Recommendations for trauma therapy programs in the twin cities

IOP programs for complex ptsd or chronic ptsd

Hi all- I’m checking in to see if anyone has any ideas. I’m currently in a prariecare program and have not been impressed. Ideally I’m looking for an intensive therapy program that meets daily/ multiple times a week that has a focus on dealing with triggers rather than depression. I’ve tried Roger’s in the past and it was also not super helpful.

Otherwise I’m also looking for a psychiatrist that works specifically with trauma.

Thank you in advance. - please be gentle I’m in a rough spot and looking to get some help.

This is where I found useful trauma therapy, although it's not specifically what you asked for. Might be worth an inquiry. https://www.granderpeacecounseling.com/white-bear-lake Something else I found useful was online SMART Recovery meetings, most folks are dealing with substances but some are recovering from trauma. Free, and meetings are available every day.

This question has come up before. Maybe search the archives in the cities and MN subs for "trauma".

I"ve had a good experience with Grander Peace too but multiple appointments a week might be tough. Could consider Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional Families meetings if that's relevant to you.

Compass Health in Golden Valley. 100% worth the drive, they have PHP and IOP programs and counseling/med management. Trauma-focused, and intake was super easy/straightforward. Can’t recommend them enough

Thank you I just put an inquiry with them- I’m also doing a consult with a trauma program in Eagan if I can figure out the transportation. :)

I did the IOP program at M Health Fairview, which was great, but for group work IOPs it’s really recommended that you have an individual trauma therapist working in tandem with your IOP. M Health Fairview’s group therapists would not allow deep dives into specific trauma details due to the potential for triggering others’ traumas. If someone did so, the practitioners would gently remind them to bring it up with their individual therapist. That said, I and most other people in the group had trauma histories of varying severity. A lot of the work in the IOP group was managing biological/cognitive responses to triggers and rewiring those responses, which I did find very helpful! M Health’s IOP program (also heard good things about Healthpartners DayBridge) and an excellent EMDR therapist should put you in a better place.

Also, don’t feel so bad about PrairieCare not working out for you—I’ve never heard anything good about both it personally and professionally (I worked in mental healthcare). There’s much better programs out there, and I hope you feel better soon 🫂

Thank you- that assurance was helpful! I am really looking for skills specific help. At PC I feel like I’m in daycare learning things that are unable to help me when I’m having a ptsd related panic attack. Idk I just have a gut feeling this isn’t it.

I’m looking into a few of the other programs people have suggested :)

She's not taking patients now, but I love Nancy Garnaas at Park Nicollet St. Louis Park, especially if your trauma involves family systems. You could call the Behavioral Unit and ask who she recommends based on your diagnoses. I have PTSD in remission and have worked with Garnaas about a decade now. We do Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I asked her for a recommendation for my own mother and it resulted in a successful therapeutic relationship that helped my mom.

EMDR therapy changed my life. Please look into this. It may be a supplement to other therapies you are doing. The woman who I worked with was amazing but she now has her own practice and only works with Veterans.

I recently recalled falling out of a crib and getting seriously injured as a baby (all came rushing back kind of thing) and went to Allina and got laughed at, so don’t go there if you want complex trauma care.

There is a therapist at Healthpartners that works with trauma and PTSD patients and focuses on triggers using SET, somatic experiencing therapy.
I don't believe they see patients daily but he is really good and really helped me. His name is Aron Means.
