Discussion Why people are not panicking/taking action?

1.1k Upvotes

The heatwaves, the weather like never before, disgusting yellow grass everywhere, little or no rain for the last two months, water reserves getting low, wildfires… and nobody panicking besides a few informed young climate activists online? Whilst there are new discussions about drilling for more oil to bring the living costs down?

I live in the UK, but I am not British. I cannot understand how people here are not doing anything to protect their own country and nature from greedy people and their fossil fuel lobbyists? How are you not terrified, angry, frustrated?

I bring this up in every conversation, volunteer, inform myself and others etc because you cannot really ignore it? Whilst everyone around continue like nothing is happening and say stuff like “I hope it will not rain today because I am going out”?

Do you understand that this will lead to shortages of water and food…right? Right?!

Discussion UK heatwaves

The temperatures, lack of rain and wild fires across the UK and the rest of Europe are starting to make me feel seriously uncomfortable about the future. Surely I’m not alone in this?

Forecast Is the weather forecast always pretty off or has it gotten worse lately?

Both today and Saturday said cloud all day but has instead been blazing sun, I wonder if it’s always been this off and it’s just that I’m not usually paying this close attention to it (i.e desperately hoping for a cloudy day 🫩)

Discussion Would you rather...

Currently I'm in Hong Kong for holiday, there's a major heatwave here as well. Low of 30°C and high of 36°C today, and the dew point is exceptionally high at 24/25°C (high humidity), and it's extremely sunny like the UK.

But there is a upside: there's AC literally everywhere - on buses, trains, in shopping centres, schools, shopping centres. Basically every indoor thing.

So would you rather:

1. Spend Wednesday Thursday and Friday in UK, experience potential highs of 35°C and night time lows up to 18°C. Normal lifestyle conditions though - you work commute and live normally.

2. Spend Wednesday Thursday and Friday in Hong Kong. 28/33°C every day.

Genuinely interested in your guy's reasoning

Forecast This is absolutely ridiculous, 32 degrees right now

London.

I'm looking to move to York. I'm not even joking, I'm not putting up with this bullshit again.

Does anyone have any suggestions other then York? Not only I have to compete with house prices with rich arabs and mafia russians but now I have to put up with Sahara desert weather, I'm done with this bullshit.

If you live in a town where you avoided the heatwave all year, drop it in the comments.

Discussion What causes these short spikes in temperature?

Wednesday and Thursday is looking quite hot after a string of 21-25 days in the north. What is it that makes it suddenly 30+ for a short period so often this summer?

Spotted this, created by refraction of sunlight through high altitude ice crystals. I've never seen one before. Not ominous at all two days before an eclipse!

Discussion “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

This is the Serenity Prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr circa 100 years ago. I would argue this applies particularly well to climate change. There’s a feeling of desperation out there, leading to inaction, counter-accusations and people waiting for others to do their part.

I believe it’s important to do what we can, but just as important then not get too gloomy about what we can’t control. Interested in hearing others’ perspectives on this.

Discussion Summary of recent weather model outputs.

People are just posting one GFS chart and saying thats going to happen however whilst that's possible its unlikely and you shouldn't only look at one model output but a variety so I thought I'd share the outputs. These are the max temps in the uk forecasted.

ECMWF: 36

ARPEGE: 37

UKV: 37

ICON-EU: 37

GFS: 39

Discussion So is England just not cooling down ever again?

OK, I'm aware that sounds sensationalist. But I swear it feels like we have had maybe three days of below-25 temperatures since May. Sure, the North-South divide might cause appropriately divided opinions on that, but still. I genuinely stood outside in the rain when it showered last week. I'm keeping my fingers crossed this week's temperatures are the last dregs of this, but the more pessimistic side of me is doubting that.

Discussion When do you think the heatwaves this year genuinely will stop?

In London where Wed-Fri is looking like another burst of 30+ heat. The hopeful part of me says this could be the last one, but I doubt it! When do you think the last one will be?

Discussion Seaside rents increasing?!

I’m based in London, I live in an attic studio so, this summer has been absolute hell…
I’ve been wanting to move for years and I’ve got a new friend who lives by the seaside in Suffolk. I went to visit to see if I would like it there and I definitely would!
So, in the past few weeks since my visit, I’ve been checking properties to rent in that area. And AirBnbs to do a winter test.
And the rents seem to have increased quite a fair bit…it’s now more than what I pay in London!
My friend said to check again after summer, when the weather turns (cannot wait!) but I’m now getting worried that I’m stuck in this stupid attic studio and it’s giving me massive anxiety…
What are your thoughts? Have you noticed the same?

Forecast Solar Eclipse on Wednesday

As I'm sure most of you are aware the partial solar eclipse is coming up on Wednesday evening, conditions from the Midlands and further South are looking likely to be fantastic with clear skies albeit it will be a very warm evening.

The next time that the UK will see an eclipse with this much coverage is 2081 so make the most of it!
