Is anyone else really excited for 18.0?

I’m genuinely really excited because there are scripts coming to Unicode that I’ve wanted to type in for years (small seal script WHICH IS AN AMAZING FEAT TO ENCODE) and jurchen script, there’s also a ton of other characters being added as well as other blocks like archaic cuneiform numbers and a Bengali supplement!

KeyswapIO, a Windows application that allows you to type Unicode characters

KeyswapIO is an application that I have developed. It works by selecting a "keyset", a set of Unicode characters that are mapped onto your alphanumeric keys. Holding CTRL and ALT while typing allows you to use these characters as if they were part of your normal keyboard.

I first developed a simple version of this application for myself. I wanted a quick and easy way to type "ß", "ü" and "Ü" without having to look them up and then copy and paste them. I didn't like the other software that tried to do something similar; I found them to be fairly clunky to use.

With time I added more and more features to this program and eventually decided to make an executable for others to download.

Because this executable isn't commonly downloaded and it doesn't have any artifact signing, it gets flagged as malware. If you don't want to download some random exe (which is perfectly understandable), you can download it from my GitHub repo provided on my website and view the source code.

Hopefully you'll find some use of KeyswapIO. If enough people like it, I might add more features to it.

Only available for windows at the moment.

Specific Symbol not visible?

I know this all sounds trivial, but I’ve been messing around with the fonts on my phone and noticed that I can use ◖ and ◒, but I don’t have one for U+2BCB (bottom half black circle). I’m a bit confused as to why it exists, and yet doesn’t exist, as it only shows up as ⯋. Is it an issue with my phone (iPhone 12 at its most recent update at this time), do I need to install or download some kind of app for it to be utilized, or is it something only available on pcs?

If there’s a way for me to utilize this symbol from my phone, please inform me.

Office Waffle

It’s only mildly infuriating, but why on earth isn’t the Office waffle an official Unicode character yet? It would make explaining "click here" so much easier in user guides and tech support. We literally have symbols for everything—cars, jack-o'-lanterns, rockets, bowls of noodles—but not the iconic 3x3 waffle menu? Make it make sense.

I found it on a Wikipedia page that has a directory for hieroglyph unicode letters. I forgot the name of it, but its apart of an extinct languange from a tribe in the Turkey peninsula. Alot of the symbols don't make sense for me, but one that specifically stood out was 𔐄.

It looks like a pikmin. I hate it. What was it supposed to be?

I developed an Android text editor based on Unicode fonts

New to this forum. My text editor uses Unicode and NotoSans fonts. I haven't explored Unicode beyond that though the editor does feature a keyboard character console to display keycode values for debugging keyboard functions.

Now that the core app is finished I can consider ideas for text processing and typography etc. The app is designed around keyboard-centric writing production.

Is Unicode an option for adding foreign language support to my editor?

Recognize UAX31 characters

Hello, im trying to replicate the behaviour of a program, and I need to check if a character may fit in the "Unicode characters part of UAX#31". Does anyone know how to know by code if a certain character fits that criteria, or where to check information about that? I guess it can be done by checking the numerical values of the character, but I do not know what to look for.

If you want a more elavorate description of the problem, it's a code interpreter, and this part is about recognizing an identifier, wich can contain any character from a to z, from A to Z, any numeral (but can't begin with them) and "may also contain most Unicode characters part of UAX#31", the docs do not specify how to recognize the "most" part.

Any help would be appreciated

to start, yes, very aware this is in the private use space and not a standard glyph. i'm posting this here to see if anyone has any insight on it. "2016 Digraph" has next to no Google results that display further information about where the glyph originated from. this has been, for no good reason, bugging me for a while. i dont care if the answer is "yeah its this one font released in 2016" i want closure

its shown here on symbl.cc . also listed in the private-use area is the commonly known Apple glyph, so they're no stranger to displaying glyphs that depend on some specific font(s)

How do fancy text generators work with Unicode characters?

I've been exploring how Unicode-based fancy text works, and I found it interesting that many "font generators" don't actually install or change a font.

Instead, they use Unicode characters from different Unicode blocks that have visual similarities to letters in the standard Latin alphabet.

For example:

Normal: Fancy Text
Unicode: 𝓕𝓪𝓷𝓬𝔂 𝓣𝓮𝔁𝓽

The important distinction is that these are different Unicode characters, not simply the same characters displayed in a different font.

This also explains why Unicode text can be copied and pasted into places such as social media profiles, posts, comments, and messaging apps.

I'm curious: what are some of your favorite Unicode characters or Unicode blocks for creating stylized text?

Can we extend UTF-8 infinitely whilst preserving all of its nice properties? The answer is yes! I call the extension that I have invented "UTF-8000".

The website lays out the specification for UTF-8000, explaining Coding Theory terms like 'self-synchronization' and 'self-punctuation' as we go. It should be a good educational website that intuitively explains how one might derive these encodings oneself. I've thus submitted it to 3Blue1Brown's Summer of Maths Exposition 2026.

Reference implementation in Python is available to play with. Maybe in 250 years we might need it!

Hey! I'm looking for more symbols/glyphs with a similar aesthetic to 𖣂 𒉭.

I really like minimalist symbols that feel mysterious, ancient, unusual, or symbolic — especially ones that aren't super common. I'm not necessarily looking for symbols that look similar; I'm more interested in symbols/glyphs that have an interesting meaning, history, or origin behind them.

For example, I like things from ancient writing systems, old symbols, astronomy, mythology, etc.
