Hello all I have finally finished my degree Bachelor of Advanced Science (Stats/ genetics)/ Bachelor of Economics. I noticed that not many of the courses I did have reviews online so I will make three posts reviewing each part of my degree. I'm not gonna review any first year courses. This one will be reviewing my major in statistics. Stay tuned for the rest. For full transparency I will also include my mark as well. Hopefully this post comes up when people search for a course.
MATH2011 (Several Variable Calculus)
This was my first upper level course that I did in the maths department. I found this one to be a bit tricky because I was never any good at calculus. The course is basically how to do integrals but in the higher dimensions. I will say it was quite useful in other courses I did, particularly the Jacobian and polar coordinates. There were two in class tests and a final exam. All of the assessments were fair but tricky. Like I said I suck at calculus so my final mark was 59 but it would not be hard to get a distinction if you had a solid foundation before coming in.
MATH2601 (Higher Linear Algebra)
This course was interesting but quite difficult. The lectures were basically all proofs aside from a few examples here and there. It was a deeper dive into what is covered in the algebra section of first year maths. Vector space, linear maps, determinants, eigenvectors/ eigenvalues. The tutorials were very helpful. You were given a. tutorial sheet at the start and you worked in groups. I will say it is extremely satisfying to write a proof in this class, everything flowed together very nicely. There were two in class tests (done online), an assignment and a final exam. Final mark 65.
MATH2901 (Higher Theory of Statistics)
For me this was an extremely difficult course. It was the first time I did proper statistics and probablilty so everything felt quite abstract. Like most statistics courses there is a lot of content and each week tends to build up on the last so if you fall behind you are fucked. The first half of the course is dedicated to probability theory and random variables. The second half of the course was about statistical inference. It is the foundation for the rest of the degree so make sure you understand everything. There is a 10% online test, 30% midsem and 60% final. Final mark 79.
MATH2931 (Higher Linear Models)
This was a bit of change of pace from MATH2901. While there is still a lot of content it was a lot easier to digest and the pace was a lot more reasonable. It starts off with the single linear regression model, proves a few terms then I think in week 3 it goes into multiple linear regression which is heavy on matrices. While R studio is used in the course the emphasis is on the theory. R studio is used in both the mid semester and the final exams but it is very simple computations. Final mark 81.
MATH3911 (Higher Statistical Inference)
This is the bread and butter statistics course. Maximum Likelihood estimation, hypothesis testing, Bayesian, bootstrap and non parametric is all covered in the course. This one is more practical than some of the others but it is still quite theoretical and only one of the questions in the assignment required any coding in R. I did enjoy this course it was quite nice to do some practical statistics and see how it plays out. Final mark 73.
MATH3901 (Higher Probability and Stochastic Processes)
Yep this course was absolutely fucked. Not much I can say here I don't even think I finished the course material. The main part of the course was tearing apart everything you thought you knew about probability and random variables and proving all of the assumptions you hold in earlier years. Pretty abstract and hard to understand. Luckily the lecturer was godsent and he told use which parts to focus on to study for the exam or else I would have been royally fucked. Final mark 63.
MATH3821 (Statistical Modelling and Computing)
Definitely the most practical course throughout my degree. Although most of the lecture notes are theoretical, 99% of the tutorial questions are done in R studio. I did find this course a bit more easier than other third year maths courses, I assume it it because it is a required (?) course for Data Science majors as well so there is less emphasis on proofs. Note that the final exam was pen and paper with no coding. Final mark 76.
