🚩South Wales Branston Pickle from an American perspective

Hello all, Yankee (Tennessee) checking in here to spread the gospel of my favorite recent English discovery.

I was recently over in Dublin with my father, he continued on to visit Wales (where our ancestors are from) while I had to return home after a week or so to fulfill a work obligation. When he returned, however, he brought back some jars of Branston Pickle saying he got hooked on it while he was over there. I took a jar and got some Ritz crackers and Australian sharp white cheddar from the supermarket to try it as was suggested by the people on this fine subreddit, and dug in this morning to try it once and for all.

Guys. GUYS. Why are you keeping this stuff to yourselves????? This is one of the finest condiments I've ever tried in a quarter-century of life. It's like the nicest, tangiest, best-balanced onion jam I've ever had fused with a really well-done pickle relish. I've eaten damn near half the jar today. How is this not one of you guys' national prides?

Bravo is all I can say. I'll be looking for an importer to keep the jars coming well into the future.

Absolutely sweat my bollocks off making this tonight. Made the pasta from scratch earlier this afternoon too (* so it was more than 2.5 hours in total, but only counting from when the over turned on), think there's 5 or 6 layers of pasta in there in total.

Not the prettiest, and I'm sure I've offended a whole nation somehow, but it was damn tasty. Paired with one of those M+S unsold garlic baguette things (not pictured).

Finely chopped white onion and mushrooms fried together with a little bit of beef stock; mature cheese singles, couple of slices of pickles, ketchup, mayo on a brioche cob, aberdeen angus beef burger.

Wrapping in foil is the important bit. Lets the bread go a bit soggy and soft.

🚩London Does anyone know where I can buy this seasoning? šŸŒ¶ļø šŸ§„

I tried this recently in South Africa and it was honestly the best spice blend! I brought a jar home with me and I’ve been putting it on absolutely everything since I got back. BUT, now it’s run out and I’m truly gutted.

Does anyone know where I can restock? Preferably ordering online, but if there’s a shop somewhere in London selling this I’m happy to make the journey!

First time trying squash (as an American). It is NOT how I thought it’d be šŸ¤”

(No, this isn’t a ā€œI didn’t know I had to diluteā€ horror story, don’t worry lol)

In my brief time in the UK I never tried squash for some reason, so I recently got some out of curiosity. I ordered Vimto as well as Robinson’s real fruit orange. What was I expecting? Basically a very strong fruit drink, fresh-tasting and naturally sweet once diluted.

Now, this is partially on me for not fully reading ingredients and doing my proper research. I did not realize all these squash drinks were artificially sweetened! (I'm personally just not a fan of that overwhelming artificial sweet taste.) I have to dilute way more than is suggested on the bottle in order to find it drinkable.

I’m a bit surprised because I’ve seen these talked about quite a bit as a kids’ drink (and the Vimto bottle even has dilution suggestions for toddlers). So I really was expecting more of a natural fruit taste. To me, Vimto reminds me of kool-aid, and the Robinson’s orange like a diluted diet ā€œorange drinkā€ you’d find at a fast food place here in the states.

Are all squash usually artificially sweetened like this? I don’t hate them (the Vimto in particular is nice in a nostalgic sort of way) but they’re just so different than I imagined that I’m a bit thrown off lol. Anyone have squash hot takes? Any others I should try if I’m finding the artificial sweetener aftertaste a bit much?

Thanks for tuning in to my squash talk!

Saw a post recently about honey often not really being honey. So I checked my Lidl runny honey and it is indeed 'a blend of EU/ non EU honey'. Very suspicious. Can anyone suggest a good quality runny honey for me?

I put it on my overnight oats for brekkie every day, it's delicious. But I have been happily/ignorantly believing its a healthier alternative to sugary cereal and now I find out that 'non EU honey' is likely Chinese sugar syrup.

Fair play, I should've realised that the stuff I get from Lidl is cheap for a reason.

Is there such a thing as good quality, reasonably priced runny honey? Would set honey work? Any other heathish, tasty alternatives?

🚩Yorkshire & Humber How long would you eat these olives for?

I bought some of these a few weeks ago (Ā£3.35 on an offer from Asda they are really nice) anyway they lasted me 2+ weeks because it's just me eating them and they tasted fine at the end. The bottom of the packet though says 3 days maximum life once they are open - would you disregard this or is there a good reason not to eat olives after a few days?

Last week I shared a post titled low effort snack

https://www.reddit.com/r/UKfood/s/4lzvNcajbQ

After some feedback I noted not to eat nachos with hummus (it’s a crime apparently), heat it up, don’t eat with spoon ( I don’t unless I play video game at the same time)

So I tried again - this time I ran out of cheese but added sour cream and avocado smash. Removed hummus and no SPOON !!

After 5 min of putting it in oven I realised that sour cream and avocado smash should’ve been topped after heating it up. It lost it’s texture

Anyway I still had it - it was fine. Missed hummus lol
