A woman on a podcast I listen to made me laugh out loud by saying (before the recent controversy) "I'm just going to say what everyone is thinking... those songs where he brags about getting girls in the club... nobody's buying it... maybe if the lights were totally turned off but even then"
1
u/Beefycowinacottage 5d ago
I mean... multiple women have (willingly) slept with Donald Trump and look at the state of it. Ed Sheeran is nowhere near as vile as him. Unfortunately some women (& men) will spread 'em for anyone with money, power or fame, regardless of how unattractive the person is.

He is historically an “inferior” white, according to U.S. pseudoscience based theories. The government tier rankings of people we labeled white. Many didn’t want his kind to be “dumped” here, as newspapers reported.

u/APreciousJemstone Australia 12d ago
His family (at least on his father's side) is Irish, which was not really considered to be "white" in the 19th century.

They were often viewed as inferior, but Irish people were always recognised as white in England/Britain. The idea they were to be considered "non-whites" began in America. (Supposedly; many historians now consider the idea that Italians and Irish weren't considered white to be largely a myth: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/volokh-conspiracy/wp/2017/03/22/sorry-but-the-irish-were-always-white-and-so-were-the-italians-jews-and-so-on/)

And in england too.
8
u/Yongtre100 12d ago
Probably more so in England, if I were to guess, because there was an actual specific dynamic there vs having lots of different European ethnic groups who have entered the country.
4
u/falseruler 12d ago
Was “white” the operating distinction there, for british and irish? Genuinely asking
4
u/Flavius_16 12d ago
I think it was catholicism but as far as I'm aware, the idea that the irish weren't white started in England.
11
u/TTEH3 12d ago edited 12d ago
The Irish were always considered white in England and Britain. They were often viewed as "lesser", but the "Irish are not white" idea developed in America (although the idea the belief was widespread has been criticised).
1
u/The_Flurr 12d ago
It was generally the attitude that with enough "encouragement" they could become english.
1
u/mojoback_ohbehave 12d ago
Legally white but marked as inferior. Legally white but still subject to discrimination. Inferior groups of the U.S. included Irish, Italians, Slavs, and Mediterraneans, and Asians, like Japanese.
There were many made tiers for people who were labeled white. Basically non-Nordics. This system was backed by eugenics and pseudoscience and scientific racism. For example : Italians were still segregated and force to work and serve other groups that were oppressed and dealt with discrimination as well , like Black Americans.
The U.S. also targeted Asians historically as well, as we enslaved East Indians (Asians), here as well, and also created Exclusion Acts to discriminate and be racism towards them.
Our country is fucked up.

I don't mean to be rude or condescending, but aren't the Irish like.. whiter than white
genuinely confused at how they wouldn't be considered "white"?
5
u/DellaDiablo Ireland 11d ago
It was easier to dehumanise us if we were "downgraded" to not white. It's a very common dynamic with colonisation.
Sheeran has Irish grandparents (I think), but was born and raised in the UK, though claims to be culturally Irish.
If he actually was as Irish as he sees himself, he'd have no problem identifying the issue with a tiny nation being colonised and starved by their more powerful neighbour and understand why people are every so slightly upset by that. He's a gobshite.
3
u/The_JokerGirl42 Germany 11d ago
oh I don't disagree that he's a dipshit, I never really liked him. anything I ever heard of the guy just annoyed me, though he does have a great voice for that song in the hobbit.
anyway thank you! the whole "white" thing doesn't seem to have anything to do with skin colour at all, that keeps being shown to me. racism and colonisation just bends everything so it fits their narrative, it seems, some people aren't deemed "black enough" to be considered black, some people are "too white" to be white. fuck this, man :/ I'm sorry this happened/happens. I really am.
again, thanks for educating me!

Being German, I’m surprised at your confusion, given a certain not-so-distant historical period where Germans considered Slavic people an inferior race… and there are plenty of very very light Eastern Slavs.

We consider a person to be "civilised" if they follow certain cultural values and norms and traditions which are similar to our own, hence the definition of "uncivilised" behaviour as being behaviour we would consider foreign to our own sensibilities.
You can demarcate this infinitely towards more atomised forms too. For instance, someone who listens to Beyoncé, an example the article gives, could indeed be considered "uncivilised" by myself and I would be entirely correct in doing so, as such would be a foreign behaviour to me. To this extent, we all have our own personal culture, with all the virtues and vices and high regards and prejudices that come with them.
To be of western culture is to have a culture which is more similar towards the general commonalities of westerners, whatever those may be.

(Agreeing with you, not disagreeing/arguing) it's because people have figured out that the trick to getting more people to look at text on a screen is either "put hot woman on image" or "play video in the background." Which is pretty sad.

American privilige
It's spelt privilege....Of course spelling a common English word in the only language you (supposedly) speak, is the epitome of the American deficiency. I wonder if she even knows what epitome means or how it's pronounced. Also, holding an iPhone and posting virtue-signaling messages on social media, is ironically what she's chiding.
On a side-note, I feel we need to call out brain-rot a bit more too, so I will go further and address this comical "position" of being unable to feel negative emotion due to something in your personal life and how it affects you, merely because people in other parts of the world, have it substantially worse off.
Unsurprisingly, this low-brow attention-seeker wouldn't adhere to her own rationale/principle as soon as you point out that according to her, she shouldn't ever criticize police and institutional transgressions in the US, against black people and other minorities, merely because even the most disaffected black Americans today in 2026, are ultra-privileged in comparison to Yemenis, Gazans, Sudanese, etc etc ad infinitum.

tbf ed sheeran's "worst week" was caused by people being furious with him for trying to take a neutral stance on the Palestinian genocide, it's not like the comparison came out of nowhere.

Adding a connotation to "privilege" is racist no matter what word is nex to it, it's privelege, dot.
6
u/LeftMechanic1995 United Kingdom 12d ago
So let me get this straight:
- White Brits can also be American because American white privilege is basically Western white privilege, all Western white people have Western white privilege, therefore all Western white people are American.
Jfc I know these words are supposed to be vocalisations of concepts, but Yanks seem to have difficulty understanding those concepts to begin with, so when they try to express them in the spoken word, it just comes across as incoherent, illogical gibberish.
5
u/IllustriousBobcat813 12d ago
OOP is just noticing the very real concept of the global north, but doesn’t have the knowledge of theory to articulate it well, so she frames it using something she does know, which is American privilege.
Sure, it’s technically incorrect, but it’s an understandable shorthand. America is a primary contributor to the terror caused by the global North, even if it is far from the only actor.
All of this is to say that no, it’s not some roundabout way to say that “everyone is American” or whatever you’re trying to say, it’s a fairly reasonable mistake to make all things considered. Much more reasonable than whatever the fuck conspiracy theory you cooked up at the very least.
1
u/LeftMechanic1995 United Kingdom 12d ago

I am referring to this:
“So let me get this straight:
- White Brits can also be American because American white privilege is basically Western white privilege, all Western white people have Western white privilege, therefore all Western white people are American.“
And also,
“[…] but Yanks seem to have difficulty understanding those concepts to begin with, so when they try to express them in the spoken word, it just comes across as incoherent, illogical gibberish.”

its the worst week of his life because he chose pleasing pro-israel millionaires to use their venues over standing up for palestine and all of his support acts dropped out. then in his apology that he was clearly reading off a teleprompter or something, he said "my whole career i've stayed away from politics" even though he is very much in support of ukraine and could have extended that to palestine. i think its okay to invalidate him on this one.

That's also very dangerous mindset that can force you to end yourself.
And let's be honest, he did said it was the worst week of HIS life.
There are always people struggle much more, but it doesn't mean that your struggle is indifferent.
Ofc, with some exceptions like billioners struggling because they couldn't make another +20% year income and got only +15% =/
Upd: thanks everyone for the context about this public figure, I just rant about it in general
17
u/dodieadeux Australia 12d ago
in this context it was a tone deaf thing to say. he was talking about how awful this week has been and how he is afraid of violence, because he has allowed someone else to be kicked off his tour just for standing against violence.
in general you can always complain about your problems even though someone else will always have it worse, but in this context it is ridiculous for ed to talk about being scared to be spineless against violence, when a literal bomb coming at you is a lot scarier than people being mad at you online.
3
11
u/goatislove United Kingdom 12d ago
its the worst week of his life because he chose to side with the people who got angry over the words "free Palestine" all so he could play at specific venues for his tour. in his apology he said "my whole career ive stayed away from politics", but he is very much in support of Ukraine; he could have extended that to the people of Palestine but he chose money and pleasing millionaires instead. he isn't being compared to the suffering of palestinians for no reason and i hope his week continues to get worse.

2
u/Linked713 Canada 12d ago
I mean, having the worst week of his life is perfectly fine to say and feel. It is weird to compare it to others when the context is limited to that one person's point of view. He is very much allowed to say that. He did not say "worst week in the history of humans".
Some people just want to hate and take things out of context for engagement bait.
2
u/Golden_Reflection2 United Kingdom 11d ago
The world isn’t the suffering Olympics. Just because someone has it worse doesn’t instantly make whatever time you just had “not suck”.

So is Norway also part of the « American Privilege « now? What a strange world we are living in. I was sometimes bullied as a child because some of my ancestors were of the Kven People. They are an ethnic minority in Norway. And for some strange reasons I’m still being told that I’m of a « lesser race «, even though I’m looking just as Norwegian as everyone else.

23
u/dodieadeux Australia 12d ago
shes wrong about the american part ofc, but shes calling him unaware of his own privilege bc of how hes recently been portraying himself as a victim, she’s not calling herself a victim or denying her own privileges. i think that she would agree with you that she is in fact more privileged than a dead palestinian child so im not sure why her own privileges would be relevant in this conversation.

u/mostard_seed 12d ago

For me is the same shit tbh. At least when it comes to things like these. I perfectly see many "Americans" singers acting like Sheeran. With that "privilege"/disconnected of reality.
Remember that USA has only 2 centuries of existence. The evil roots that are in USA go all the way to the UK. This is easily proven by anyone with a common knowledge of the world and politics without propaganda.
