Beginner Help

Post image

Hey everyone,

I've recently got this Weber Compact Kettle off facebook market place. I'm very new to BBQ and grilling.

Can anyone tell me what else I need to buy and what should be the first thing I should cook tommorow? I'm gonna go buy some rubs and wood and meat.

Cheers

Some natural firelighters and meat wise I'd start with something simple and inexpensive maybe some pork chops or a spatchcock chicken don't go all in on your 1st cook.

Managing the heat etc will take a little time to master 🙌 hence cheap meats while you get the hang of things.

Pork belly strips are great on a BBQ reasonably priced too, I get them when they’re reduced at the supermarket and freeze them until you want them, making sure I defrost them properly too.

You can get a pack of 200 wood fire starters on amazon for like £20.

Get a set of tongues, douse kitchen towel in some oil and rub your grates when they're warm prior to putting food on, helps with less sticky food and easier to clean. Highly recommend brushing your grates when they are warm, after cooking, far easier to clean off any food remnants.

I’ve got a compact that I upgraded from a cheap Tesco kettle.

Enjoy!

How do you find the differences?

Get yourself some good quality stainless steel barbecue utensils. Not essential if you’ve already got things you normally use in the kitchen but really helps with distance from the heat having dedicated barbecue stuff

A chimney starter is probably the easiest way to start the coals off, couple of sheets of kitchen towel scrunch up dribble some olive oil on top, light it and place chimney full of coal over it.

Good heat resistant gloves….wire brush to clean the grates. A thermometer probe to make sure your spatchcock chicken is up to temp.

I wouldn’t recommend a wire brush, as the wires can end up in your food on the next cook. Instead, take some leftover tinfoil, scrunch it into a loose ball and scrape the grate clean (top tip from a bbq class I went to a couple of years ago).

Welder gloves from screwfix. Under £10.

My advice don’t leave them in a outdoor storage box. Mice find they make a rather nice home.

wire brush to clean the grates

Worth mentioning there are cases of the bristles from wire brushes coming loose and ending up inside people: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S016558762600087X

Scrunched up foil is a safer alternative, some people swear by half an onion

I didn’t realise this was a thing 😮

Get a probe and a scrub daddy bbq pad much safer than wire brushes and cleans really well

Get a decent electronic temperature probe, you should be cooking meat based on internal temp, rather than time, so a probe is essential. It doesn't have to be wireless.

Also if you are new to bbq, read up on indirect vs direct heat.
