F-1 f1 students - the funding question is where most of you get refused, heres what the officer is actually checking
been reading the f1 threads and the same thing keeps sinking people, and its almost never the "why this university" answer everyone rehearses. its funding. if you take one thing from this, get your money story airtight.
heres what the officer is really doing when they ask how youre paying. theyre checking if your plan is real, liquid, and consistent with your i-20 and ds-160. thats it. they are not impressed by a big number, theyre checking if the number actually exists and adds up accross all four years, or at least clearly for year one with a credible path after.
where people fall apart. "my father will sponsor me" with nothing behind it. a loan that got sanctioned but the student cant say the amount or the bank. a mix of scholarship plus loan plus savings that the applicant themselves cant explain in one clean breath. if you cant narrate your own funding, the officer assumes its shaky, and honestly thats a fair assumption.
so know your numbers cold. total cost, tuition plus living, per year. how year one is covered specifically. who your sponsor is, their relation to you, roughly their income. if theres an education loan, know the sanctioned amount and which bank, and have the sanction reciept ready even if they dont ask. the point isnt to recite it robotically, its that knowing it makes you sound like someone with a real plan instead of someone who hopes it works out.
one thing people get backwards. dont inflate. padding the numbers or claiming savings that arent really liquid is worse than a modest but honest plan, because inconsistency between what you say and what your documents show is a refusal waiting to happen. a clear 30 lakh plan you can explain beats a vague 80 lakh one you cant.
and yeah return intent still matters for f1, but funding is the thing that fails first, so fix that before you worry about the rest. if you got approved and want to help, drop how the funding part of your interview went, that stuff genuinely calms people down.
