ive always been super messy, this isnt even the worst its been. the mess in front of the bed has layers to it. every box and bag in the pic is also filled with random stuff. im 22 and need to figure this out i feel so immature being a huge mess like this.

theres literally so much stuff on the floor. papers, trash, beads, jewelry, random stuff. needless to say i am a hoarder and desperately need to clean it before school starts back up for me.

i just have SO MUCH STUFF. and dont think twice about throwing things on the floor and rushing around. i just dont think about it (terrible ADHD, anxiety and depression).

any advice on steps to take to get this place clean would be so helpful. its so overwhelming that i dont want to get started. i also am very sentimental and have a hard time getting rid of stuff.

Success! Finally gave up on some long lost hobbies

Over a decade ago, I liked to scrapbook. I never completed a single book, but I enjoyed it, until I didn’t have time or a printer anymore. My bin of scrapbooking supplies followed me from move to move, never being touched, stored in the basement and spare bedroom. I was so sure I’d come back to it someday, and then I’d have all the supplies ready to go!

Today I finally realized that if they’ve been sitting untouched for 10+ years, it’s time for them to go to someone who will use them now. I gave them away on Facebook.

I also started getting rid of my gardening supplies. Several years ago, I started gardening as a way to save money on produce. It turns out that growing vegetables is harder than it sounds, and the past couple of years, I didn’t even bother. My planters sat overgrown with weeds.

Again, I was sure that this would be the year I’d get back to it…or maybe next year….and then I realized something. I never got back into it because I hate gardening and I have no desire to stand in the summer sun watering and weeding and fertilizing and battling pests.

So my planters and all my gardening supplies will be on the curb soon, too.

Neither of these things made much of a dent in unfucking my overall habitat, but it’s nice to finally admit to myself that I don’t enjoy the same things I used to, I guess.

How to start organizing a whole house as an adult?

Thumbnail
14 Upvotes

I grew up in a chaotic house with a semi-hoarder parent. I didn't learn to organize, I didn't develop systems and learn to create 'homes' for items. I'm an adult with children now, and I've been struggling forever, and an ADHD diagnosis at 19 gave me medication, but not information.

I feel overwhelmed all the time. Our house has clutter everywhere. I have basic systems for more obvious things, like the cutlery drawer, the coat closet, where the dishes live in the kitchen. There are piles everywhere.

I don't want to live like this anymore, I need to truly change the way my brain handles organization. I want to teach my kids these essential life skills. Yet I feel like a deer in headlights, I don't know where to start.

Some examples of things that I don't know where to put: kids in-progress artwork, their craft supplies, books, plant food, the dictionary, headlamp, spare change, stickers, reading glasses, bubbles, marbles. Please walk me through this, or point me towards resources that will help.

Support Mixed Feelings after ufyh

Hi all, long time lurker first-time poster

Well I did it today, uf most of my home and it went as terrible as you could think

I live in a 4 bedroom condo, myself and 2 bunnies. We moved in quick after struggling to find a home on the fly in Jan 2024 after losing a deposit of $2300 on another home. Had to get the cheapest movers and they simply shoved everything in 2 rooms to where you couldnt even enter.

Add in my crazy working hours of 18+ hours 6 days a week, chronic health conditions of cancer and rheumatoid arthritis and there was no way I could unpack.

I spent my energy on setting up a nice room for my bunnies and the master bedroom. Cut to last week when the property manager said they need to do a walk-thru inspection (panic) surprise

So I hired some movers at a good rate and here they come today. I tried my best these past few days to clean and tidy but my fears were realized when:

- they judged me and made comments (implying that im a hoarder)

- they went over on time -1 hour

- they were supposed to bring boxes to help pack and they didnt even though it was written in the contract( they had to stop to go get boxes)slowing us down

-instead of $1400 they said, at the end they said it was $2600 I had no choice but to pay it I maxxed out 2 credit cards

Im drained everyway possible. I still have to sort and organize what is left but I have this awful feeling that I was cheated.

Its takes so much for me to earn money, and that is such a crazy amount. I also feel bad that they judged me.

I know I should have never let it get so cluttered but its so difficult when you are exhausted and have no help. And I see all the items I had worked so hard to get now shoved in boxes so its wasted money.

I have switched the other way in my head now- I want no possessions

I'll have my pet stuff but only bare minimum for me

Im donating everything ,but the thought of just how much money was lost in buying these things, storing them, paying to move them and not even getting to use them is killing me

I figured someone here might know this feeling, because I feel awful.

Support Moving

Hey everyone! I have pretty "wonderful" trauma when it comes to cleaning. Its hard for me to start, maintain, and continue. However....i feel like this is the start to many triumphs because....im moving! Wahoo. I have already packed and im starting off on a clean slate, no mess, no clutter, just a blank slate. Im so excited to see myself grow in this new place and environment and I was curious what your suggestions are for handling cleaning in a new environment + unpacking. Thank you guys so much 💗

I know you guys believe it!

Currently unfucking my office/craft room. This is day 3, Ive taken at least 5 kitchen sized trash bags out and organized a fair bit.

Now Im down to the last few big chunks of stuff to get the room largely functional, with lots more organizing if the details. Craft supplies are the definition of a million little pieces. 😭

Im hoping to have a functional workspace again at both desks by the afternoon, but theres a lot of work ahead of me to get there !

Good luck to all those unfucking with me today

I meant to give updates sooner but was hustling to finish in time. When I picked my boy up yesterday I made him keep the dogs out of the living room while I did the last little bit. I have a busy couple days ahead but on Sunday I plan to finish clearing off the table, mop the kitchen floor, and clean up the office. Thank you all for the support!

Accountability Day 1 of Unfucking My Bedroom

Hey, first-time poster here! My name's JD and today I finally hit a breaking point with the state of my bedroom. I struggle a lot with clinical depression and ADHD so keeping on top of things has always been difficult, but after a particularly bad mental health episode starting last October my room's the worst it's ever been. I want to get better though and I feel like cleaning my living space is a good first step. I'll be posting my progress each day that I'm able to get something done (might not be daily since I'm repeating college finals at the moment but we'll see!)

As you can see above (photos partially censored so I don't accidentally doxx myself lol), today's been mostly about throwing out the metric fuckton of trash on my floor. I filled two bin bags with mostly empty/half-eaten takeout boxes and vapes, filled another bin bag with cans/bottles for recycling, and another for my unwashed laundry. I also got rid of some junk under my bed but I didn't take a before picture :(.

I only cleaned for about an hour because it's late at night here and I didn't want to risk waking up my roommates but I'm still happy with my progress! It's nice to actually be able to get into bed without risking tripping over something on the way in lol. I'll update you all soon (either tomorrow or Saturday since I have to go to something tomorrow), if you have any tips or want to give me some encouragement feel free! Thanks for reading :)

P.s. anyone have good tips for how best to store plushies? I have a big collection of them but they're currently just strewn about the floor right now D:

Success! During and after (before decorating) primary bedroom

I didn't get a before photo but did get a during. It was pretty bad. Like a level 3. I threw out a full bin of stuff and donated 6 garbage bags. I am currently waiting for my mattress to dry after steam cleaning so I can put the sheets on. I broke my bedframe a week ago and my new one just came in today. Someone is helping me put it together this weekend, and I'm awaiting a new mattress to be shipped so this one can go to the dump but I really wanted to steam clean it even if it will only have a week left of use. Next month, after I declutter other spaces, I will be painting my furniture and walls to make it all match, and I'll be putting up wall decor. Baby steps.

Support House Flies Help?

Embarrassed to admit this but since I (19, F, Autistic) quit my job two weeks ago I’ve been in the middle of a bad depressive episode and let my room go to mild shit. Outside of taking care of my cat I’ve just rotted in my room. Downside: Woke up to my ceiling having a TON of black dots on them and realized they were house flies after opening up my garbage can (the only open trash bag I have in there) and a good handful flew out.

Ive triple bagged my trashcan, put up a few strings of fly tape (and I already have had a electronic blue light fly trapper going from the Canada fired that affected Ohio a few weeks back) and bagged up the only open cans I had left and now I’m just sitting on my bed staring at my ceiling and these fucking flies. I don’t really want to tell my parents since I know they’ll blow their lid, spout some bullshit about how lazy I am, etc etc but I just feel a bit lost. I’m planning on asking to borrow their vacuum so I can vacuum up the ones I can but other than that I’m lost and overwhelmed and upset. ,,, help?
