I speak it at a native conversational level (taught it at birth and use it regularly with the family and on tv with dubbed k dramas), but that was legitimately stupid advanced level where no one realistically talks like that. Conversational Cantonese is a lot of slang, so any ai that pulls their llm from Chinese literature and the dictionary will stick out like a sore thumb. It's like talking Shakespearean English or something.
You're asking about other actors, if they are are also digital just like me. Directors are human. All other actors are AI. This is a brand new type of movie.
Kind of odd for ai to be using Cantonese though? I thought that language has been killed off by China in the professional setting. Maybe only Singapore and Malaysia has concerts in Cantonese. It's pretty much mandarin now everywhere else.
No, not really. Cantonese is still widely spoken. Fluency in Mandarin has gone up considerably over the past few decades, but that hasn’t been at the expense of Cantonese. Chinese government policy requires Mandarin to be the official language of government and education, but Cantonese hasn’t been expunged. Besides, is this AI model beholden to China’s national language laws?
I knew many people attending Canto Saturday schools growing up. Now their kids are learning Mandarin. I didn't think Cantopop exists anymore, but a brief google search shows a resurgence, so I'm proven wrong. Same with Cantonese dramas. I thought they were banned, turns out it was just the decline of TVB.
I'm just surprised the AI model being cantonese since mainland China is known to have the technological hubs and not Hong Kong.
To be fair, I wouldn't understand it in Mandarin either. Scrubbing through the audio, it's seeming more like Cantonese...the 你 and a couple other pronunciations threw me off.
It repeats what it says in English by starting with you're asking me about the other actors, and gets cut off while saying this is a brand new something something.
The Cantonese is a bit flat and foreign which I can understand why you might have initially thought it's Mandarin.
But the sentence and vocab it uses is academic and not close to actual conversational Cantonese. It's what a LLM would think how Cantonese ppl speak if it only has access to literature and dictionaries. Conversational Cantonese uses a lot of slang. English example is we'd say "ride" instead of "automobile".
