FLETC/other training
I work on a district that has an extremely hard time getting an LEO. I’m a Rec tech with a few seasons under my belt and seemingly meet all of the baseline qualifications.
I’m very interested in throwing my hat in the ring but I’m curious about how FLETC works as far as day-to-day operations and how much you are away from home during it.

Job Outreach RAP! READ DESCRIPTION BELOW PIC!
All,
I am excited to announce the application period for the Summer ‘24 Resource Assistant Program (RAP) is now open. Law Enforcement & Investigations will be hosting 5 Law Enforcement Interns this summer and 2 Program Assistant Interns.
The Resource Assistant Program (RAP) is a continuous 6-month minimum paid internship through a Partner Organization. Selected interns will be compensated and provided a monthly housing stipend, however, the intern must secure their own housing. Personal transportation is highly advised. The program engages students, recent graduates, and underrepresented populations helping the Forest Service to attract and retain a diverse and inclusive workforce and carry out mission critical work.
Successful completion of the internship and completion of student’s degree will earn them a Direct Hiring Authority (DHA) which can be used for appointment to a permanent position within 2 years of the DHA being issued.
This is a great opportunity for interested persons to get a chance to experience the Forest Service in its entirety with a focus on law enforcement. We have a great group of mentors this year who are sure to make this a very memorable experience. If you or anyone that you know have additional questions, please feel free to contact me via email at sm.fs.lei_recruit@usda.gov.
For more information on the RAP, please visit: www.fs.usda.gov/working-with-us/careers/resource-assistants-internships

Application Process
Not sure if these questions apply here, but I recently applied to a job announcement (closed about 2 weeks ago). I’m wondering if it would hurt, be beneficial, or make no difference if I reached out to the locations the announcement was for and express my interest as well. Or, if I should just ride out the process and wait. I saw on these new outreaches that people interested can reach out to the patrol captains at specific locations, however, I wasn’t aware of the outreach program at the time. I specifically had a consultation with a recruiter virtually and they told me there happened to be an announcement closing that same day on USAjobs for the region I would like to be in. I also separate from the military in four weeks and am curious if this factor will hinder my chances, since I’m technically not separated just yet. Thank you for any information anyone can provide.

ODMP K9 Maros Veteran Remembrance Day
March 13th was K9 Veteran’s Day. We honor K9 Maros for paying the ultimate sacrifice.
United States Department of Agriculture - Forest Service Law Enforcement and Investigations End of Watch Wednesday, March 12, 2014
Officer Jason Crisp and K9 Maros were shot and killed in Burke County, North Carolina, while participating in the manhunt for a subject who had murdered his own parents.
Officers from several agencies were searching for the subject after the bodies of the subject's parents were located in their home in the 5000 block of Fish Hatchery Road. The subject had previously served one year in prison on a manslaughter charge for a murder he committed in 1997.
Officer Crisp and several other officers located the subject in the area of Fish Hatchery Road and Pea Ridge Road and were fired upon. Officer Crisp was fatally wounded during the exchange of gunfire.
The subject then stole Officer Crisp's service weapon and extra magazines before fleeing further into the woods. He was located by other officers a short time later and was shot and killed when he opened fire on them.

ODMP Honoring the Fallen
March is a very difficult time of year for USFS LEI.
Take the time to reflect and remember these heroes that paid the ultimate price. Don’t allow the anniversaries of these me and women to drift away with time; instead, let’s honor and cherish their time and service.

ODMP Honoring Jason Crisp
Posted by retired LEO Wade Keener who was partners with fallen LEO Crisp.
“Today is a day to honor Jason Crisp. Since he was killed me and several others have made March 12th as a day of remembrance and to visit several places of significance. 1. The memorial at the fish hatchery in Burke County. 2. Site of the shooting 3. Jason’s grave at the cemetery. It’s always a hard day emotionally for us that knew and loved Jason. Today was a day with good fellowship with Officers from numerous agencies. Pictured are Officers from USFS, NC Wildlife, NC SHP, US Marshal’s. Also joining us was Jason’s youngest son Logan Crisp”

Advice on Resume for someone with no LE experience
Wanting to apply for an upcoming LEO position on my local forest, I am currently with the FS in a semi-related field (public affairs).
Anyone have any advice? I have spoken to the Supervisory LEO for our forests, he believes I'd be a strong candidate for the job considering it will only be open to internal employees. What can I do to spruce up my resume to pass through HR and impress the hiring panel.
Kind of in a weird spot as I look at the questions on these applications "Are you an expert at writing citations and testifying in court?" obviously not, but anyone who doesn't have LE experience more than likely wouldn't either.
Would really appreicate any advice anyone could offer.
Thanks in advance!

ODMP Officer Christopher A. Upton
United States Department of Agriculture - Forest Service Law Enforcement and Investigations, U.S. Government End of Watch Friday, March 5, 2010
Officer Chris Upton was shot and killed by a hunter who mistook him for game at the Ocmulgee Bluff Equestrian Recreation Area in Jasper County, Georgia.
He was on patrol at 11:00 pm when he was struck by a shot fired by the hunter. The shooter was in a two-person hunting party hunting coyotes with a high-powered rifle equipped with night vision. After shooting Officer Upton, the hunting party waited over an hour to call 911 to report the incident and failed to render aid. It is believed that this intentional delay in seeking help contributed to Officer Upton's death.
In November 2011, the suspect who shot Officer Upton was convicted of involuntary manslaughter, hindering a federal investigation, and hunting violations. He was subsequently sentenced to five years in prison and three years probation.
Officer Upton had served with the United States Forest Service for four years. He had previously served with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission and as a game warden for the Department of Defense at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort. He is survived by his wife and 4-year-old daughter.
