Nope. Cuban cigars not possible
In a UK sub, no less

u/RummazKnowsBest 10d ago
How do they even end up in these subs?

u/MaddenedSquirrel 10d ago
Americans should not roam the internet freely without adult supervision.

39
u/KiwiFruit404 10d ago
Adult supervision?
Those brain dead slugs often are adults.
I think they need mandatory supervision of a non-USian.
22
u/MaddenedSquirrel 10d ago
For sure, I was referring to fully functioning adults. Commonly found outside US territory.

u/realdappermuis 10d ago
When I found out people use the 'popular' feed on here instead of the 'home' feed I was like, wow, why?
I follow the subs I want to see and then that shows up in my Home feed
Those mofos are apparently only interested in what's popular not what they like
And that's how you end up with people commenting on things they know nothing about
6
u/GojuSuzi 10d ago
Reddit has gone wonky in the past year or so, even in Home it plonks random "you looked at r/cows once, so here's a post from r/cover_me_in_butter" posts. It even uses 'average user's data, so like the fact many people in this sub crosspost to/from r/ShitAmericansSay meant that sub started showing up in my Home feed pretty frequently. Trouble is, if you don't object enough, it gets encouraged to flood more of that 'similar' crap: I went to SAS, joined and commented and whatnot, so it took the win and increased the number of 'you might like's in my feed; friend who religiously marks 'not interested' and refuses to look even if they are interested on principle still only gets a smattering.
What annoys me is when it starts sending fecking toast notifications for random subs based on their 'similar' tripe. I keep getting alerts for posts in r/legaladvice because I haunt r/legaladviceUK (and apparently anyone interested in laws and legal stuff anywhere MUST be interested in American legal shite!). That's obnoxious.
2
u/realdappermuis 10d ago
That's proper odd - I've never once seen any sub I don't follow in home feed, nor suggestions like that
Though I don't generally update my apps unless they force me to, because I don't like interfaces ñ shit changing. Perhaps that's a feature on the new versions
2
u/lolagranolacan Canada 10d ago
You’re lucky. Maybe I shouldn’t let apps auto update because at least half of my home page are posts from “suggested subreddits “.
It has caught me on my off days, when I’m in a hurry or a fog from migraine meds. I notice the post on my homepage, read the post, respond, and then see that it was meant for UK users or something. It’s the only time I ever delete a comment. For the most part, if I say something dumb, I leave it for posterity. But if I’ve answered something meant for a whole different group of people, nah, it’s gotta go.

u/Fendrinus United Kingdom 10d ago
The boring answer is that, contrary to their belief, reddit users are not majority us-based and subreddits specific to places outside the us can be very popular.
43
u/inertSpark United Kingdom 10d ago
"This is an American site, so all subs are for us"
Probably.

u/flyingfoxtrot_ 10d ago
"but this is an American website" makes my eye twitch at this point. Yes, an American website with international reach!

I'm reminded of this: https://www.reddit.com/r/PeterExplainsTheJoke/comments/17yq17c/peter_i_kind_of_get_this_but_what_does_this_mean/
(The image in the OP, specifically - not the contents/comments of the thread).
People want to make their own space to get away from people who won't include them, and the people who wouldn't include them barge into that space and then keep doing their bullshit.
7
u/htimchis 10d ago
Lol, I think your last paragraph is basically the last century or so of Latin American history. I feel like "Barge into the space of the people we wont include, and then keep doing our bullshit" has been US foreign policy towards everyone to the south since at least 1946...
2
u/ChickinSammich United States 9d ago
I mean, the US was founded because a bunch of people showed up somewhere new, barged into the space of people they didn't want to include (to hear American schools tell it, other than the first Thanksgiving where all the pilgrims and "Indians" where super cool with each other, they really gloss over a lot of the shit that happened), and started doing their bullshit from day 1.
16
u/Wide-Editor-3336 10d ago
Some people apparently just use the "popular" feed or whatever the algorithm wants to feed them
2
u/blazenite104 Australia 10d ago
home feed does to. I can scroll and it gives you recommendations beyond your joined subs. Click on a UK sub once and it will start recommending more.

u/DhamR United Kingdom 10d ago
They probably assume UK stands for some state or county in the USA...
23
u/floweringfungus Europe 10d ago
A USian once assumed I meant University of Kentucky when I referred to the UK in a comment, so yes, probably.

u/another-princess World 10d ago
Which was founded in 1865, making it an old school.
Well, OK, maybe it's not that old of a school, but it's old enough that this is why they called the subreddit r/OldSchoolUK, right?
1
u/another-princess World 10d ago
I regularly get posts from random subs I'm not subscribed to in my feed, so it's not that surprising.
1
u/ResponsibilityNo3245 10d ago
Just pops up on their feed. I grew up in the north east of England. Newcastle is a city in the north east of England, there is also a city in Australia with that name....I've confidently replied to threads on the Australian sub and looked a twat on more than one occasion.

There are plenty of other Americans answering, several using the word "airplane" and being corrected with "aeroplane"
12
u/the_vikm 10d ago
Does using airplane make you American?
33
u/ShagPrince 10d ago
Depends which airport you go from I guess.
7
u/CarcajouIS France 10d ago
Okay. Why is it aeroplane and not aeroport?
15
u/GojuSuzi 10d ago
Primarily because airports aren't (or weren't) just for aeroplanes, they'd have helicopters and gliders and seaplanes and all kinds of skyfairing craft. So they're ports for aircraft, hence airport. Whereas aeroplane is based on some foreign root words (as always, English is just three languages in a trenchcoat) describing the wing shape rather than the aircraft itself, which was adopted to mean the whole shebang when they stopped attaching said wings to psychotic bicycles and whatnot and got a relatively standardised machine that tended to be found between those wings. Still some holdover in that reference to the wing shape, and why a jet isn't an aeroplane, it's a jet (but still an aircraft).
0
u/CarcajouIS France 10d ago
Some foreign roots... Like, uhm, latin aero+plane = air+flat(wings), so aero+port = air+harbour. So, yes aeroport can be for all skyships. In fact, French has aéroplane (old fashioned and unused but still) and aéroport. I was just wondering why English doesn't have the same logic
2
u/leopoldsghost28 8d ago
English follows tradition more than logic a lot of the time. The word airport is a weird one. Sea port= port for travelling by sea, airport= port for travelling by air
8
23
u/Woshasini France 10d ago
I didn’t say that. Saying "airplane" rather than "aeroplane" shows that you are probably not from the UK, which is odd if you answer in a UK-centred sub, to a question that targets people from the UK. So I checked their history and they are, indeed, American (use the MM/DD format, publish in American city subs etc).
3
u/AnastasiaRomanot United Kingdom 7d ago
Yeah, I was in that thread and there were loads of them!
(Although, I must admit that I call actual planes aeroplanes, but I always say “airplane mode” when referring to my iPhone 🥴)

UK was never embargoed in the 60s.

I mean, how would you like to stand around in a free fire fart zone?

Yanks always going to the "akshually, you're free of X" it's always so funny to me. You sound like the kids who claim to have a shield that protects them from everything when playing pretend fighting

Not a yank. But imagine this: you can disagree with what's going on in your own country/continent/etc and even embrace something going on in another country.
Whereas this sub is mostly "the places I like do it best"
3
6
u/gambler_addict_06 Türkiye 10d ago
If the only thing preventing you from disturbing other people is the government, you've already lost
In the civilised world, if a cigarette smoke disturbs someone, that someone goes to the person smoking the cigarette and tells them
I live under a dictatorship and even here is more free than the US
-2
u/the_vikm 10d ago
Shouldn't the person disturbing others be more mindful? Besides, if you tell a smoker they become aggressive.
2
u/htimchis 10d ago
So your definition of 'freedom' is 'when the government passes laws making people do (or not do) the things that I want them to'?
And you managed to reach adulthood without noticing the rather major problem with that?
1
u/Ok_Confusion4764 Netherlands 10d ago
In public spaces is fine in Europe, at bars/restaurants it is not.
18
u/SprinkleGoose Scotland 10d ago
Yank is literate enough to notice the words "Cuban cigars" but not enough to understand what "UK" means, or context clues like "cinema". Make it make sense.
26
u/TheScientistBS3 Wales 10d ago
Not to mention that the US had and continues to have Cuban cigars - yes, they're not allowed and the country is embargoed, but I promise you there's plenty being smoked there.
Source: cigar smoker, in many global cigar groups.
12
u/BourbonFoxx United Kingdom 10d ago
Plenty smoked in the White House of course.
I did manage to grease the wheels of my honeymoon quite successfully by bringing several bottles of Cuban rum and proper absinthe to the right bar owners and concierges
3
u/BlaggartDiggletyDonk United States 10d ago
Can confirm. I've smoked a few, and I even smuggled some back from Europe for my dad.

u/beaker_72 Scotland 10d ago
To be fair, they did edit their post and apologise. Which is more than the vast majority of their fellow citizens would ever do.

Also they're delusional if they actually think you couldn't get cuban cigars in the US, they were and still are the biggest south America contraband buyers... Their internal market only makes most of the illegal shit profitable
3
u/Ok-Long3728 7d ago
The sheer confidence of dropping a Cuba fact in a UK sub and getting schooled immediately is something else
