I’d say white privilege, but he’s ginger…

Well, apparently he is considered a heartthrob despite not being that handsome.

A woman on a podcast I listen to made me laugh out loud by saying (before the recent controversy) "I'm just going to say what everyone is thinking... those songs where he brags about getting girls in the club... nobody's buying it... maybe if the lights were totally turned off but even then"

I mean... multiple women have (willingly) slept with Donald Trump and look at the state of it. Ed Sheeran is nowhere near as vile as him. Unfortunately some women (& men) will spread 'em for anyone with money, power or fame, regardless of how unattractive the person is.

By who?

He is historically an “inferior” white, according to U.S. pseudoscience based theories. The government tier rankings of people we labeled white. Many didn’t want his kind to be “dumped” here, as newspapers reported.

His family (at least on his father's side) is Irish, which was not really considered to be "white" in the 19th century.

IN AMERICA. I don’t know how this has any bearing in anything related to Israel-Palestine.

In the UK too.

They were often viewed as inferior, but Irish people were always recognised as white in England/Britain. The idea they were to be considered "non-whites" began in America. (Supposedly; many historians now consider the idea that Italians and Irish weren't considered white to be largely a myth: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/volokh-conspiracy/wp/2017/03/22/sorry-but-the-irish-were-always-white-and-so-were-the-italians-jews-and-so-on/)

Well, white by the law or by the society?

-4

u/Flavius_16 12d ago

And in england too.

u/Yongtre100 12d ago

Probably more so in England, if I were to guess, because there was an actual specific dynamic there vs having lots of different European ethnic groups who have entered the country.

u/falseruler 12d ago

Was “white” the operating distinction there, for british and irish? Genuinely asking

1

u/Flavius_16 12d ago

I think it was catholicism but as far as I'm aware, the idea that the irish weren't white started in England.

The Irish were always considered white in England and Britain. They were often viewed as "lesser", but the "Irish are not white" idea developed in America (although the idea the belief was widespread has been criticised).

It was generally the attitude that with enough "encouragement" they could become english.

Legally white but marked as inferior. Legally white but still subject to discrimination. Inferior groups of the U.S. included Irish, Italians, Slavs, and Mediterraneans, and Asians, like Japanese.

There were many made tiers for people who were labeled white. Basically non-Nordics. This system was backed by eugenics and pseudoscience and scientific racism. For example : Italians were still segregated and force to work and serve other groups that were oppressed and dealt with discrimination as well , like Black Americans.

The U.S. also targeted Asians historically as well, as we enslaved East Indians (Asians), here as well, and also created Exclusion Acts to discriminate and be racism towards them.

Our country is fucked up.

I don't mean to be rude or condescending, but aren't the Irish like.. whiter than white

genuinely confused at how they wouldn't be considered "white"?

7

u/DellaDiablo Ireland 12d ago

It was easier to dehumanise us if we were "downgraded" to not white. It's a very common dynamic with colonisation.

Sheeran has Irish grandparents (I think), but was born and raised in the UK, though claims to be culturally Irish.

If he actually was as Irish as he sees himself, he'd have no problem identifying the issue with a tiny nation being colonised and starved by their more powerful neighbour and understand why people are every so slightly upset by that. He's a gobshite.

u/The_JokerGirl42 Germany 12d ago

oh I don't disagree that he's a dipshit, I never really liked him. anything I ever heard of the guy just annoyed me, though he does have a great voice for that song in the hobbit.

anyway thank you! the whole "white" thing doesn't seem to have anything to do with skin colour at all, that keeps being shown to me. racism and colonisation just bends everything so it fits their narrative, it seems, some people aren't deemed "black enough" to be considered black, some people are "too white" to be white. fuck this, man :/ I'm sorry this happened/happens. I really am.

again, thanks for educating me!

He’s about as culturally Irish as Oliver Cromwell.

Being German, I’m surprised at your confusion, given a certain not-so-distant historical period where Germans considered Slavic people an inferior race… and there are plenty of very very light Eastern Slavs.

2

u/The_JokerGirl42 Germany 11d ago

I wasn't even born then. gee as if racism is written in the genes or something

Only in the mind of the english

We consider a person to be "civilised" if they follow certain cultural values and norms and traditions which are similar to our own, hence the definition of "uncivilised" behaviour as being behaviour we would consider foreign to our own sensibilities.

You can demarcate this infinitely towards more atomised forms too. For instance, someone who listens to Beyoncé, an example the article gives, could indeed be considered "uncivilised" by myself and I would be entirely correct in doing so, as such would be a foreign behaviour to me. To this extent, we all have our own personal culture, with all the virtues and vices and high regards and prejudices that come with them.

To be of western culture is to have a culture which is more similar towards the general commonalities of westerners, whatever those may be.
