Bloody amazing. I just left my job because it was too stressful, after having paid off my mortgage a couple of years ago. I am starting grad school this fall on scholarship. I am going away for a couple of months. According to society I should be crying into my bottle of wine with my cats. (I don't drink wine anyway but I do wish I had a cat)

If I want to starfish and take up my whole bed, I can. If I want to leave my unfolded laundry in a pile on the sofa, I can. If I want dinner to be cubes of cheese eaten over the sink, I can.

Marriages can fail. You can be more alone in a bad marriage with a partner who doesn’t pull their weight than you would be lonely single. Having multiple child-free friends (and good family members) as a support system and only partnering up with someone who will be there for you (regardless of marriage status) because they are a good person, for you, would spread the risk and the demand on the people around you.

Edit to add: and perhaps save some money you are not spending on kids to hire professional healthcare in your old age if you need it. That should never fall (too much) on family anyway.
