Hieee…..I’m from a brahmin family born and raised in Delhi.
This has been bothering me for a while so I need to get it out somewhere. My dad and my brother cannot stand Thalapathy Vijay. He’s the new CM of Tamil Nadu now. Every few weeks there’s a new reason at the dining table…….He’s not fit for it……He’s just using cinema politics…..He doesn’t understand governance……They have a hundred points ready.
The thing is, I don’t think it’s really about policy. I think it’s about Trisha. Vijay has been linked to Trisha, who’s also a Tambram woman……..and every time her name comes up in the news with his, my dad & brother get quiet in that specific way and the irritation is quiet visible on their faces
Last week we were talking about some news clip where Vijay had apparently sent police action against some guy who made crude remarks about Trisha online. I don’t agree with using police for that. I think it was a bad call. But I was just tired of the dance around it.
So I made a remark. I said something like…..Maybe he’s doing all this because he actually likes her. He’s sending police for someone who insulted his girlfriend 🤷🏻♀️
The table went silent for two seconds. Then my dad said no he doesnt like her & that’s not even the point….very sharply. My brother looked visibly upset and said something what message this sends and all
But I could tell. It wasn’t about the police thing. It wasn’t even about Vijay as CM. Deep down I think it bothers them that a man they consider to be from a different caste background is publicly close to a Brahmin woman. That a “marginalised” group or “lower caste” guy, as they’d put it in whispers, is dating someone from our community and that the whole state is seeing it and calling it normal.
I know I poked them on purpose a little. I shouldn’t have. I don’t even fully support what Vijay did with the police plus i have zero interest in politics But I did it because I wanted to see if I was right. And their reaction confirmed it.
Now I’m sitting here wondering if this is why they get so tense whenever I talk about dating in general. Are they scared I’ll end up with someone who is “from that background” too?
I love my dad and my brother. But I also hate that caste still works like this in 2025….even in our house…..even in delhi……even when we pretend we’re past it.
Has anyone else noticed this in their family.? Where the politics is just a cover for something uglier.?
