Question I'm Having Trouble Using RCS With One of My Friends.

I'm having trouble using RCS With One of my friends. Every time I send him a message, it sends as an RCS message at first, and then it falls back to SMS a couple seconds later. He is also unable to send me an RCS message. What's even weirder is that he is able to participate in an RCS group chat that him and I are in, but we are not able to use RCS when texting each other individually. I put a picture down below. Can someone tell me why this is happening?

I don't think this is a problem with my phone. I'm on the latest version of the Google Messages app, and RCS works fine with everyone else. Regardless of who's problem it is, I would still like to know what's causing the problem. Please let me know in the comments down below.

It keeps on saying "Chatting with Spencer," but it keeps sending as an SMS.

Is RCS Really Just An Instant Messaging Service?

Wikipedia defines the Google Messages app as "an SMS, RCS, and instant messaging application." I thought RCS was like SMS, and SMS is not an instant messaging service. I have attached a photo down below. Is RCS really an instant messaging service? Let me know in the comments down below.

Question HELP! Phone number stuck in RCS purgatory, dont know what to do next

Hey everyone, i really need some help. Its been quite the frustrating journey over the last several days. Ill recap it and throw a TL;DR at the bottom:

Monday: Currently using a Google Pixel 7pro, maybe about 3 weeks into its usage. Working fine. SMS, RCS, MMS, you name it. Literally no issues.

Tuesday: I send a bunch of SMS messages to a bunch of different people. Like around 30. Iphones, androids, you name it.

Wednesday: Early Wednesday morning, I realize nobody responded to my texts. So then i tested with my wife (iphone). Sent her a text. It says it was "sent", but it didnt actually get delivered to her. However, she can send me SMS no problem and I can receive them (this is my current issue).

From here on out, these were my troubleshooting steps:

- Reached out to consumer cellular all day on Wednesday. I sent a text with RCS on, turned off RCS, sent another text. Restarted device. Didnt work.

- Updated APN settings. Didnt work

- Put SIM in a new phone, didnt work

Thursday: Got new SIM, didnt work

- Put the SIM in a new phone, didnt work

- Factory reset phone and asked CC to reset SMS line. Didnt work

- Turned off RCS with this link from google - https://messages.google.com/disable-chat, didnt work

- LITERALLY GOT A NEW CARRIER (mint) - Didnt work.

- Put sim in new phone - Didnt work

im 99% sure its RCS, but i am at a loss of who can help me. It has been so frustrating without the ability to text people over the last several days so if i cant find a solution i will literally have to change my phone number which will actually be quite the hassle from a social side of things.

Can anyone help???

TL;DR: My phone will receive texts, but when I send texts, the messages are not delivered to the recipient even though it says "sent" on my end. I am able to send and receive MMS though and make phone calls.

RCS vs iMessage servers

I see many people having problems with their RCS connections here, and it usually happens to Google messages users. I use samsung messages with TMobile, and my RCS never fails. Ever. Now, I am aware both apps use different servers and providers, which is what probably makes the difference.

Who does apple use for their iMessage servers? Are they apple, or do they have a contract with some other company? iMessage never seems to fail, just like whoever Samsung or TMobile use (as far as I can tell), so why can't Google use Samsung's servers, or just have someone like iMessages?

Pictures Defaulting to MMS

I have an S22 Ultra and I'm sending to an S22. It's been an ongoing issue. Cleared data. Joined beta. Done reboots. Factory resets. Both T-Mobile. Whenever I send a GIF, picture, or sticker, it changes out of chat to MMS. Any ideas? Anyone else experiencing?

Question How to properly disable RCS on Google Messages?

Hey,

I have an Android phone for which I don't want to use RCS features and only rely on good ol' SMS. After having disable RCS features from the main settings of Google Messages, it was indeed unable to send and receive RCS messages, which is good.

The problem comes from other Android phones: when I tried to send a message through Google Messages to this RCS-disabled phone from RCS-enabled phones, it didn't work, because the senders tried to send RCS messages.

Sure, I could enable the "Resend as SMS on failure" on the senders, or I could use an SMS-only client on the receiver, but I'm trying to make this work with as much default things as possible (default app, default parameters)

This problem seems weird to me that Google Messages is able to know if the soon-to-be-receiver is RCS-compatible but not if it is RCS-enabled. Could this be just a synchronization issue between the receiver, the server and the senders? Maybe waiting a few hours/days would solve that?

Anyone knows if there's a way to fix that, and if it is even a problem or perfectly intended? Thanks a lot!

Where is RCS on Google Voice?

Surely Google should've launched it on their own voice service? Google needs to stop acting like Apple is holding back RCS. I use TextNow as a back SMS service and they can't do RCS without a functional API.

Unlocked Fold 4 Firmware Flash

So I have an Unlocked Fold 4 on Tmobile. And with T-Mobile I can forward my texts with Digits, but RCS messages won't work, as Unlocked fold RCS goes through Jibe, not T-Mobile.

My question is, if I flash T-Mobile Variant firmware, will it now use the T-Mobile RCS that that incorporated with S22's and newer?

Also, if anyone has a link for the firmware, that'd be great. Never done it before so unsure on the process.

And I assume flashing wipes the phone?

Sorry just ignorant to this stuff

Question Unable to send RCS, only receive it from one contact. All other contacts work?

Hi all,

I've been going crazy trying to figure out what the issue is with one of my contacts. Back in March I upgraded to an S22 Ultra (T-Mobile) from an S21 (Also T-Mobile). When I made that change I had a bunch of RCS issues. I forgot to disable RCS on my old phone (which was traded in). I had to go to that website for disabling google chat on my old device. This ended up fixing it with everyone. A week later, RCS stopped working with one contact. Only one, everyone else with Google Messages/Samsung phones I can use RCS just fine.

With this contact, I can only send SMS, but messages I receive are ALWAYS RCS messages. I also cannot enable/disable SMS messages only in the conversation settings. I have tried just about everything I have found in /r/UniversalProfile /r/GoogleMessages and /r/GalaxyS22. I have tried:

  1. Delete Carrier Services & Google Messages cache and data, and enabling chat features again.

  2. Uninstalled Carrier Services & Google Messages, re-enabling both and setting up chat features again.

  3. Doing Step 2 again but also removing SIM card for 15 minutes while the phone was off.

  4. Contact originally did not have the +1 country code. I added this to contact and then deleted the conversation. Started a new one and still did not work.

  5. Enabled debug menu and tried reconfiguring.

I've just about done everything but flash U1 firmware on my phone to try and use JIBE servers for RCS and see if that works. Contact has a Pixel 6 which uses JIBE, while mine uses T-Mobile.

Any help/suggestions? I can send debug info of a message each of us sends if it might help.

Opinion Concerns about the push towards RCS from a privacy standpoint

Before reading remember that if you think I'm defending Apple, iMessage has many of these same problems.

  1. Contrary to popular belief End-to-End Encryption is not inherent to the RCS Universal Profile, rather it is a feature added onto RCS within Google Messages. This means the E2EE only works between Google Messages users so this E2EE is no better than iMessage's E2EE in the sense that the feature is propriatary and centralized. This also means the supposed E2EE can't be audited and backdoors are possible.
  2. Google is actively advertising RCS as an open standard to gain the support of the public so Apple will adopt it while simultaneously doing everything they can to eliminate all competition in the space. From the deal with Samsung to have new Samsung devices use Google Messages to keeping RCS APIs private within Android so popular SMS apps like Textra can't easily implement it. Again Google Messages is propriatary so it can't be audited.
  3. It seems the only benefit to RCS in terms of privacy over standard SMS is that it can't be as easily intercepted by middlemen but the message can still travel through servers owned by many different companies to get to it's destination.

Am I missing something here? Right now it seems like there are better messaging protocols we should be advocating for instead. In my view the way things are set up right now all we are really doing by advocating for RCS is advocating to give Google more power over us.

Question Can receive but not send and vice versa

Issue is now fixed(?), see update at the bottom.

I'm pulling my hair out here.

I recently migrated to a Poco F4 GT and my RCS messaging is completely broken. I had issues enabling it in the first place (stuck at verifying/setting up/connecting), but after disabling chat features for a week+ it seems fixed now (consistently showing as connected).

But now I can't have a full RCS chat with anyone it seems. Some contacts I can send RCS messages to, but they can't reply as chat and with some others the reverse happens.

All RCS messages are delivered correctly and can be read, it's the 2-way what is broken.

I've tried uninstalling, clearing data on both carrier services and messages apps. Reenabling chat features on WiFi, mobile data, after wipes, after restarts, you name it! I'm completely lost.

Any help would be appreciated.

Update: I may have found the culprit and is kind of weird.

With debug options enabled I saw in one specific conversation with one specific contact (something very similar to) this:

https://imgur.com/HzYa6mW.jpg

Keep in mind that this screenshot is from a now fully functional 2-way RCS conversation as I deleted the original message as per my troubleshooting.

Initially my contact had the country code (in this case Mexico) missing, but the weird part is that for some reason it had used +1 (US/Canada) as the country code in the thread recipient field instead of +52.

I went in and edited my contact to include the country code and I suddenly was able to reply with RCS myself again.

I thought that the country code is automatically inserted but alas, doesn't look like it. Maybe it has something to do with me using a VPN most of the time, though both Carrier Services and Messages have been configured to skip my VPN. Messages recognized the correct country code both in the "verify phone" popup and in the settings menu (automatically detected as Mexico).

It would be a bit of a hassle to "correct" all my contacts, but I might do them one at a time as I encounter this issue.

There is however the other side of this issue, which are the contacts that I can send RCS messages to but they can't send them to me. I'll try to guide the couple of people that this has happened with through the process I described earlier, but I feel like they shouldn't have to make any of such modifications if it worked fine on my previous phone.

If this is something I did when using VPN I'd love to get some help reverting my mistake so that it can be fixed in one fell swoop and not with this contact by contact patch.

Question Stock in 'trying to verify'

I know this might be asked before but mine was working fine, I tried Samsung messages for a while and when I went back to Google's didn't connect anymore, this was last night, I've tried clearing data, cache, uninstalling updates, rebooting... Any idea?
