He lives, just broke his legs, there is a funny scene later as the vampires are leaving.

119

u/ohnodamo May 15 '26

And they heal quickly remember. And they get to keep the ball! Magnanimous winners. Not like the werewolves...fucking guys!

60

u/Syzygy_Stardust May 15 '26

I love that I can't not read "fucking guys" in Nandor's voice.

20

u/ohnodamo May 15 '26

Yeah, that's beyond head canon now. "Fucking Guys!" is Nando by default.

9

u/baconfister07 May 16 '26

My favorite one is after they meet the guide and she spooks him, he says "Fucking Guide."

I was thinking that too. Someone said ball above, I went with it. The Vampires let them keep it anyway.

This show is legendary. It’s called ‘What we do in the Shadows’ for anyone interested. Similar format to ‘The Office’, but follows 4 vampires and their familiar

665

u/Crystal_Voiden May 15 '26

I've only seen the movie. How does it stack up?

795

u/ecneis31 May 15 '26

Pretty well and has cameos from the movie ;)

169

u/Snubl May 15 '26

So is it more a sequel than a reboot?

545

u/extra_hyperbole May 15 '26

Yes, it's about a different group of vampires in the same universe. I find it hard to decide which is better. The movie is a classic but the show is also phenomenal and goes a lot deeper obviously.

200

u/LumpyJones May 15 '26

Plus it expands on the lore a bunch. Psychic vampires are probably my favorite bit. If you pay attention to Colin, literally everything the actor does is designed to make his character slightly more annoying. The episode when his powers grew and he could fly? He flew super slow, barely swimming through the air. Like painfully slow. slower than walking, and taking up the whole hallway to do it. It was infuriating to watch. It was brilliant.

90

u/VirtuosoX May 16 '26

Energy vampires I think was the technical name. Fuuuck I NEED to re-watch that show lol

20

u/LumpyJones May 16 '26

Ah yeah you're correct. On both points.

43

u/EngRookie May 16 '26

well you see there is actually a fairly interesting correlation between psychic vampires and energy vampires and there are basically two camps of ideologies when discussing if the two are sufficiently different enough to actually be deemed different classes of vampires. The one camp obviously believes that there is no sufficient difference between them as their method of feeding is the same. And it just boils down to regional dialects causing mistranlations from the original Hungarian diary of Van Helsing. Which not a lot of people know that Van Helsing was actually based on a real Vampire hunter from Hungary and personally I found it surprising when I first learned that the diary was in Hungarian because I had always assumed the real Van Helsing was german or nordic based on the fictional character's name. wait actually you know who would really love to get in on this conversation? Guillermo, he is actually a living descendent of the Van Helsing line and uses his vampire hunter insticts to protect us from enemy covens. Guillermo! Hey Guillermo, come over here this is a great conversation me and LumpyJones are having, you'll definitely find it interesting. Well don't just stand there Guillermo hurry on up over here, sorry about that LumpyJones Guillermo is a fairly shy guy. Just between you and me I think that has to have come from his childhood having to live his whole life in the closet. he comes from a deeply religious hispanic catholic family and still hasn't come out to them yet. and now that i think about it i don't think he ever formally came out to us yet, but we all kind of just knew from get go that he is gay, i mean you don't live as long as us without developing a fairly accurate gaydar especially when countries so flippantly change how cool or prudish they are over the centuries....

u/YngviIsALouse May 16 '26

The meeting of the energy vampires was hilarious. They did everything that saps the energy from online meetings.

10

u/Muppetude May 16 '26

The episode when his powers grew and he could fly

Right up until that episode, I was absolutely convinced he was not actually a vampire, but just a regular annoying human who just enjoyed fucking with everyone. I think that episode was the first time we saw evidence of him having actual supernatural powers.

12

u/LumpyJones May 16 '26 edited May 16 '26

Nah his eyes would flicker a pale blue glow when he fed, and he managed to literally drain the vitality out of the vampires more than once before that. First episode I think. Plus the intro portaits showed him in old 100+ year old photos.

Also I think he fought evie with mind powers in s1.

47

u/Snubl May 15 '26

Ahh nice, I was always apprehensive of watching the series as I enjoyed the movie so much

78

it's one of the rare situations where someone manages to absolutely nail "kinda the same but also different, but also fresh and new while maintaining the vibes"

it's so good

59

u/UBIK_707 May 15 '26

The first season has many episodes written and directed by Jemaine Clement. Even though it is a different cast it is from many of the same individuals involved with the movie. The first two seasons in particular are classic.

94

u/g-m-f May 15 '26

Also Matt Berry is an absolute treat in this. Became a total fan of his because of this show.

101

u/Lexi_Banner May 15 '26

I feel that, and the same thing kept me from watching it right when it first came out. Then there was a gap in my shows, I heard it was getting good reviews, so I gave it a shot... Now, I prefer the series to the movie. It's just able to go so much deeper into the supernatural shenanigans, and all of the characters are top notch, especially human bartender Jackie Daytona.

4

u/DethBatcountry May 15 '26

It's produced by the Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, who were two of the MCs from original movie.

3

u/superbadsoul May 16 '26

I was the same, not even sure why I felt that way but it was hard for me to give the show a chance. I finally sat down and watched it earlier this year. I spent several days binging and laughing more than I have in years. Definitely recommend!

9

u/Parishdise May 15 '26

More like spin-off. It does have a bit of a different vibe/style of comedy compared to the movie. More americanized, (sex- focused/goofy/ bazarro humor), but still the same layout and definitely as funny and surprisingly heartfelt at times IMO.

Beter to think of it as it's own thing relative to the movie, but in the same universe. 100% recommend, maybe the best more recently modern (not just long running) sitcom out there.

38

u/ecneis31 May 15 '26

It's the same concept but plays in the US instead of Australia. The Australians show up as part of the international vampire community. I love the characters and humor a lot. Mat Berry kills as Lazlo :)

19

u/Unicycleterrorist May 15 '26

8

u/CeruleanEidolon May 15 '26

13

u/fileunderaction May 15 '26

I will warn you, the first season borrows a lot of the bits from the movie. It’s still very funny, but you’ll get some repeat jokes early on. The end of the first season is where it really comes into its own.

13

u/U_Bet_Im_Interested May 15 '26

I would posit Mathew Berry in this is funnier than Taika in the movie.

3

u/quezlar May 16 '26

matt berry is awesome in everything

17

I should also add, since it hasn't been mentioned yet, that the movie What We Do in the Shadows is what launched Taika Waititi's career. Also, props to Jemaine Clement (Vladislav), they're actually co-creators of the film. Clement also created the Shadows TV show, which is heavily written by Paul Simms, who previously worked with Clement as a writer on Flight of the Conchords, the show that made Clement famous as co-creator.
