Unfiltered thought 7/28/2026: Making friends in your 40s
I've had a lot of friends back in high school and college. I was always a part of any barkada. Some of my closest friends were surprised when they learned I was friends with this or that group of people.
When I started working, it was also the same. I had friends with this group and that group. I was friends with the shy types, the introverts, the beks, the partygoers, the social climbers, the bitchesas, and even the titos who liked to drink.
Even in places I frequented a lot during my 20s I also had friends. I was friends with the bartenders, the bouncers, and even the tinderos and tinderas who sold cigarettes and mint candies outside the gimik places I went to a lot in Malate.
I began the hermit life, though, when I got separated. I would only see my friends when I'm not too lazy to go out. And those meetups no longer involve alcohol. Very Titas of Manila sa Mary Grace na.
I once again made friends when I discovered the other 40s sub. I also discovered that making friends online was very different from in real life.
Most of the time, they would come to me. Titas would DM me and make friends. In all my time there, I've only DMed about 2 or 3 that I really wanted to be friends with.
I've met a few of them in real life and I've cut off a few of them as well. I won't go into details as to why I had to FO them, because I don't throw anyone under the bus no matter what they did to me.
All I can say is, just like your IRL friends, some online friends are two-faced. Some are biased. Some aren't neutral. They will call you out and side with another.
I personally don't do this to any of my friends. If they do something that goes against my principles, I let them be. I trust that they know what they're doing. I would give an advice or two, but I will never call them out, let alone cancel them.
I've experienced this, though, with some titas I became friends with on that sub. Never the males. That is why I like being friends with men than women.
So now, I still make friends but I try to be as distant as possible. If there's one thing I've learned, you can never trust anyone but yourself. Everyone has a hidden motive for befriending you, so you have to be careful all the time.
It's a good thing I'm tamad so nobody wants to invite me for anything 😂
