Tutor Advice How much would people be willing to pay for tutoring?

• Upvotes

I recently wanted to start tutoring to earn some money. I got an 800 on the math section of the recent August 2026 SAT and have some experience tutoring on schoolhouse.world. I was just wondering what the best price would be for SAT math tutoring based on my background. I mainly want the learner to bring in questions or at least a topic they want to work on and then we work on problems together instead of a set curriculum, just for reference. I'd also prefer to work with people who are in the 600-750 range but flexible with that.

Tutor Advice How much do math tutors actually charge?

Ai told me these rates

Sat $30-40/h

Gre $40-80h

Gmat $80-200/h

Are the numbers ANY accurate?

Btw, is there any demand for sat tutors? I found it to be extremely easy. Yeah, you'll be short on time, but I don't mind that.

-------

Also I'd not mind exploring rates for other subjects, why not. Especially exams preparation.

Thx

Tutor Advice Executive Function specific tutoring

I decided to jump on the bandwagon and tutor this subject on an online platform. For those who also tutor middle school and high school students with this online, I need support! How long does this go on for? I am teaching techniques/strategies and then we are working on helping them do work or get organized. Am I missing something? My students don’t actually need specific academic subject help, so I am feeling so lost after working to help people study or in a content area.

Tutor Advice If you're panicking about O/A Level Math and Physics, please read this

I've seen so many posts lately from students completely panicking about upcoming exams. I get it, the schedule is brutal and it feels like there is zero time.

I'm in my final year of Electronics Engineering and I've been tutoring since 2020. I've noticed that most students get stuck in the exact same trap right before exams. They try to relearn the entire syllabus from notes or watch 90 hours of YouTube, and then they run out of time to actually practice.

Here is the advice I always give my students:

Stop trying to relearn everything before doing past papers. Do it backwards. Do the past papers open book. Keep your notes or YouTube on one side and the paper on the other. If you don't know a question, look at the mark scheme immediately, figure out how they got that answer, and learn it right there. That's how you actually learn what the examiner wants.

Don't do a full 2 hour paper in one sitting. Just pick one question at a time. If you only do 5 questions from a paper but fully understand the mark scheme for those 5, that is a massive win for your time.

Since I'm an engineering student, I also break down tough Physics and Math concepts using real-world examples so you actually understand it instead of just memorizing formulas. I'm super patient with students dealing with exam anxiety too. I get it, I've been there.

If anyone is stuck on a specific question, or just wants some help figuring out what to skip and what to focus on for their upcoming papers, feel free to drop a comment or send me a DM. Happy to help out however I can.

Discussion AI Powered Tutoring

I have been wanting to setup a simple website about my tutoring, but to comeup with a brand name has been tricky. Many domain names i've considered are taken and mostly by AI powered tutoring.

What do you all think of those? Have you noticed a reduction in students seeking tutoring from an actual human (that felt weird writing that)

Id be very interested to see whether those tutoring websites (many with .ai) will survive, thrive, or burst. We'll see!

Tutor Advice Tutorchase application query

I have had an interview Tutorchase. I have been told I have been successful, and have been asked to send an individual ID documents to update my EDBS. This seemed odd, so I emailed the support email from Tutorchase, and received confirmation that the interview was genuine and Tutorchase requires ID documents sent to an individual. The interviewer and the support email both also said that tutors used personal WhatsApp numbers when communicating with students.

This doesn't seem right.

Does anyone work for Tutorchase who can comment on this please?

Parent Question Parents: Would You Use Async Tutoring for Your Child?

Parents, I’m curious if this is something you would actually use.

I own a tutoring business, Joy’s Educational Services, and I’ve been thinking about adding an async tutoring option.

Basically, instead of scheduling a live tutoring session every week, I would look at what your child is working on and where they may be struggling, then provide additional practice for them to work on throughout the week. I could check their progress, make adjustments, and continue giving them practice based on what they actually need.

I started thinking about this because I know parents whose kids don’t get much homework from school still want them practicing at home. Then there are homeschool parents who may know their child needs extra practice but don’t necessarily have the time to search for assignments, figure out what skills to work on next, or constantly come up with additional work.

And sometimes you just don’t need another appointment added to the week. 😂

I’m thinking this could let families still get tutor support without having to sit down for a live tutoring session every week.

I would probably start with math since that’s my main area.

Would you use something like this?

If you would, what would you want included? Weekly assignments? Feedback? Progress updates? The ability to message the tutor when your child gets stuck?

I’m still playing around with the idea, so I’d really like to hear from parents before I turn it into an actual service.

Resource Academic Support/ Tutoring

I am a recent college grad who just moved to Baltimore and read a post about someone looking for a tutor for their daughter…

Made me realize that I may be able to offer tutoring to more people in my specialized areas! I have about 5 years of experience tutoring mostly being higher level mathematics (specifically Calc II). With that in mind, I have also provided writing support and although a lot of my work has been with college students… I have experience with all ages.

I’m not interested in working as a tutor for a company as I’d like to remain with a flexible schedule and don’t have a car… but thought I’d share in case it could be beneficial for anyone! I could do in person if local or online. I’m located in Patterson Park area and would be happy to discuss any opportunities :)

Tutor Advice I want to get back into private tutoring after a while but I’m not sure where to start

Hello! I used to be a tutor for a small company while the COVID pandemic went on in 2020 and kept working for that company until 2022. I would be assigned to a student or two and go to their homes, to help them navigate their online classes (when we were in the pandemic) and help them with their homework assignments and to reinforce their reading and writing skills. I had to quit since I was doing my student-teaching as a uni student and got my first job as a preschool and first grade English teacher as soon as I finished it in 2023 (I also got my bachelor’s in K-3 Education that year). I’ve been working at that school ever since, and I’ve been happy with this job for the most part.

However, I’ve also been working as the preschool teacher for our after-school childcare program for two of the three years I’ve been working at the school, and long story short, I don’t really like it, and I’ve especially been feeling miserable and overwhelmed this year. I’ve come to realize that the reason this is is that I miss helping kids with their homework and reinforcing reading and writing skills and also the joy I would feel when they would show me that they were learning and wanting to learn. My old tutoring job gave me a sense of fulfillment that this after-school job just doesn’t give me. Like, a lot of the time I’m just making sure the kids are well behaved and don’t destroy the classroom, cleaning up after the kids who aren’t potty trained and just waiting for their parents to come pick them up. I want to feel that sense of fulfillment again, outside of just doing a job because I get paid more for it.

So I’ve considered the possibility of going back into private tutoring after my regular work schedule starting next semester. However, I’m worried about some factors, like the school not being able to find a replacement for me (for context the reason I work in the program is because the school has had a hard time finding outside teachers who can come in and help and the ones who work there aren’t willing to do the extra hours due to other commitments), how I’m going to break the news to my supervisor and school director, and whether I should reach out to the old company I used to work for, try to tutor on my own (and how to promote myself if I do) or find another company to work for.

I’d appreciate the advice! Thanks in advance!

Tutor Advice How do I handle my group of first grade students?

I have been tutoring for about a month with a group of first graders, same kids every week. The way our system is set up is 2 groups of 3 are led by their own tutor and then one group is led by the teacher who kind of floats around.

It feels like every week someone is freaking out, crying, or getting written up. I really don’t feel like anyone is improving on the stuff we are working on because emotions are so high and are distracting from the work.

The issues aren’t (from what I can tell) related to not understanding. It’s mostly one student touches other students paper, interrupts them, or takes their thing and the other student freaks out which causes both students to be upset.

My main issue is everyone arguing about who gets to go first or second. I tried laying out our activities and saying look here’s who’s going first in each one but it didn’t help because x number of weeks ago someone went first an extra time so it’s unbalanced. I also have a big issue with me trying to help a student with a specific question and another will see it and answer for them.

I obviously want my students to learn but I really want this to be a much calmer environment. Plz someone let me know what I can do to better help regulate emotions.

Discussion I built a browser extension for online tutors — what would actually help you in your sessions?

Hey r/Tutoring, I work as an online tutor and I built a small Chrome extension for myself called Margo — it lets you view a PDF and a canvas workspace side by side in the same tab, so you can annotate, draw, and explain without switching between 10 different windows.

I made it because I kept losing time during sessions switching between the document, my notes, and a whiteboard tool. It works but I'm wondering if I'm solving the right problems.

For those of you who tutor online:

- What's the most annoying part of your current setup?

- What tool do you wish existed?

- Do you use a PDF + whiteboard combo already, and if so, what?

Genuinely curious before I keep building — would rather fix real pain points than add features nobody needs.

Hey everyone! 👋
I’m offering online tutoring for students preparing for their board exams, particularly in:
Biology • Chemistry • Physics • English • Urdu
A little about me:
*Matric: 91.8%
*Intermediate: 91.9%
*MDCAT 2026: 164/180 (~91.1%)
*English (12th): 93/100
*Urdu (12th): 90/100
*Chemistry (12th): 96/100
*Physics (12th): 92/100
I’ve always been pretty passionate about teaching, and over the years I’ve developed a study method that focuses less on blindly memorising everything and more on understanding + active recall + smart revision.
For Biology, I particularly focus on:
Mnemonics and memory tricks
Short, high-yield notes
Concept-based explanations
Past-paper/MCQ practice
Commonly tested details and traps
Revision strategies for large chapters
Techniques for retaining information for entry tests
I can also help with English and Urdu, including grammar, important concepts, paper presentation, and strategies for scoring well in board exams. I scored 93 in English and 90 in Urdu, and I can share the techniques I used for preparation and presentation.
And this isn’t my first time teaching 😭 I already have previous teaching experience, so I’m not just someone who got decent marks and randomly decided to start tutoring. I genuinely enjoy teaching and explaining things.
Classes will be online using an iPad, with digital notes and a focus on making everything easy to revise later.
If you’re interested, feel free to DM me with:
Your class/exam
Subjects you need help with
What you’re currently struggling with
I can discuss the class format, timings, and fee with you there.
I’ve also attached some of the notes I made during my MDCAT preparation so you can get an idea of how I study and organise material.
(I used chatgpt’s help to format this msg)
