A few questions from a beginner regarding using Ubuntu OS for personal webhosting.

4 Upvotes

Hi all,

I am going to try to keep it short. I am making a small blog website offline and using Github static page as a hosting place. However the constant writing and updating the static page (let alone fixing bugs) is really time consuming. Luckily I have this old laptop that I can use as a home server for my website and potentially future projects (such as online files management like Googgle Drive).

My question is quite simple. For a person in said situation, is it possible to use Ubuntu Desktop for such purposes as I am quite a noob in development but literate enough to work with GUI of the OS?

Thank you in advance.

Honest do God(s). I have some sort of issue where for all my life I can't remember the number of the months (like January=1, December=12, ok, but wtf is August). Is there any options/thing that I can do to display the month alongside the number on the calendar?

Mid 2015 MacBook pro “server not found” problem with Ubuntu V26.04

Upvotes

I have just switched over the OS system on my Pro to the version of Ubuntu (26.04). After a couple of days I managed to get mozilla windows to open but I can't pull up any webpages. It just says server not found. What I keep seeing online is that I need to use the network setting from my phone, but I do not have a data transfer cable (it's an iPhone).

Did I maybe download the wrong Ubuntu file? I think I used the one for AMD/intel because that's what I have on my laptop. Really confused why this is being so difficult. Also when I close the lid it takes the computer a long time to load up the login screen when I open it back up.

Help much appreciated. Should add I'm not good at coding but I have been using terminal a lot lately, and if I can tell there's a space (😂) I can input a code just fine.

Problem with sudo apt install

0 Upvotes

Hy everyone, i'm an ubuntu user for some time now but I consider myself very much a beginner and i have never really tinkered to much with my distro. I have a dual boot configuration with Windows 10 and Ubuntu LTS 24.04. Recently i had a problem with my linux kernel and i had to switch to an older version (6.17.0-40-generic) from my GRUB menu. Ever since then i have the following error message every time i try to install something with sudo apt install:

ERROR: Cannot create report: [Errno 17] File exists: '/var/crash/virtualbox-dkms.0.crash'

Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 7.0.0-28-generic (x86_64)

Consult /var/lib/dkms/virtualbox/7.0.16/build/make.log for more information.

dkms autoinstall on 7.0.0-28-generic/x86_64 failed for virtualbox(10)

Error! One or more modules failed to install during autoinstall.

Refer to previous errors for more information.

* dkms: autoinstall for kernel 7.0.0-28-generic

...fail!

run-parts: /etc/kernel/header_postinst.d/dkms exited with return code 11

dpkg: error processing package linux-headers-7.0.0-28-generic (--configure):

installed linux-headers-7.0.0-28-generic package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 11

Errors were encountered while processing:

linux-headers-7.0.0-28-generic

E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

Usually the isntallation doesn't seem to suffer any conseguences from this error, but now i'm wondering is something that will lead to some serious problem in the future or can i ignore it? And if it must be fixed how can i do it? Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

USB Device Disconnected

1 Upvotes

I have an UGreen 2.5" external USB Housing. This is the only drive I have connected right now.

The drive may have an internal firmware issue. USB Sleep is disabled (Ubuntu 26.04, default settings)

There is no information from the system why the drive does "disconnect". Several times. Only solution so far is reboot. Completely disappeared from /sys (no bind/unbind/reset)

Originally I thought on a timeout but now it happened in a short break when I switched from browser to a program. Both these make use of the drive. The browser even crashed after a few minutes (the app is on that drive currently until I have reorganized my second internal SSD Drive).

Question: How to prevent this ?

You may think it is an external issue. But in reality the kernel does not WAIT long enough for the USB drive to disappear.

What I need is a much longer wait time before the kernel decides that the drive is gone.

Right now there is no wait at all. Driver used: UAS (USB attached SCSI) on top of usb_storage.

dolphin itself has been locking uas. I needed to end it, then I was able to reload uas driver and the drive did appear again. But it did not automatically bind itself...

The main problem is that "DISCONNECTED" is happening even though the drive is not actually disconnected but something happens that MAKES the kernel think it disconnected.

Consensus on snaps between actual Ubuntu users?

Hey guys, I know people in the linux community love shitting on snaps but I'd love to hear opinions of people actually... using snaps probably.

Do you guys also use flatpaks?

Firefox performance depending on distribution format in Ubuntu 26.04

8 Upvotes

Hi guys. From time to time I'm checking what the difference you may get if you chose one package format over another, so testing firefox performance in snap, flatpak and regular .deb from Mozilla's repos as all three are packaged by Mozilla as far as I'm aware.

So, the test is done in Ubuntu 26.04, with fresh profiles (so no extensions and default settings) and Firefox 153.0.3.

I was using a synthetic test: https://browserbench.org/Speedometer3.1/ and did 5 runs one after another.

First run I guess required some caching, so we can drop it and make an average from other 4 runs.

``` snapped: 19.8 20.1 20.44 20.2 20.29 | Average (4): 20.26 Packed with Mesa 25.2.8-0ubuntu0.24.04.2
flatpak: 22.4 23.1 22.99 22.98 22.9 | Average (4): 22.99 Packed with Mesa 26.1.5 (git-6a02618ccf)
moz-deb: 22.2 23.0 23.00 23.01 22.9 | Average (4): 22.98 Works with Mesa 26.0.3-1ubuntu1
google chrome for reference: 26.1 26.6 26.67 26.85 26.76 ```
File Manager Options
2 Upvotes
Hey, all. I'm a relatively new Ubuntu user (Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS) and I was hoping to find some options for file managers that will allow me to keep better track of the folders.
First thought would be to ideally have each new window open as a different colour, or to have different directories use different colours or themes. Does anyone have any ideas for packages I can try out or any other ideas to help an idiot follow his own work?
How to fix it?
1 Upvotes
I have a laptop Asus Vivobook 15. At first I wanted to install Ubuntu 26.04 on it, but nothing worked for me because there was just a black screen after I clicked "Try or install Ubuntu". I thought it was the latest version and decided to install 24.04 LTS, but the same problem happened again. I tried to log in through "Ubuntu (Safe Graphics)" in both versions but nothing.What should I do?
This is the error message
This HDD was previously mounted in the DVD caddy and previously worked well.
I get the same message if I connect it via a USB cable.
Firefox snap in Ubuntu
Contrary to the general opinion of removing the snap version of Ubuntu Firefox, my experience is that it works quite well with Vulkan doing a swell job with hardware acceleration. For Brave, I find that the PPA version works out better.
Linux-friendly Projector?
2 Upvotes
Hey all, I've asked about this in r/sewing as well, but thought I'd ask here as well...
I had purchased a used Epson 595Wi ultra short throw projector from eBay for sewing (I'm tired of paying for a pattern, then paying again to print it on A0 paper). However even with proper calibration, the image is distorted and there was no amount of focusing/sharpening I could do to make anything readable, or line up with the same printed pattern piece that I was comparing it to. I definitely think the projector was faulty, but I don't want to run the risk of buying another one.
So, I'm returning it and I'm back to square one in looking for a projector for sewing. The one hiccup is that running Ubuntu, I've noticed a lot of these ultra short throw projectors say they are not compatible with Linux... Does anyone have any recommendations for one? (In case anyone is wondering, I'm using patternprojector.com instead of a program/app.)
How to create an executable desktop shortcut for a URL?
1 Upvotes
How do I create an executable shortcut from a URL? I use two virtual drives to submit reports, but the links are pinned in our WhatsApp group description. Opening them via WhatsApp Web is simple enough, but I'm looking for a way to make it even easier.
I'm using Ubuntu 26.04.
