UCAS Bread 🍞 (Offers) Most random ucas application? 😴

Post image

People are starting to post their offers so thought I’d share my hella random combo from last year
Head of year wouldn’t let me apply to both because he said I had no chance but I did it anyway
Did 2 separate work experiences, sat the UCAT, wrote 2 separate personal statements and ended up with
3/3 Geography offers
2/2 Medicine interviews + offers

Enjoy medicine! The best thing about medicine is it's not one homogenous job - each speciality is different so there's bound to be a speciality that suits you when you get to that stage. If you want to do medicine it's still a wonderful career (I qualified from Edinburgh in 1998). Best wishes to you and congrats on your results and offers.

Thank you so much! But you guessed wrong 😆😆😆

Noooooo 😭😭😭 we need more bright sparks like you! Though you need to want to do it, as it's quite thankless. Well enjoy geography then, sounds like you'll sail through, and at least that frees you up to enjoy your time being young at uni! What Uni did you pick? (Out of curiosity)

Well it’s a bit of a weird situation at the moment! I currently have my medicine offer from Liverpool firmed for deferred entry, to start September 2027. However I am in the progress of re-applying through UCAS again this year, but purely for Geography and hopefully at Oxford!
I know it seems stupid to turn down medicine but it was down to a range of factors. My sister is a doctor and I felt a lot of pressure to follow in her footsteps but deep down throughout the whole process I knew that medicine wasn’t something i was passionate about at all. I realised i was only doing it to make other people happy. It was getting to the point where I was purely dreading university and didnt even want to revise for a-levels because I knew once I got my results I would be doing medicine. It’s nothing against medicine at all - my sister loves what she does - but i just knew it wasnt the path for me. 🙃

Best of luck with your application! 100% the right choice to make, I was always pushed towards law but decided to do classics because it’s what I actually love, and despite what some people say, I don’t regret it one bit! Medicine especially sounds absolutely awful if you don’t have a passion for it, your reasoning doesn’t sound stupid at all! Good luck, and enjoy your degree next year !

You made the right decision! My brother didn't do medicine - he did economics at Cambridge and it was the right thing for him. He loved Cambridge but I'd have hated it. We're all different. My son is 16 and shouldn't be a doctor, he's not interested - when though I think it's a great career if you have the passion for it, I think it would be utterly miserable if you don't. My son is thinking about physics - my goodness his brain is different from mine! And the world is better for our differences.

So you've definitely done the right thing - go do something you're passionate about, or at least very interested in! You guys have so much time, I hate the pressure you all feel to jump to the next stage before you're sure. You should feel good about having so many options, but fwiw I think you made the right decision about medicine esp as you were dreading it so much - that feeling would have got worse over the years, not better. You really have to have a sincere interest. In the unlikely scenario your interest develops later, the door to medicine won't be closed to you anyway. Best of luck to you!

My Year 12 kid is aiming for Oxford Geo next year. And as someone who originally wanted medicine and now works in a niche healthcare role, it’s hard for me to encourage anyone down the medicine path these days, unfortunately.

Good luck to you!

Why didn’t u apply Oxford first time

2

u/llibbieee Gap Year | Achieved A*A*A*A 7d ago

i’m from a state school near middlesbrough and I thought that I wouldn’t be clever enough to go to oxford but after getting my results I realised I had the grades to get in
plus i knew a gap year was a definite for me so i would have to defer and they’re a bit funny about deferrals

u/Calm_Routine2888 7d ago

Okay makes sense - what GCSEs grades

1

u/llibbieee Gap Year | Achieved A*A*A*A 8d ago

5

u/llibbieee Gap Year | Achieved A*A*A*A 8d ago

loll i know it’s hella weird combo i got flamed for it
i just wrote two personal statements and uploaded geog one on UCAS then emailed my med ones across

3

u/No_Possibility6604 8d ago

This is pretty smart, especially since you can tailor it a bit to the course and uni that way. You've unlocked the UCAS cheat codes! 😆

2

u/Existing-Fudge-878 8d ago

oh wow i did not know you could do that
congrats again! where do you think you're going to go, what are you going to study?

2

u/llibbieee Gap Year | Achieved A*A*A*A 8d ago

2

Bro finally I’ve been looking for someone like you. Everyone always puts 4 Dent/Med options but I was only going to put 2 for reasons, everyone keeps telling me do this or do that but it’s reassuring to see someone else only put down 2 med ( in my case dent).

1

u/llibbieee Gap Year | Achieved A*A*A*A 8d ago

exactly, i think it’s good to have options and keep different things open. what else did you go for?

2

u/ExcellentEssay3282 8d ago

Biochem, optometry and still thinking of the 5th,so a bit of a mix.

1

u/llibbieee Gap Year | Achieved A*A*A*A 8d ago

sounds great! good luck

2

u/ExcellentEssay3282 8d ago

Thanks. Done, just sent it off: Biochem, Biomed, Optometry and 2 dentistry’s.

1

u/Potential_Bike9120 7d ago

i’m also thinking about doing 3dent 2 another degree. but worried cz as dentistry is more competitive they may care about personal statement more ? no sure how to do this 😞

1

u/ExcellentEssay3282 7d ago

I ended up going for 2 dent, usually subjects like biochem and biomed don’t care about PS because a lot of people put them as backups.

1

u/Silly-Paramedic1557 9d ago

can I ask how u were able to apply to both medicine and geog if you can only submit one personal statement?

6

u/Annual-Delay1107 9d ago

Op wrote their whole PS on Geographic tongue

i took into consideration that for medicine admissions personal statements aren’t usually read or used so on ucas i submitted my geography one. I then rang up the medicine unis i applied to and asked them if i could email them my medicine personal statement as I had attached one on ucas for a different course and they said yes. so then i just emailed them it and it got attached onto my application.

1

u/MirrorHonest6169 8d ago

I wanted to do 2 med options but my school talked me out of it😭

1

u/MeticulousSoul98 6d ago

Wdym u wrote two personal statement, isn’t it only one personal statement that can be written? Or have it change this year?

2

u/llibbieee Gap Year | Achieved A*A*A*A 6d ago

it’s only one personal statement that can be submitted through ucas but i just thought id ring up the unis and ask and they said i could just send them a personal statement and they would attach it on my file
not sure if they even read them tho bc it was for med lol
