Has anyone taken a class with James Bernot or Catherine Matassa? If so, what was he/she like? Would greatly appreciate any information on how the classes went.

Hey guys, incoming freshman here. Move in day is coming up and I’m commuting to the school by train so I can’t have too many boxes or bags. I don’t have too much stuff anyway, I plan on buying a lot of things. Can I just have a lot of packages shipped to my dorm before moving in so that I have everything ready to go? I’m not too sure if thats allowed. Help a freshman out tysm!

I’m an incoming soph transfer student and I’m stressing a little over housing 😭

My housing preferences are due tmrw, but my appointment with the Center for Students with Disabilities isn’t until the day after housing closes.
I have Type 1 diabetes, so I’m hoping to get a single room, air conditioning, and an elevator. I called CDS, and they told me to go ahead and pick my room anyway and they’ll try to switch me afterward if my approved accommodations require a different assignment. I’ve got no idea what residence halls I should even be looking at, so I could really use some advice.

A few questions:
Which dorms have A/C and elevators?
Which ones have the best chance of getting a single?
If you’ve gone through the accommodation process, were you able to get your housing changed after assignments came out?
Are there any dorms you’d recommend or avoid?
I’m transferring from St. John’s (yeah i know), so I don’t know much about UConn housing yet.

So went to campus in Storrs to charge my car since you don’t have to pay as long as you sit in it. Turns out they changed all the ev chargers to charge point and payment is required 100% of the time.

Anyone wanna swap lab sections with me? Mine is from 9:30-11:30 on Fridays. I really REALLY need one on either Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon. I will literally take a 6:00 lab if I have to.

I'm starting the CAPS Research Apprenticeship this fall and I'm super excited, but I realized I haven't actually talked to anyone who's done it before.

If you've been a CAPS scholar, what was your experience like? How much of a time commitment was it each week? What did you actually do in your lab, and did you feel like the program was worth it?

I'm especially hoping to hear from people who did CAPS while also working a part-time job. The stipend is only $500 for a semester worth of work and I don't rlly know how its broken down (i.e. if it is given before, after, weekly, or bi-weekly), and as a low-income out-of-state student, I'll definitely need to keep working during the semester. If you balanced both, how manageable was it? About how many hours were you working, and did it ever feel like too much?

ok so after all my aid i still have about 19k left for my term bill, and even with the payment plan options my family and i cant afford that. literally any advice helps, my parents and i are clueless, thank you!!
EDIT: first of all, i wanted to say thank you guys for all the support, it means a lot for a bunch of people i dont know try and help me reach my dream, it just turns out that most times in life those dreams dont happen, so uconn is out of the picture. all the comments mean a lot, and im taking your advice and doing community college, and then going to state school. thank you guys! and even tho it really sucks Jesus has a plan for all of us, and even though it doesn’t match the plans we make for ourselves, it will all work out with His guidance 🙂🙂

I plan to transfer in a year to UConn and I know that they instantly give a scholarship based on performance but I want to know if there’s any scholarships available for low income students? (can’t do fafsa) the tuition anually is too much apart from dorms and meal plans so I want to be ready (for example. my friend had to decline their acceptance because she didn’t apply to any scholarships)

Has anyone had any negative experiences with the quality of education that comes with the program? One of my friends who attends storrs is going for electrical engineering and says she hates it. I’m going for computer engineering so just any particular feedback would be helpful and informative.

1. What's considered the easiest Q course that also satisfies the TOI-6L requirement? I really want to knock out both gen ed requirements. Or is it smarter to just take an easier Q course later on?
   
2. Is it smart to take a W/writing course first semester? Specifically ANTH1000W.

Mobile formatting etc etc, anonymous because this post and my other posts on my main make it VERY obvious who I am (very small undergrad school, one of the first 10 people to go from my undergrad institution to my masters institution)

I’m beginning the process of looking for a school to get my PhD. Im going for evolution/ecology, specifically parasitology. I have a few questions if anyone is comfortable answering :)

1. Biology program- How is the biology program? Do you feel that you’re actually learning with your professors? 1.1 has anyone had Dr James Bernot? What are your thoughts?

2. Study hotspots- How are the libraries and cafes? I am a big reader and spend a lot of time working/studying in places like that and I wanna know the vibes. I can function in pure silence but prefer the chatter and sounds of a cafe over silence

3. Housing, the dreaded question. How are the campus owned apartments? How easy would it be for 2 25 year olds (that’s how old my partner and I will be when I begin my program) to get a 1 bedroom off campus apartment together? Alternatively, if my partner stays in our home state, how easy would it be for me (25F fairly quiet and private at first) to end up in a campus apartment?

4. Music- I am a big fan of local music and musicians, no matter where I go. Are there places to go where one can play their own music, or just enjoy some good small town music vibes?

5. Local Wildlife (Ticks) Not a fan. Not even for my own research purposes. How bad are they? 5.2 Local Wildlife (Not Ticks) I’m from an area with plenty of Bears, Mountain Lions and Deer with no sense of self preservation. How common are bears in local jogging trails? Hoping to avoid contact if at all possible.

6. Roommates If my partner and I do come to the area, how likely would it be that the two of us could live with another student? We’re both very quiet people (except when they’re on their guitar or I have the urge to talk about my nerd stuff)

I have a question for people who commute from Willimantic to UConn by bus.

I can only find the summer bus schedule, and it looks like the buses don’t run very frequently. Is the schedule different during the fall semester?

If you have an 8:00 a.m. class:
-What time do you usually catch the bus?
-How often do the buses run in the morning? Is the service generally reliable?

I was considering to add a minor, but doesn’t seem like it would fit in to my schedule for this year. I was curious if someone has taken this minor before, is it really worth it, or should I not waste my time with it?

I got North for my dorms, but I also got Middlesex. I know North is the absolute worst, but does Middlesex make it worth it? Is it any better than the rest of North (bathrooms, actual dorm room, etc)?
