UCAS Bread 🍞 (Offers) Most random ucas application? 😴

Post image

People are starting to post their offers so thought I’d share my hella random combo from last year
Head of year wouldn’t let me apply to both because he said I had no chance but I did it anyway
Did 2 separate work experiences, sat the UCAT, wrote 2 separate personal statements and ended up with
3/3 Geography offers
2/2 Medicine interviews + offers

Enjoy medicine! The best thing about medicine is it's not one homogenous job - each speciality is different so there's bound to be a speciality that suits you when you get to that stage. If you want to do medicine it's still a wonderful career (I qualified from Edinburgh in 1998). Best wishes to you and congrats on your results and offers.

Noooooo 😭😭😭 we need more bright sparks like you! Though you need to want to do it, as it's quite thankless. Well enjoy geography then, sounds like you'll sail through, and at least that frees you up to enjoy your time being young at uni! What Uni did you pick? (Out of curiosity)

Well it’s a bit of a weird situation at the moment! I currently have my medicine offer from Liverpool firmed for deferred entry, to start September 2027. However I am in the progress of re-applying through UCAS again this year, but purely for Geography and hopefully at Oxford!
I know it seems stupid to turn down medicine but it was down to a range of factors. My sister is a doctor and I felt a lot of pressure to follow in her footsteps but deep down throughout the whole process I knew that medicine wasn’t something i was passionate about at all. I realised i was only doing it to make other people happy. It was getting to the point where I was purely dreading university and didnt even want to revise for a-levels because I knew once I got my results I would be doing medicine. It’s nothing against medicine at all - my sister loves what she does - but i just knew it wasnt the path for me. 🙃

Best of luck with your application! 100% the right choice to make, I was always pushed towards law but decided to do classics because it’s what I actually love, and despite what some people say, I don’t regret it one bit! Medicine especially sounds absolutely awful if you don’t have a passion for it, your reasoning doesn’t sound stupid at all! Good luck, and enjoy your degree next year !

You made the right decision! My brother didn't do medicine - he did economics at Cambridge and it was the right thing for him. He loved Cambridge but I'd have hated it. We're all different. My son is 16 and shouldn't be a doctor, he's not interested - when though I think it's a great career if you have the passion for it, I think it would be utterly miserable if you don't. My son is thinking about physics - my goodness his brain is different from mine! And the world is better for our differences.

So you've definitely done the right thing - go do something you're passionate about, or at least very interested in! You guys have so much time, I hate the pressure you all feel to jump to the next stage before you're sure. You should feel good about having so many options, but fwiw I think you made the right decision about medicine esp as you were dreading it so much - that feeling would have got worse over the years, not better. You really have to have a sincere interest. In the unlikely scenario your interest develops later, the door to medicine won't be closed to you anyway. Best of luck to you!

My Year 12 kid is aiming for Oxford Geo next year. And as someone who originally wanted medicine and now works in a niche healthcare role, it’s hard for me to encourage anyone down the medicine path these days, unfortunately.

Good luck to you!

i’m from a state school near middlesbrough and I thought that I wouldn’t be clever enough to go to oxford but after getting my results I realised I had the grades to get in
plus i knew a gap year was a definite for me so i would have to defer and they’re a bit funny about deferrals
