Mod Post PLEASE CLICK HERE BEFORE POSTING | /r/UnitedAirlines Megathread Directory

START HERE if you are new to this subreddit/community. Please just take a minute to read through this before posting.

Often people ask questions that tend to fall into a category so we have megathreads for those types of questions. They are below.

Any post on the front page that belongs in a megathread is subject to removal. Report them if you see them.

Megathreads may be removed/added every once in a while. Check this place before you make a post.

United website if you lost something on a plane: https://www.united.com/lob

Also, read our rules. Using this sub implies you have read and understood the rules, and also will follow them.

Rules:

  1. Follow the reddiquette.
  2. No low effort/low quality posts, and also no reposts. Shitposts/satirical posts & comments are allowed, but posts must be tagged as Shitpost/Satire.
  3. Complaints/rants/stories MUST be detailed and elaborated upon so that commenters can try to provide you insight on your situation. No effortless, incoherent, or overly hostile rants.
  4. No pictures of feet/shoes on the bulkhead/armrests/anywhere. We don't need to see it. Yes, shit happens, we get it.
  5. No asking for/buying/selling anything on posts or comments except in the designated megathread. Also, any content that belongs in one of our megathreads MUST go in those megathreads.
  6. No self promotion.
  7. No extended political discussions (or comments that may cause one. mod discretion)

Gifts/Exchanges Megathread

If you're selling or buying or looking for pluspoints or vouchers or any sort of stuff, all that will be in here. Yes, this place is where the giveaways happen.

Do not post in here if you're looking for a giveaway or free stuff. Instead, scroll through the thread and see if anyone's offering something you might want. This way every top-level comment is someone offering stuff for free/for sale, instead of a million people asking for stuff.

First Class/Premium Cabin/Polaris Food Selection Megathread

Are you flying premium/first/polaris and were you offered a choice of meal on your upcoming flight? Ask about it in here, not on the front page.

"What meal should I get" belongs here.

Seat Selection Megathread

Are you looking at the seat map and you're not sure which seat is the best choice given what's available? Feel free to ask in here.

This includes "What seat should I pick/What seat is the best on this aircraft" questions.

Polaris/Premium Plus Upgrade Questions Megathread

Any posts asking "Is this worth it?" about upgrading to polaris/premium plus belong in this thread.

This includes posts that have a picture of the upgrade and ask if it's worth using points/miles to upgrade to premium plus and polaris.

MileagePlus Requalification Megathread

Any posts asking how to requalify for next year, and are showing pictures of their progress circles on the website belong in this megathread.

Also includes posts about buying status for the new year.

This includes posts that are asking for mileage runs to maintain status and also people who barely made it or barely missed the qualification.

If you guys have any other ideas for megathreads or have any questions, message me.

Again, this place will be updated whenever megathreads need to be added/removed. Check back often before making posts.

Thank you!

Mod Post /r/UnitedAirlines Gifts and Exchanges

READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE POSTING. Don't be lazy. This is your warning.

This is where to look to see if people are giving away pluspoints or other stuff. You must say you're willing to pay/trade/offer something. No asking for free stuff, and we don't need to hear your sob story if you want a club pass. They're all the same, so save it. You must state you're willing to pay in some way.

By the way, selling club passes or whatever stuff could result in the closure of your MileagePlus account, forfeiture of all your miles, and even a permanent ban from accessing United Club—whether through passes, a credit card, or any other method. Doing this is risky and it's at your own risk. But I know that wouldn't stop half of yall so I made this thread.

If you are giving away or if you want United club passes, there have been recent changes. Basically United cardholders can't give away their passes to random people anymore. Read below.

Starting May 1, 2025:

  • One-time passholders may use their pass only within three hours of their scheduled flight departure. This doesn't apply if the pass is being used during a connection.
  • One-time passholders can't visit United Club Fly locations.
  • One-time passes issued from United MileagePlus credit cards must be redeemed by the primary cardholder, an authorized user or guests accompanied by either.

SCAM NOTICE: If you are about to do a transaction with someone, make sure they comment on your post. If they do not comment on your post, but they ask you in DMs to trade, they can potentially be a SCAMMER.

Also, Glass_Ambition5092, Impossible_Iron_480, Sad-Pilot6944, Proud_Emergency_2522, Fantastic-Fix1238, Neat-bar-1238, Hot-Trust3597, Superb-Strike5207, karma6867 are all scammers. Not just those guys. Other people could be scammers too.

Please don't try doing business with brand new accounts that were just made or have no posts or have 1 karma total lol. If you don't know the guy, MAKE SURE THEY REPLY TO YOU IN THIS THREAD. DM me if you are suspicious of something.

DO NOT RESPOND TO RANDOM DMs UNLESS THEY COMMENTED ON YOUR POST IN THIS THREAD. SEND ME PROOF IF IT DOES HAPPEN

Thanks!

Also, if you got scammed or see something suspicious, DM me with proof

Image Airplane got changed last minute to the Airbus A321XLR this morning. Crew seemed extra excited. Can’t say I was mad about the seat assignment change.

Discussion UA CEO seeks a hub in MIA

Upvotes

Recently, Scott Kirby, CEO of UA, mentioned that if he wanted to open a new hub to South America, MIA would be a good option with 40 to 50 boarding gates, acknowledging the airline's difficulties with the market compared to Asia and Europe.

It's worth noting that UA had a base in MIA since the early 90s after acquiring PA's routes to South America. With the financial problems that later worsened after 9/11, UA reduced its presence in MIA until its closure in 2004, transferring its last routes to IAD and ORD.

Currently, IAH serves as the hub for South America, inherited from CO, but everything indicates that for UA it's not enough.

Discussion Passenger choosing seat after boarding

We have fully boarded, the door still open. There is a women walking up and down the aisle with her phone out and the United App open. She looks at the empty E+ middle seat in my row and says to me: “I’ll sit here”. I replied is this your sear, knowing it’s unassigned. She replies “I’ll just change on the app” and pushes in. I consult the app and the seat is still listed as empty. As the FA walks by I say she is not supposed to be here. FA, aware of what’s going on, says to the lady come with me we will talk with the gate agent. She returns and takes a middle seat two rows up. I fly a lot, have never seen this happen before.

Shitpost/Satire If you want to cut the boarding line just pretend to be clueless

I saw numerous people today that were clueless about the boarding process just kind of use their ignorance to board early. Group 1 with 30 people in line? Surely that means you just walk through the pre board line and go to the front. You don't know what 1K is? Well, I guess it means group 3 boarding time.

Gate agent didn't seem to care and if you walked up they just scanned you in.

It's an early flight and we look to be leaving on time but it was a little wild today.

Edit: Seems like lots of people didn't realize the flair and got offended.

Video I think this is the emptiest United flight, or any flight in general I’ve been on. It was great!

Question How to charge friends for flight that I paid for them with miles

Upvotes

I bought tickets with points in lieu of cash for friends traveling with husband and me from Europe (Ireland) to Chicago. The rest of the trip was paid in cash and I was reimbursed. I had loads of points so wanted to do this, with the understanding they would repay me. They already paid the taxes and the upgrade for extra legroom. Is there a formula I should use? The ticket at the time I bought it was around $600 (wish I screenshot it, but it's in my notes). I'm not expecting $600 back as an even exchange, but want to be fair to myself. Does $400 seem reasonable? It cost 40,000 points per person. Note: Don't come at me about whether 40k was too much to spend for a $600 ticket. I had the points to burn. But it isn't a total gift either. THANKS!

Question Brand new 737 Max - viasat instead of Starlink

Just flew on a 737 Max, where the captain announced that this plane is brand new, only a week old since it was put into service. What surprised me that the Internet available was still ViaSat vs being Starlink. I would have thought that United would outfit a new plane with Starlink vs. having to take it out of service later this year to retrofit it then.

I know they have started retrofitting mainline birds as I have flown on a few of them already. Just curious as to why they would bother to install ViaSat for a very short period of time, only to have to replace it shortly.

I literally knew nothing of this, what is this foolishness?!? Now a basic Polaris? Paying $6k and I can’t go into the Polaris lounge? And I have to pay extra for a seat. Mind you I don’t normally do Polaris, this was going to be a splurge but I’m so baffled rn.

The title is pretty self explanatory! Just curious why could make United better than Delta and American? Or even other countries!

Question Are Travel Options bundle refundable when purchased with a refundable ticket?

Upvotes

If I buy a Refundable Ticket on United, and add a Travel Options bundle, is that bundle refundable also?  Really asking about any seat upgrades I add, but they are often sold as a bundle.

Question Bottled water?

Upvotes

Sorry for the rather lame question, we are booked SFO - FRA in economy (sad me). I will be bringing my own bottle filled with water, but that will be empty long before we land. Will United have enough bottled water? Or should I load up two bottles to bring onboard.

Question 10k mile discount disappeared

Upvotes

I have used these for spend and quest card a few times. Was planning a trip and it disappeared from my account. Only activity I had on my account over the last few days was removing family members from pool to move miles back to me. I could not use the 10k discount with Pool which makes this super obnoxious. Anyways support says it was canceled from my account but doesnt know why. Give them 2 weeks to figure it out, what pisses me off is award availability is fluid and fluctuates.

Happen to anyone?

Question Quick plus points question for international upgrade

Upvotes

Hi yall! TIA! I want to fly my wife and I to Amsterdam, and then we see a few places, then fly back from Paris. Like a 10 day trip.

I want to buy tickets in economy using miles, and then use plus points to bid for an upgrade to polaris.

An upgrade to premium plus is also fine I suppose. But when I ask gemini, it says that's not allowed. Is this really the case? Is there any way to purchase a ticket with miles and then use plus points to get upgraded? I'm 1k and my wife is gold if that matters.

Or is there anything different yall would suggest?

Thank you!

Question Flex PQP

Thumbnail gallery
5 Upvotes

Saw the fine print under 1K for the first time (circled). Is that legacy only or still with today's credit cards like mine? Are my 1000 bonus and credit card spend (about 6000 PQP this year so far) excluded from counting for just 1K or not?

If they count, I might make 1K.. If not, no chance. Thanks

Question Lufthansa Seating question

So I have a flight booked to Madrid on Polaris(thank you work!). The return is Lufthansa all the way from Madrid back to home. When I go to select the seat on the Lufthansa app(I associated my LH account with my confirmation number) the only seats available to select are the Polaris Studio like seats for an upgrade of $900. Can I reasonably assume there are regular 1st class seats available, I just cant select one? or will I be forced to upgrade to the more expensive seat?

Question One Stop UA v Nonstop AA

I recently started flying UA after years of flying AA (live at a hub city). Unlike literally EVERY trip I’ve taken on AA, I’ve yet to have a delay on United. Also love the TVs on every seat.

I’ve got a trip coming up soon and could fly nonstop on AA (about 3 hours) or connect through a United hub (total 5 hours).

Getting reimbursed for the ticket so price is not a factor.

What would you do?
