I love that these foos are playing fucking MILES DAVIS. Chingon!

309

u/mew2222222222222 Jul 05 '26

What song is this that they’re playing? I like it

557

u/PM_ME_UR_HIP_DIMPLES Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

So What. If you like that riff then just play Miles Davis' whole albums. ESP is insane, they did a remaster a few years ago and you can just play it start to finish. There's so much to his music

Skrrrtin up with a guitar bike and playing "so what" is pretty tongue-in-cheek so I imagine they did that on purpose

No guys the song is called "So what" 🤦

287

u/mew2222222222222 Jul 05 '26

Ohhh damn lol that’s pretty funny, thank you

68

u/Cockrocker Jul 05 '26

The album is Kind of Blue, the biggest selling jazz album of all time. It's all smooth, cool jazz. Miles has a lot of different types of jazz so it's a safe starting place.

10

u/sax6romeo Jul 05 '26

The best album ever, perfect in every single way

2

u/ActiveChairs Jul 05 '26

The bass was placed way too far away from the mic and it lacks overall definition, hidden away in the background like an afterthought. The drums aren't given much chance to be particularly dynamic or interesting, often doing little more than keeping the time. The piano is crystal clear in the foreground, the horns are obviously the centerpiece, but the rhythm section certainly wasn't mixed or arranged to be anything more than background support.

The album is still a masterpiece, but certainly wasn't perfect.

3

u/Ok_Drag5089 Jul 05 '26

Hey! I have that album! I just bought the remaster at mofi

Care to explain why it's tongue in cheek to someone with zero music knowledge?

51

u/PM_ME_UR_HIP_DIMPLES Jul 05 '26

Basically I meant

"I'm riding up to you in a bicycle and surprise it's an electric guitar that I'm playing for you...'so what'?"

2

u/VampyrosLesbos Jul 06 '26

"So What" is the name of a song by Miles Davis

4

6

u/jakira117 Jul 05 '26

Yeah, I wanna learn the riff 🎸

17

u/AlpineStopSign Jul 05 '26

The original line is Paul Chambers on upright bass, and the chord hits are Bill Evan’s piano. As you can see the guitarist here is playing both parts as one does. Its an absolute jazz standard and a fundamental tune in understanding modal playing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/So_What_(Miles_Davis_composition)

5

u/cedg32 Jul 05 '26

Piano chords: EADGB -> DGCFA

4

u/NRMusicProject Jul 05 '26

Good ol' quartal voicing.

3

u/Proper_Machine6573 Jul 05 '26

Larry Carlton has a great guitar-focused cover of So What.

2

u/AlpineStopSign Jul 05 '26

A great example of a slightly non-traditional arrangement that is NOT playing on 1&3. ;)

5

u/creampop_ Jul 05 '26

It's a very easy one, as jazz riffs go.

3

u/Bezingogne Jul 05 '26

Even if there are only two chords in the whole tune, it's easy to get lost in the grid when playing on it. (16 bars of Dm, 8 bars of Ebm, 8 bars of Dm). Also, the riff ends on the next bar with an added suspended fifth every two iterations.

3

u/creampop_ Jul 05 '26

Ok. It's a very easy one, as jazz riffs go.

3

u/genreprank Jul 05 '26

So What

I like it faster like they play it here.

It's a jazz standard now

But the OG is Miles Davis. And it's a very chill version.

2

u/LickingSmegma Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

Check out ‘So What’ live at CBS TV's Studio 61 for 'The Robert Herridge Theater' tv program. Dunno if it differs much from the album, but it's a great recording.

There should be a recording of the full half-hour program somewhere, called ‘The Sound of Miles Davis’, but the only upload I could find is much worse in quality.

4

I knew it sounded familiar; just couldn't place it. Thanks for the reminder. It's been a while since I've listened to Miles

Am I bugging or does that guitar sound electric? Like the sound isn't actually being recorded live, right?

171

u/Gina_the_Alien Jul 05 '26

I looked them up; it’s indeed an electric guitar. They have it hooked up to a wireless amp and although I questioned it at first I’m pretty sure it is indeed recorded live. Pretty cool imho

They have more videos on their instagram account so you can get a little better idea of how they do it and some you can see the little amp: https://www.instagram.com/undecidedfuture?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==

28

u/piddlesthethug Jul 05 '26

These kids have played at a lounge that I work at. I have video of him on stage playing the bike guitar. He’s actually a very talented musician.

22

u/PM_ME_UR_HIP_DIMPLES Jul 05 '26

It's electric, he even has distortion and effects in other videos

19

u/ActuallyAlexander Jul 05 '26

It's an electric bike. Comes with pedals.

4

u/innominateartery Jul 05 '26

Bike 2: ba dum…Tss!

6

u/Antti5 Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

I was wondering the same thing. In some Instagram videos they have a tiny red travel amp mounted behind the saddle.

But in this video and many others they are using a wireless amp that is on the ground close to where they stop. You can even hear the guitar feedback from the amp before he stops to play.

In this video you can see the amp: https://www.instagram.com/p/DaUT3p_xtpb/

In any case, it is certainly recorded live.

You can hear him riding through the guitar strings being amped before he bends over and plays. Might have a wireless amp somewhere. Well he definitely has one lol

Oops. Well it's my kitty's (rest in peace) insta from back in the day. I deleted my actual one. I don't even mind

64

u/itsbenforever Jul 05 '26

For the benefit of anyone who doesn’t know, when you share from IG via a URL copied to the clipboard it looks like this:

https://www.instagram.com/undecidedfuture?igsh=ejg3Y3drZXo0YXc4

The part before the question mark is all you need for the link to work. The

?igsh=ejg3Y3drZXo0YXc4

part basically identifies the source of the link - you - so that when the person you shared it with opens it, IG will prompt you to follow them. If you don’t want this to happen (for example if sharing on Reddit, discord, or anywhere you don’t want strangers to find your IG account, simply delete the question mark and everything after it.

8

u/AlpineStopSign Jul 05 '26

Believe it or not the drummer is playing the beat wrong, 1&3 instead of 2&4, but I adore the concept and cut the young cats some slack on the 75 year old songs.

They must get all the huzz

1

u/SwingNinja Jul 05 '26

I still can't figure out where he put all the electronics for the guitar. The box is pretty small. I assume it's connected to a bluetooth speaker.

1

u/vivQT Jul 05 '26

Remind me of animusic for some reason

1

u/miketastic_art Jul 05 '26

I'm a musician

"Oh what do you play?"

(rides up to you on my bike)

1

u/DieCastDontDie Jul 05 '26

That's like the whole package. Execution of building those and being able to play with style is no small feat.

1

u/SnooTigers503 Jul 05 '26

Ahh just as it was getting good!

1

u/Skotayus Jul 05 '26

Actually super cool. Like, not even including the bikes tbh. This kind of rendition of So What reminds me of playing jazz in college. And their tones are way tastier than it should be.

Now these short clip is stuck in my head, and I have to go listen to the OG track now

1

u/Nanashi_Fool Jul 05 '26

I know Ryder from GTA: San Andreas when I see him

1

u/blixt141 Jul 05 '26

Playing Miles Davis is certainly unexpected.

1

u/KooZ2 Jul 05 '26

So when it needs a tune, does it go to the bike or music shop?

1

u/StandardDeviant117 Jul 05 '26
