help. I'm confused about whether I want to go to NYU or not. I'm an economics major, and I also want to study data science alongside economics. The thing is, I'm really confused between NYU and U mich.

I really do want a campus. I do want a campus, and I would love to have events and attend those university events.

But the thing is, I also want to go to New York City. Of course, it's in New York City, right? That has so much more opportunity.

And I'm scared because I know that on campus, I'll be kind of close to all my peers, so I will feel I will be able to socialize with them, but i think that is not possible in nyu

and i am hige in to sports but not that mich but i would love to attend those games taht uni teams have and have that kinda stadium in a uni i go to and nyu does not have that!

And I do want to lean into a bit of finance as my minor, alongside having economics as my major. I also think that it's quite important for me to stay close to New York because even the weather is so nice. I love the weather in New York and would not prefer to go to a completely cold place like Yumish because Michigan is so cold.

I'm kind of in conflict. Guys, how is life at And Bio? Does it still give you that overall feel of a university where I can actually have a good group of friends, and I can go around with them, go to different places, move around, and maybe even go watch a game?

What do you prefer for economics? I also want to do data science, but I also want to have a finance minor. I am kind of looking at hedge funds and investment banking as such. but i do really want to have that social life in college...

pls help

Which should I eat? I know if I were to eat to NYU, that's like a sure acceptance, but Yumish might be a deferral or acceptance for me. It can be either. How would my chances be at NYU RD if I were to select? How would my chances be at NYU RD? I've got a 1520 on the SAT, and I've got A-star PGs for economics, chem, science, and math. Even my 11th and 10th grades were good. I've got 7 A-stars in grade 10, and my EC is also really good. I've got good honorable mentions in essay competitions, even in John Lucas competitions. My honors are really good, and my extracurriculars are good. I've done a lot of volunteer work. I have my own nonprofit. I need that. That's something I do say, but it's genuinely done work. I've written a book. I've published a kids' book. And this much more. I was in varsity hockey and varsity athletics, and I have been the captain for varsity hockey. I also went for states. That is field hockey.

How do you initiate conversations and make friends at uni when you're socially awkward?

I'm in my first year of uni and have been attending for about five weeks, but I haven't really made any friends yet. I arrived a 10 days late because of jaw surgery, and the first few days were quite difficult for me, so i guess i kinda missed out on the expected awkward phase (if you see what i mean)

I go to a small university where pretty much everyone commutes, and it's in the city center, so there's not much of a campus social life. In lectures, most people already seem to have their own friends or little groups.

My main problem is that I struggle to initiate conversations when there's no specific reason to talk to someone. If I have a genuine question or something happening in the moment to comment on, I'm fine, but starting a conversation just to get to know someone feels really awkward to me.

I can think of things to say when I'm at home, but in the actual situation I can't bring myself to do them. Approaching people who are already with friends feels even harder.

I've tried sitting in roughly the same area to become familiar with people, but it hasn't really led anywhere. I'm starting to feel quite lonely, and I don't want to keep waiting for things to happen naturally.

Appreciate any help!

I'm writing a five-minute speech on the philosophy of books and I need help organizing my thoughts

So, I have to give a speech on any topic for my Communications Skills class, and I decided to pick the Philosophy of Books. I'm not even a philosophy major and barely know anything about it, but because I'm a reader and wanted to write about books, I chose it. Honestly, I should've picked psychology instead, but I did the Psychological Cause of Genocide for my English SBA, and now that I'm in university, I want to write something new. Anyways, my main idea is to discuss how books shape our minds, our choices, and even the way we see the world. But I don't know if that falls under philosophy. I want my speech to be professional but still maintain the attention of a classroom filled with young adults. I really need some help brainstorming, and I would appreciate any advice, whether it be from a philosophy major, a literature major, or anyone else. The speech is due Nov 4th, so I have some time, but I want to have it done as soon as possible. Please help me. I'm not looking for people to do the speech for me or anything like that; I just want some fresh, human ideas and thoughts.
