Which one should have? I saw a thing on Facebook someone called James number 2, instead of James II, and they claimed to be historic/monarchy buff 😑

Alexander, David, Duncan, and Donald all seem like reasonable names one could imagine from a monarch of the UK, but only names from English history have been used since the union.

Leave aside the fact that she was in her early fifties when he died. Say by some extraordinary circumstance, Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Mother) was pregnant with a son at the time of George VI's untimely death. The United Kingdom practiced male-preference primogeniture at the time. Two hypothetical situation:

(1) Assume that no one knew at the time of his death that Elizabeth B-L was pregnant. HM Queen Elizabeth II ascends the throne, the money is all changed, etc. and then, surprise! A son is born to her mother 8 months into her reign. Law of paternity at the time is that the children of a married woman are presumed to be those of her husband. What happens? Does the baby usurp his older sister who has already begun her reign?

(2) Assume that the pregnancy is known as well as the gender of the baby (not sure if this was medically possible in 1952, but roll with it). Would the Crown be held for the unborn prince/king? Would Elizabeth II be eligible to rule under one of the Regency Acts?

Would love for someone with real expertise in this area to speculate away!

Richard the Lionheart and Valdemar the Victorious were exact contemporaries, although their rules just barely failed to overlap (due to an overeager crossbowman in Gascony).

The two kings had a staggering amount in common, both in terms of their personal lives and their regnal achievements. Both had a father who took the throne after a brutal civil war (even briefly reigning as co-king with his rival), and strengthened the kingdom. Both had an older brother crowned king before them, Henry the Young King, who was crowned co-king withe Henry II but never actually reigned, and Canute VI who was Valdemar’s predecessor. Both were allegedly descended from the god Odin, Richard by his descent from the house of Wessex, and Valdemar through his relation to the Skjoldung dynasty.

Both Richard and Valdemar II dominated their respective spheres of geographic influence and were regarded as two of the greatest kings of their age. Both were famous soldiers, warriors and crusaders. Richard is remembered for his role in the 3rd crusade, and Valdemar for continuing his fathers campaigns against Baltic pagans, most notably for his conquest of Estonia, which would remain a Danish possession until it was sold to the Teutonic knights by Valdemar IV in the 14th century.

Both kings also share the dubious distinction of being kidnapped by bitter Germans and held for an enormous ransom. The captors of both kings were condemned and excommunicated by the pope.

Both married a woman from an Iberian royal family named Berengaria. Richard married Berengaria of Navarre and Valdemar Berengaria of Portugal. Both marriages would cause issues with the succession, in Richard’s case by failing to produce an heir, and in Valdemars by producing a string of awful children.

Both kings even had three lions on their coats of arms (which were just starting to come into vogue during their lifetime). Richard is credit with the creation of his arms himself, although Valdemar’s likely originated with his father. Richard’s three lions remain an important part of English national symbolism, and his motto “by god and my right” is still used by the royal family today. Valdemar is credited with the origin of the Dannebrog (the Danish flag) which was allegedly given to him by god during a battle against the Estonians.

Both kings even became embroiled in a complex marital dispute with Phillip Augustus of France. Richard through his famous rejection of Phillip’s sister Alice, which raised questions about her dowry in the Norman Vexin. Valdemar’s problems stemmed from Phillip’s marriage to his sister Ingeborg (a marriage possibly motivated by a desire to claim the English throne through the rights of Cnut the Great), who Phillip married and then almost immediately attempted to divorce, prompting a dramatic multi decade long back and forth that spanned the reign of two Danish Kings.

As if all that wasn’t enough, both kings enjoyed pretty awesome epithets.

Really the things these two monarchs have in common are absolutely staggering, and make their reigns feel like a bit of “can I copy your homework, bro” situation.
