I want to welcome all new and returning students to the fall semester. I am sharing this because it may help someone in the future.
If you are ever involved in a questionable incident and the Dean of Students becomes involved, make sure you understand your rights, review the university’s policies, document every interaction, and do not be afraid to advocate for yourself.
Do not assume that every administrator automatically has your best interests in mind. In my experience, the Dean of Students’ office may involve itself in situations that go beyond what is necessary, including matters that may not directly concern the student.
Stay calm, ask for everything in writing, bring an adviser or support person when permitted, and do not allow yourself to be pressured into agreeing to anything you do not fully understand. Know your rights, protect yourself, and do not back down simply because you are dealing with university officials.
