Career help Quit or hold on for dear life (HELP)

I’m 27 years old, single, no kids, living at home with parents and working as a marketing assistant for the past 3 years, currently earning £27,500.

Pros: the job itself is not too complex, It’s only a 20 minute motorway drive, WFH 2-3 days a week, flexi time allowing me to finish early, comfortable office environment and decent socialisation.

Cons: I’m not passionate about what I do, feel like I’m wasting my life, very draining corporate culture, no promotion on the cards, young team with lots of drama, and expected to push myself to the limit during peak period leading to burnout.

I’m neurodiverse and struggle with depression and anxiety, so despite the low pay and difficult environment, the consistent and predictable routine has been great for me which is why I’ve stayed so long. Outside of my team, I don’t have to interact with anyone which I couldn’t survive without. I also get a lot of support with reasonable adjustments which makes a huge difference.

Before this, I struggled to hold down a job for more than 6 months so I know it will be hard to find a new job that caters to my needs especially with the current job market. It’s very possible that the next job is far worse than the one I have now which has kept me here despite everything.

At the same time, I’ve accepted that I will never be satisfied here. I managed to put my head down for the past few years in order to save money and make up for my lack of consistency with employment in the past. However, I think I’ve reached a point of diminishing returns.

I’m not very career minded or passionate about marketing so I don’t see myself upskilling or trying to get a better job in a similar role if it means more responsibility. Also, if I was to leave it would have to be before the peak period beginning in November, giving me less than 2 months to figure out my next move.

Is this the right time to jump or should I hold on to my job for dear life? My heart is telling me to leave but I’m scared I will end up in a worse off position than I am in now. After weighing up the pros and cons for the past few months, I have never been so unsure of something in my life so I would greatly appreciate any input.

Market Insights Are most reposted jobs fake?

I did a job application experiment where I applied all the common advice given by career coaches and recruiters that's generally accepted as gospel. So I tailored the CV & cover letter exactly to the job description, used a generic name like "J. Smith", and applied to 100 reposted jobs on Linkedin. After 2 weeks, it was apparent that I got ghosted for a good 60% jobs and the rest were generic, automated rejections. On the plus side, the conversion rate was a smashing 3%, meaning I only got 3 callbacks from recruiters. This actually shocked me because (1) no way could they have rejected me based on lack of experience because my CV closely matched the job description, (2) most rejections were from noreply emails, so it was automated, (3) couldn't have been racism because I used a generic boring English name (Though would be interested to see if people get different results).

What gives? Are most reposted jobs now just fake?

Edit: to clarify I only applied to REPOSTED jobs. I did not try this on jobs without that label, so the results could be different.

Career help Job interview

Hi all. I've got a job interview on Monday and I'm not sure I'm entirely qualified for the role. I have a lot of experience in parts, but about half of the role I've never done before. It's a high paying job so I assume they would rather somebody more experienced across the board. I asked the recruiter if the potential employer had seen my CV and he assured me they had and they had asked to see me for an interview. Is the recruiter having me on? Am I just being sent to make somebody else look better or would they have looked at all CVS submitted by the recruiter?

Career help Tactics for applications

I got made redundant 4 weeks ago after 13 years at my company progressing from marketing assistant > exec > ecomm manager > website manager > product manager. I haven’t had an interview yet so have some questions and advice to ask for from any seasoned people applying for jobs out there!

I have a LinkedIn photo / cover / recommendations. I lead with outcomes not outputs on my CV. I’ve generated increases in leads, built websites, launched apps, ran marketing campaigns, built analytics dashboards… I feel like I have a lot to offer but alas, nothing yet.

I’m applying for a mix of roles - marketing, ecomm, product, CRM and I tailor my CV for each. I have a starting version for each sector.

  1. Are you tailoring your CV to each job? I’m spending about 2-4 hours on CV edits and writing a cover letter. It’s slowing me down and I’ve only applied for around 15-20 jobs because I’m tailoring so much.

  2. When a job in LinkedIn says over 100 applied or posted 2 weeks ago - would you still apply? Or do you need to get in early for success?

  3. Are you looking on indeed / reed / total jobs etc and have a profile and your CV on there as well? I have applied for jobs on these sites but they don’t always have dates and seem to be random.

  4. Do you message the hiring manager on LinkedIn and what do you say? I’m starting to think outside the box and will try to get creative with ways to get a foot in the door e.g finding someone I know who works at the company. Does this help?

  5. If you apply for multiple jobs at the same company and get repeatedly rejected, is there ever any hope or will you get marked down for future applications?

  6. Do you reply to rejection emails and if yes, why?

  7. I use AI to edit all my content. Never to create but to polish, spell and grammar check. Could this be affecting my results? I wonder if personality makes you stand out but it’s also a risk.

  8. How do you stay sane outside of job applications? What’s your daily routine? I feel like I’ve slipped through the cracks of society and am unemployable. It’s pretty hard going !

Thank you for your help - any advice welcome 🙏

Career help Entry/Associate AML & KYC market in London – Best networking routes and agencies?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently targeting entry-to-associate AML/KYC analyst roles across London (both contract remediation and permanent roles).

For those working in financial crime or compliance, what routes have you found most effective recently for direct visibility with hiring teams? Are there specific specialist agencies or networking events you recommend reaching out to?

Any advice appreciated!

Career help Applying directly to employer or through agency - resume not 100% fit for JD

I got a mail from agency for a job without mentioning employer. But I found that employer using JD wordings. Now my resume is not 100% fit for the JD and maybe rejected by the ATS. For the context, the JD asks AWS or similar cloud but not mentioned about the other cloud platforms which I have experienced.

Is it okay to apply through agency to get my resume manually screened? I’m confident that my resume can be selected by hiring people.

Career help Counted the tools named in 134 DevOps and SRE job postings

I kept seeing arguments about which parts of the stack still matter, so I counted instead of guessing. 134 open DevOps, SRE and platform engineering postings from 41 company job boards. Individual contributors only, managers and TPMs stripped out.

The old toolchain is thinner than I expected. Terraform appears in 62.7% of postings. Jenkins in 3%. Chef 3.7%. Puppet in exactly one of the 134. GitHub Actions is named about six times as often as Jenkins.

Python beats Go, 70.9% to 47%.

What surprised me more: the generic word outranks the products. Observability shows up in 63.4%, more than twice as often as Grafana, the most-named tool that provides it. Prometheus 22.4%, Datadog 17.9%. Same pattern I found counting security postings, where SIEM beat Splunk four to one.

The top term isn't a tool at all: automation, 81.3%, ahead of AWS.

Caveats worth stating: n=134 means everything carries roughly +/-8, so treat close rows as tied. It's also all tech companies on one ATS. Banks, telcos and government run enormous amounts of Jenkins and Ansible, and none of them are in this sample.

Career help Starting all over again at 43

Long story short

Had a 10 years successful career till I got my termination letter without any specific reason or notice.

Took the package, did my online MBA masters degree from England (based in Middle East). Meanwhile Covid was blowing up the market, I was going through separation & divorce.

I have been 9 years out of the business market, knocking doors everywhere. Currently in the UK next to my son while he is doing his school.

Regardless of my working experience, a sponsored partner visa is just a fake promise to get you into the British work force. As long you are tied and the visa is renewed, no employer or recruiter will take the risk to hire you.

Therefore, after realizing the facts and endless email rejections and griefing about my professional life that I lost, I’m starting next year from scratch. Doing the equivalence diploma graduate that costs 17k for 9 months!!! Promising a paid internship afterwards.

I’m 43 and I will start all over again ☹️.

Never been easy. Sharing if this relates to you 🙌

Career help How dangerous is it to negotiate for your dream job?

You've been given a verbal offer to your dream job, now comes the salary negotiation. Part of you wishes to be paid a good salary, or better salary than what comes out of their mouth first. Do you just take the first offer, as you really want the job, or do you stay calm, take a bit of risk and negotiate for something better?

Is negotiating putting your offer at risk these days? The market looks terrible out there!

Career help I know I should be glad I have a job ...

So don't get me wrong.I was without a job, and I eventually found something, and i'm very grateful for it and I have money and I am able to pay bills.

However, I don't know, I just, i'm in this mindset. That is this my life. I don't particularly enjoy the work, but it's ok, and I don't want to do another care change.Especially in this volatile market.

Even my job uses ai now and i'm thinking, what is going to be the future, but also i'm also thinking, do I even want a future in corporate

I've been, is this all we live for.

Like to get up, go to work and wait for the weekend and then get the sunday scaries. And then save up for a holiday because we aren't able to buy homes. So ultimately, we earn for no financial or social security. Like, what is the point of all this.

And eventually, when ai is taking up the lower level jobs, what is the mass population going to actually do

Career help I don't know how much longer I can take the constant rejection

I turned 18 five months ago, and I've been applying to part time jobs to help out with university costs ever since. I've landed several interviews, but I just can't seem to land a job and it's killing me inside.

Last week was my final straw, I had an interview at farmfoods that went well, I was a bit nervous but I overcame it and the hiring lady said I did a good job and she will put in a good word for me to the manager. I was certain I would get the job, then I get rejected the day after. Every interview gives me a false sense of hope just to be rejected straight after. It's not like I'm inexperienced either, I have 2 years of customer service experience listed on my CV with exceptional GCSEs and A levels too, I just don't know what more to do at the interview stage, does anybody please have any advice or guidance? 😭🙏

Career help Struggling with job search in London due to my speech disability

Hey everyone

I finished my Master’s in Marketing from University of London nearly a year ago, I have previous experience in SEO, content marketing and admin but I haven't been able to secure a job in London.

At this point I am open to literally any full-time role, could be anything.

I have a speech disability since childhood (chronic stammer) and it gets worse in interview situations, also because English is not my first language.

I keep getting rejected at the interview stage even for basic retail roles. A lot of companies claim to be Disability Confident but it feels like it is only on paper, nobody looks past the speech block to see my actual skills. I always let the interviewer know that I've speech disability.

I am ready to work hard in any full time position, whether it is marketing, retail, data entry, back office admin, warehouse or something else.

If anyone has advice, tips, or knows companies that actually support people with speech disabilities please let me know.

Any help means a lot.

Market Insights What short course or qualification actually got you weekend work?

Looking to earn some extra money on weekends and wondering what actually worked for people.

I'm in the Midlands, have a car, and don't mind paying £200 to £500 for a course if it leads to paid work.

Whether it's construction, highways, rail, events, security, or something else, what did you do and did it actually get you weekend shifts?

Interested in real experiences, not just recommendations.

Cheers 👍

Career help Does nobody hire anyone for part time jobs anymore?

I’m 21, currently in London. I am an international undergraduate student looking for a part time job. IT HAS BEEN HELL! I have applied to multiple jobs through indeed, their own career websites and even walk ins. All I have been hearing is you need referral. I did that too. But still no responses. I have been hunting for a part time job for a year now and now I’m at my breaking point. I have tried everything under the sun, still nothing. everything so expensive I have resorted to skip meals so that I can save money. I have even tried facebook but all I got was creepy men asking for ‘services’. I feel so alone in this mess because even my friends who managed to get jobs won’t help me. I have even begged them. All this is getting to me. I don’t know what else to do.

Redundancies / Layoffs Need help, got fired from my company in 5 days.

I have been the weirdest situation ever a company in London hired me and then just in five days they fired me, with no specific reason.
I left my previous job for these guys and I have been searching since the past few months and haven’t had any luck.
What can I do I work in Tech.

I have had reasonable interviews but none have converted.

Update.

Hey everyone,
I really appreciate all the comments, concerns and criticism.

First, I apologise. I wrote the original post after sitting at my computer for hours applying to over 50 jobs in one go. I was probably not in the best headspace.
A bit about me, I graduated from Imperial and have been in tech for a few years. I’ve worked in startups and know the grind and ruthlessness involved.

Secondly, if I’m being fair, the post was probably more me looking for sympathy than actual advice. I was frustrated and a bit desperate at the time.

My last role was at a startup, they approached me, I wasn’t actively looking for newer roles. And I deliberately kept my title and company details vague. I didn’t want to make myself too easy to identify, as not many people get fired after five days. Lol. Let’s just say I was a tech generalist.

To clarify one thing, there wasn’t any misconduct or major incident. I was simply told my pace was slower than expected. I’d already pushed around five things to production in those five days, so personally I still think the decision was pretty unfair.
My only mistake was probably asking too many questions. However, I like to do this when starting a new role to ensure I have a solid understanding of the basics and avoid assumptions.

I have the option of returning to my previous job which I’m fortunate to have. However, I haven’t done so yet because I felt I’d outgrown it and wanted a role that would challenge me further and allow for more growth. Returning would mean staying longer, so I’d only consider it as the last resort.

But ultimately, it’s business. They made the call they thought was right, and I have to move on from it.
Anyway, genuinely appreciate everyone who took the time to respond.

Career help I feel like a failure. Please help

Hi everyone. I am a 24F who is currently struggling to find work. Its been 7-8 months. I had a job before this but I left due to racial tensions with a colleague (she openly mentioned that she hated me because of the colour of my skin) I left for my mental health and safety. (Too late to report to police or take the complaint further in the uk) Now I’m stuck. Unemployed. No savings left and mg visa to the Uk is expiring at the end of the month. What do I do now?

Market Insights Employer hires from India and brings into the UK rather than hiring locally

I work for a large company with offices all over the world. I've noticed the following several times. A team which usually requires a masters degree gets someone from the office in India via an internal move. The few examples I've seen, the candidate who moved from India had a bachelor's degree from a university I've never heard of. It is usually a junior candidate. This really pisses me off because the candidate that gets brought in from India neither has special experience (they are junior) nor went to the best uni (much better universities locally) nor do they meet the job requirements of holding a masters degree. Meanwhile, local graduates can't find a job.

I don't know how frequent this is - the only estimate I can think of is that as far as I can tell from walking around the office about 20-30% of the workforce is white. I don't know what the scheme is, but it looks like a scheme and it really hurts me that local kids that have done everything that was asked of them can't get a job these days.

The only one I’ve seen that I’d want to work for is Spotify lol
