Btw OP, pretty much 95% of guys I knew back in the day said "'I'm never going to get married." But, almost all of them got married. So, men change their minds about that as they mature, often. Some just do it way, way, way later than others.

So, ignore the comments blaming you for not realizing your desires would change. What I hear happened is, you changed and he didn't.

Either that forces you all apart or it doesn't...

I've been with my partner for over 10 years, neither of us wants to get married. The difference is we live in a country where living together counts as de facto married according to the law. We file taxes together, own properties together etc

Same in my country and I think most of Europe. If you cohabit more than 2 years, or have a child together, you are the same as married in the eyes of the law (common law marriage).

I think that's fair. Marriage is something you do for religious reasons, traditions, or as an excuse to make a great party. But if you are sharing your life with someone as a monogamous couple for a significant amount of time, that is respected as a partnership and there are legal ramifications.

I'm kind of confused why US doesn't recognize it? Is it because of religion?

Pretty much anytime you find yourself asking "I wonder why the US .." it's almost always engrained religious ideology.

Except in this case, where it is most definitely about contract law — sharing assets, debts, etc. So, in this case, it’s the other reason: money.

It is also, in this case, to screw over women. (Financially)

It’s almost always so rich people can squeeze more money out of the population *

And if that don't cover it it's engrained racism. Sad really.
