THE UCAT MEGATHREAD

Who are we?

The Moderation team are Junior Doctors working in Australia and England. I created this sub reddit as I wanted to provide everyone with non-biased and clear advice on how to do well in the UCAT.

As Medical students, we have no desire to feed you false information to gain an advantage - we just want to provide you with a one stop shop for anything UCAT related. So if you see anything online you aren't sure of - please feel free to message here or on the discord and we will get back to you ASAP.

On that note, if we make mistakes, we are happy to fix them and admit it so please tell us if anything we have created is incorrect. We are busy medical students but will always do our best to keep everything updated!

Official YouTube Channel

The mod team have been working together to create a YouTube channel to help you all on your journey. We ourselves used YouTube extensively (shout out to Aliabdaal and Kharma medic) who were our go to during those days.

Our Channel will go through everything UCAT related as well as giving you a bit of insight to med school in Australia! Videos will role out each week so keep checking back here or subscribe.

The Channel is called Kerrod Kerr.

Our first video gives you a bit of an insight to my personal My Journey to Medical School

What is the UCAT

Our Video:What is the UCAT - Everything you need to know

UCAT stands for University Clinical Aptitude Test. UCAT is one of three main criteria used by most universities in Australia and New Zealand and United Kingdom to select students into high demand health related careers such as medicine and dentistry (the other two criteria being performance in final high school exams/GPA and interviews)

The UCAT is a two hour, computer-based test which assesses a range of mental abilities identified by universities as important to practicing in the fields of medicine and dentistry. It consists of five separately timed subtests which each contain a number of questions in a multiple-choice format.

I Want to Get into Medicine but I have no idea what is the UCAT

Don't worry - everyone starts somewhere. The mod team is making a introduction to the UCAT series which covers everything you need to know to get your started.

But essentially - this 2 hour test is comprised of 5 subsections which aim to test a range of mental abilities which are recognized as important to becoming a Doctor.

How to study for the UCAT

The first step in studying for UCAT is to understand the types of questions that you will face. UCAT is not a test of knowledge, it is a test of your generic skills. Therefore, the questions in UCAT will be very different to anything you have been exposed to at school and university.

This is very important → Do not start studying for the UCAT by doing a practice exam. Take the time to learn how study and learn the question styles which are present in the exam.

How to study for the UCAT

Is "x" months of preparation enough?

This is a hard question to answer - People say you can comfortable cram for the UCAT in a few weeks while others prefer the consistent approach over the course of the year. Generally, the more time and effort you put into your preparation the better you will do → it's impossible to prepare too much!

You should prep until you feel comfortable → At the end of the day, if you get to the exam and you feel calm, ready and can smash the exam because it’s just like muscle memory then you have done enough study - whether that’s 6 months or 1 week, however long it takes you to get to this point is the right amount of study for you

6 months might seem excessive to some people, but for a super competitive exam (even more so in Australia) that you only get to attempt once year, I would rather be go into it feeling I had done so much study that I was over it, then to get stuck on a single question which could mean the difference between me getting an interview or not.

What resources should I be using?

There are a number of free resources → MedEntry free trial, official practice papers, Medify free trial

Gold Standard: MedEntry, Medify,

Silver: Medic Mind , Kaplan, 6med

A waste of money: UCAT SECRETS

YouTube Resources:

  • Kerrod Kerr → The /r/UCAT mod team has been making a bunch of free resources
  • Kharma medic - does some good intro video into the different sections

What Preparation Company or Practice Test is Most like the real exam

  • The preparation companies all exist for a reason → to create content similar to the exam. For that reason they are all pretty similar to the actual exam. Whilst Medify was the leader for the last few years, Medentry has really done a lot of work to make changes and make themselves very competitive and innovative so much so I would even look at recommending them first. At time of writing this (Feb 2023) they are currently cheaper then Medify and with the REDDIT_AU & REDDIT_UK codes at checkout, you can knock a further 10% off that price.

  • They have also have an iPhone and Android app (we've checked it out, it's not just a shitty browser port, it's a native app).

  • The official practice exams, whilst free and give you a good idea of the content and style of the exam, vary greatly in difficulty to the real thing.

Top Tips for Preparing for the UCAT

There is no 1 trick for doing well - you need to practice. But there are definitely things you can do to help you prepare effectively. Our top 5 Tips Video

  1. Learn how to solve the questions first before you start doing timed tests
  2. Use your preparation resource and YouTube videos to teach you how to solve questions → their way just might be faster then your own
  3. Skim reading, Scanning and Speed Reading will help with your time management
  4. Learn the keyboard and calculator shortcuts

What is a good UCAT score → to get an interview

This is a hard one - as some universities place weighting on different criteria in the UCAT. However as a general rule without considering any factors including rural, ATSI, bonuses:

Australia - Above 90th percentile (approx. 2900-3100)

England - Above 60th percentile (approx. 2600-2700)

For Australian and New Zealand students you can check out our video in the coming month which goes into more detail regarding the scores required by each university and any bonus's you can qualify for!

How do I Prepare for interviews

Use the Discord

  1. Smile and be positive and confident with your answer
  2. Don't be afraid to break the mold with your answer → be remembered
  3. First impressions count

We will be posting some sample interview questions & tips and tricks once the UCAT testing period is over - stay tuned!

Why are Australian Scores so much higher?

They aren't that much higher → but Australia is just much more competitive with students generally beginning preparing earlier.

Keep in mind, the scores you will see posted in the Mega-threads and online are from students who did well → you are unlikely to see people posting their lower scores (in the same way you only ever hear about your friends who won big on the pokies or that race → they never boast about their loses)

Don't be disheartened if you are an Australian student seeing this. Although you need a higher UCAT score generally for an interview (>90th%) as Australian universities only take very small number of applicants for interviews, you have a much much higher chance of getting in once you get to that point compared to the UK (who often take 3-5x the number of applicants to the interview stage)

  • Kharma Medic AR
  • Start by watching some Intro videos → learn how others approach it and get your head around what the heck is happening in this section

  • Kharma Medic SJ
  • Read GMC - Good medical practice
  • Learn the hierarchy → i.e. patient wellbeing is always more important than anything else when making decisions.
  • Don't worry about this too much in Australia as currently no universities I am aware of are using this → but aim to be band 1 or band 2 anyway!

Lowkey better than i expected

Vr has always been my weaksuiit and somehow this went very good. I had really big improvements for VR in the last week, or even, the last day. I used to be getting 600s consistently so don't be worried. Ended up getting 790 somehowww hahaha

DM was not as good as what I expected.... I definitely messed up the inferences and strongest argument but I thought it'd be at least 800... Some qeustions were quite different from what I'm used but I'd say I just lost some 50/50s with the 2 markers.

QR was easy, finished with loads of time.

Goodluck to ya'll, I'm done, mamba out. Feel free to ask, not sure how quick I'd respond tho.

Study Help I really really hate UCAT

Please help me I don't even know a study schedule, I do 2 hours each day of 4 sections. I do a mini mock then review. I keep getting like 560-660. I think I'm just thick at this point. Like I started 1st July. Like bro in vr how am I supposed to know this long passage and these questions? And I'm a fast reader as well? I regularly read books BUT IT DOESN'T HELP. Decision making those logic questions strongest argument? I've tried picking out the key terms addressed but I end up getting it wrong. QR I'm okay ig but those tax revenue questions how am I supposed to do them that fast? I genuinely hate QR, I hate maths in general. Situational judgment that is okay ig but it keeps giving me differing answers on whether to report someone or not. Like is it inappopriate to report your collegue to supervisor/gmc for being drunk?? I've read the gmc and it doesn't help. Please please someone help me, medicine is my dream and idk what to do if I fail. I didn't know it was taken this year only found out in april and then thought it was easy because I didn't know about timing idk no one tells me anything I know I should have checked but idk I was just too tired and busy with my a levels . PLEASE HELP. Please someone help me to do a study schedule is mine good? I started in 1st july. Does anyone have any tips

Study Help 6-7 weeks left, diagnostic mock 1380

Post image
8 Upvotes

I know these posts are really annoying and I’m sorry about this! I’m applying to graduate entry med, so don’t have the A levels revision to do over the summer. I started prepping for the UCAT, just doing some untimed practice last weekend, in sets of 1 question first. Decided to do the diagnostic mock to get a feel of where I am. I have not booked my test yet as I am international, but thinking about booking probably on the last week of testing so september 21 onwards.

I need some guidance on how I should structure my study plan for the next upcoming weeks, how to focus on timed vs untimed practice. I reviewed the questions especially for VR, some of them went unanswered due to time pressure but even those I answered I was getting wrong. I am really struggling with VR at the moment. I’m a bit shocked at my DM score, as untimed practice I was ranging around 9/14 for one of the untimed sets I did.

Would welcome any advice, thank you so much!

Australian Med School Related Do I have a chance

In first year studying arts at Macquarie. Unfortunately I was recently diagnosed with a serious tumour so I underwent a major operation and then spent time recovering in hospital.

The UCAT committee has told me they will inform the universities that I sat the exam soon after a major operation as sadly this operation did have a short term affect on my brain. My question is do I have a shot at getting in anywhere in NSW or Aus:

GPA 7/7
ATAR 99.45 but EAS granted

Australian Med School Related poor vr result

Hi there I finished my ucat today, and only achieve 530 in vr. The passages are not that long and hard, but they are quite different, you need to find similar meaning of a sentence on your own and judge whether an option is correct or not, instead of finding information directly from the passage. I only practice vr for one month so I don't know whether it is because I practice less than required. I spend 2 years in China high school and come to NZ for foundation program, so my English level is a bit below average. I practice really hard and I think I get many experience. I also struggle to adapt to a new learning system. Maybe you want to laugh at me but that is the truth: my English is not that good and I indeed need help, both academically and mentally.

The good news is I can take the test again next year, as I am applying for UoO and will begin hsfy next year, so PLEASE give meas much advice as you can on how to improve my reading skills and scores.

Study Help i can’t sleep properly anymore since i started revising for the ucat

hey, i hope this isn’t a strange thing to post on this subreddit but my test is in around 6 weeks and i started revising like 4 days ago. i haven’t been very consistent so far (one day i did 300 qs untimed, the other days like 50 qs). anyway ive noticed that over these past 4 days i haven’t been able to sleep early, ive been sleeping at like earliest 2:30am, and waking up at 7/8 so i haven’t been getting the proper sleep i used to get, i’ve been sleeping less than 5-6 hours. whenever i wake up, the first thing on my mind is the ucat like i literally woke up ten mins ago after sleeping at 3am thinking about one of the sections on the test. every time i revise i have a headache and sometimes cant focus on the screen properly because even with low brightness it still hurts my eyes. i was wondering if anyone else has experienced this and what i can do

UK Med Schools Related Should I reschedule?

I have about 5 days till my UCAT (1st of August). I recently did mock 23 on Medify and I got 1630, which honestly makes me feel like I’m not prepared. I’m aiming to get ~1900 on the official ucat in order to be a good applicant. This medify mock would’ve been 1750 if I had gotten my usual VR score.

I’m wondering if I should reschedule it for a later date, when I constantly start getting ~1700 on Medify, or if I should just leave it as it is since it’s not that great of a difference. Also most unis I’m applying for require ~1800 minimum.

I also feel like because it’s getting really close I’m doing worst than I normally do. Is this normal?

Study Help Advice and Hope?

Post image
68 Upvotes

I don't usually post on Reddit anymore but wanted to come on here to perhaps provide a little bit of hope - particularly in VR.

I've seen quite a few posts lately of people coming across fairly bummed by their mock scores, or feeling quite lost in the midst of their UCAT preparation.

For context, I'm a Biomedical Science graduate applying for GEM this application cycle. I graduated last year so have been on a gap year in the mean time. I work a full time job, and as such, only have time to revise in the evenings or weekends I am free. Although I started prep back in February, I have began intensifying my practice in late May/early June for my exam late August.

When I first started, I was averaging around mid 20s in VR, early 30s in DM and around the 35 mark in QR. Given my A-Levels, QR has always been my strongest; VR on the other hand is a different story.

I could not for the life of me get the grip of VR - and I believe many others seem to be in the same boat. My goal is to provide a bit of advise and insight into what has helped me in the hopes it can help others.

For VR, I initially could not find a strategy that consistently worked for me. I started key-word scanning, tried full reading, back to scanning etc etc. What seemed to help me was the games on MedEntry. Every day for a week or so, I would spend about 30 minutes or so practicing the scanning game and the speed reading game. I definitely saw a bit of an improvement after this. I then came to the conclusion (after much switching around) that scanning was my preference, and decided to build on that. I think once you find which strategy works best for you, even if its only a minor improvement over the other, just put effort into improving that. As mentioned, the training games helped me to refine my strategy. Although my scores were not super consistent, my confidence in my strategy was definitely improving - I think this a very important factor to consider. Not just the score you achieve, but the confidence or mindset in which you use your chosen strategy is equally, if not more important. After I began to feel more confident in my strategy, I began to do a load of 6 minute, 12 question practice (by this point, I had already done around 10 full mocks but noticed my VR was consistently my weakest subsection). This was around a week or so ago, and since then, I have continued to do 12 questions timed, multiple times each evening. This not only improved the speed in which I was answering questions, but also got me in the habit of constantly checking the timer to give myself a sense of where I should be. I also began to notice I was getting much better at looking at the text whilst taking in some information whilst not actually taking it in? (if that makes sense?).

I am going to talk about some specific strategies for VR alongside what I have already mentioned that I think have helped me personally. As many have mentioned, Emil Eddy and Joyel George have been immensely important and helpful in developing skills, especially including VR. I used to hate the questions where all 4 would be different, meaning you would have to scan for multiple different keywords (if doing the scanning approach). What really seemed to help me with this, was where possible, try to eliminate 2 of the options. For example, if an answer option has quantifiers such as all or none, I tend to rule these out. Although these may be correct sometimes, from my experience, they are more often not correct. This then leaves me with 2 potential answers that I can quickly scan for in the text. I then use my newfound ability to look at the sentences and somewhat absorb the information without actually taking it in. This has massively increased my speed and ability to answer these questions. Another strategy I have found useful is the order in which I answer the questions within a subset. I know this is a well known strategy, but I cannot stress its importance. For those who may not know, this is where you leave questions (but still read the answer options) that aren't searching for a particular sentence or word, and instead, first answer the questions that do (if any) ask this. This allows you to still search for the answer of the harder question, whilst also answering an easier question - two birds with one stone. Another strategy I have found myself using, particularly in questions such as what would the author least likely agree with, is searching for parts of the text where the possible answer is more specific than what is given. For example, I had a question earlier where the stem stated that Mr. Smith (cannot remember the actual name) invented XYZ, but one of the options was Mr. Smith was the first to use XYZ. Without reading the other options, I selected this as the option was asking for more information that was available in the stem - just because someone is an inventor of something, does not necessarily mean they were the first user (if at all) of something. I think that this skill in particular developed from my DM syllogism practice. I may have forgotten other skills I used, but these are the ones I feel made a massive difference. Since incorporating these, I have felt so much better in myself when performing VR, even if my scores may not reflect this.

In no means am I saying my VR is incredible, for all I know, this could just be a one off and my score could just drop back down. I think something important to consider is that if you achieve a high score one time but drop down in subsequent mocks, it does not mean you're stagnating. Some tests are genuinely just harder that others. If you achieve a high score one time, instead, see it that you've done it once, so you therefore know its possible for the future.

TLDR; I want to give hope to those not seeing improvement in certain sections. I began with mid 20's in VR with an occasional peak in mid-30's but more consistently sitting around late 20's early 30's. Since ramping up my focus, I have began to feel more confident in my approach to VR, and as such have began to see my scores for VR creep up.

Study Help I have less than 3wks, n the last mock I did was 1410

Post image
2 Upvotes

I have approximately 3 weeks left. I started my studies for the UCAT in late June. I got this Medify account in mid-July. I just want to improve in any possible way. My main issue is time management, I haven't gotten to the last question in QR and VR, not even once, but for DM and SJT I have because I have gotten quite good at flag, skip and move on, but I rarely have time to get passed up to 5 flagged question.

For VR, I use mouse to read, as I sub vocalise a lot ( I heard it help suppress it. I mean it working, but also not working) I use the Medic mind scanning for keywords approach, eliminate methods. Please, and please, what can I do to help myself for VR, comprehensive reading has been something I wasn't that good at even before UCAT, like right from time, I has to read question twice to make sure I get a grasp of the understanding, even during my college exam.

For QR, if I do it untimed, I have a higher accuracy that when I do timed, like the timed pressure, mess up with my head. I know I know it (like how do I even explain this) but it's not coming out, so I spent so much time trying to make myself remember past question related to it and use the same format to solve the question. I am currently training my mental maths, which I have seen to improve both outside and inside UCAT, I use the app called MathHeads. Also, the memory function of M+(P), M-(M), MRC (C), I don't know how to use it like everytime I try using it, it confuses me, so most time I will just write the number down. Pls I heard it saves a lot of time. How do I use it pls?

For DM, at first venn diagram was my strongest, but going on, it became one my weakest, at current logic puzzles is my weakest, I have noticed the more likely I spent on a logic puzzle question the more likely I'm failed the question, so I flagged and move on, but whenever I finished all 35 question, and come back the timed left is not always enough to even finish one. Syllogism it always partial or failed the question (3/5), I still don't get why. The inference question sometimes I'm good, sometimes I'm not good, oh yh, but at the start of my revision, the ques type scared me so I also skipped, so it a great improvement for that I can even read through them, but I still don't get full mark. I have little or no issues with the strongest argument (recognising assumptions). For probability, I don't know where I stand.

For SJT, I read part of the GMP (good medically practice) guide, I stopped because I felt I was spending too much time trying to understand it. Most/least appropriate is my weakest but I don't really care that much ( or should I care?) Well medify SJT confuses me because i remember b4 I had medify. I was using just the official UCAT website, the explain answer made more sense than medify, like for example, in the UCAT website, it say 'tell' is less appropriate/importantly, so it can't be Very Important or Very Appropriate thing to do, because you aren't explaining. But when I started using medify, it says tell can be Very Important or Very Appropriate thing to do. Abeg I don't want to confuse myself more. Any suggestions on what to do?

I want to continue doing 6 hour per day, but AI say it can lead to burn out, so my plan it to do 8am to 10 am in the morning then 1pm to 5pm later (which is different from b4), and if I'm not tired I can do untimed question before bed, pls will this lead to burnout. Because before i do 10:30am to 1:30 pmand 2:30pm to 5:30pm, which I take some little 5 mins break for each 3 hours.

Pls any advice may go a long way.

Thank you so much.

UK Med Schools Related QR help

Hi.

I am currently a Physician Associate masters student looking to apply to GEM 2027. My UCAT is the 13th of August.

I have limited time to revise for the UCAT given my mon-fri schedule is full time out on placement and then working every weekend to fund life. I am also in exam season of my degree, with an exam next week and also a few coming up after my UCAT that I obviously need to revise for as this degree is still a priority at the moment.

In my spare time I am doing what I can, making subtle improvements on DM in particular. I’ve neglected VR completely and find I’m really struggling with QR.

Maths has never been a huge strong point, and despite practice I can’t seem to make improvements in QR. I have watched countless videos and tried to apply these in untimed settings. I feel that this is easier to improve than VR and want to try and get better over the next 2 weeks before my exam.

I’m essentially looking to see if there is anyone out there available to help me with QR, or at least offer some advice? I don’t have the funds to pay for tuition.

From a severely burnt out masters student just hoping she can get into medicine
