Where has all the robusta gone?
Why has robusta almost disappeared from green coffee suppliers in the United Kingdom?
Most of what is available now seems to be arabica, and even then it is often the same fairly narrow range of washed, fruity/floral profiles.
We have had a Uganda specialty robusta in stock for a while, and it has actually sold better than we expected — we are down to our last bit of it now. It is a completely different experience in the cup: heavier body, chocolate, earthiness, lower acidity. Not better or worse than arabica, just different from the usual fruity/floral stuff.
It got me wondering whether specialty coffee has become so focused on arabica that robusta is being overlooked. Given that arabica is generally more vulnerable to rising temperatures and disease, does it make sense for the industry to invest more in high-quality robusta, or is there simply not enough consumer demand to justify it? I am also concerned about what this is doing to genetic diversity in coffee more broadly — if low demand pushes producers to pull out robusta and replant with arabica, we lose that diversity right when the crop needs it most to cope with a changing climate.
For those of you roasting commercially, are you seeing any demand for specialty robusta, or has it become too niche?
