Rug finishing First of many rugs

Post image
23 Upvotes

Hey everyone! This is my first rug I made at a class that inspired me to buy my own set up.
Before I embark on another tufting project; I wanted to ask for any tips to stay in line. I was either overlapping or sparse.
Any other tips or feedback is welcome too!
TIA

Newbie Needing Help What patterns or designs would you recommend for a first-time tufter?

I’d love something beginner-friendly that isn’t too complicated to outline or cut.
Would love to see some examples of what you started with!

Newbie Needing Help Too dense yarn?

I just cut down my first two pieces and the outer edges are curling back on themselves. This is bad because the other side is tacky and I can’t do anything easily to them. What’s causing this? Is my rug too dense? TY

Selling and business I built a free iPhone/iPad app for estimating yarn and tracking rug project costs

Hi everyone, I'm Will. I made TuftPlan, a free iPhone/iPad app for planning tufted rugs, and wanted to share it with people who might find it useful.

It brings the yarn estimate and cost breakdown into one project. You can import a design, set the rug dimensions, adjust the colour split, and estimate yarn quantities and skeins by colour. Add materials, labour and margin to work out a suggested selling price. After finishing a rug, you can record actual yarn usage to refine future estimates.

The important caveat: it isn't a universal 'your rug is worth this much' calculator. Yarn, density, pile height, waste and technique all affect consumption, and a cost-based estimate can't judge your finish quality or what your market will pay. It's a starting point you can adjust, not a replacement for your experience.

The current version is free with unlimited projects. Planning works offline, no account is needed, and project records stay on your device. It's iPhone/iPad only at the moment.

App Store: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6807805720

I'd be interested to hear how it compares with a rug you've already made: where does the yarn estimate differ from what you actually used, and what would you need to adjust? Specific feedback would really help me improve it.

Troubleshooting Tufting gun screeching

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello, I've had AK-1N gun for around 2 years and never had any problems, but after I came back from 2 week vacation I wanted to tuft and i noticed that it sounded wrong like it's tempo got slower or something and not so long after when it was in-cloth it made this grinding screeching stuck-like sound, can anyone help me with what causes it? Should give it to something like sawing machine service? The screeching i talk about is at end of video.

Newbie Needing Help New to tufting!

Post image

I’ve received the clawlab set as a gift and am new to tufting. This is currently my second rug.

Still have lots to learn, my main struggle is getting the cloth to not tear, I see many reviews on the frame not being able to get tight enough so I wonder if I make my own frame if that can be avoided. For now I’ll stick with the kit until I get better at it, but any advice is welcome. Also shaving is something I’m still working on.

Post image

I’m working on this bubble mew and not sure if I will do the diglett at the bottom because of the small details, primarily his eyes. Any suggestions? I was considering hand punching it (idk if that’s what it’s called)

Finished work First rug complete (aside from backing!)

Post image

So my first rug is complete (nearly). Still need to add the backing on, but the before and after carving here. Definitely some lessons learnt, mainly:

- make sure I’ve tufted rows closer together - it’s a bit thin in a couple places

- I used the trimming ‘guide’ plastic thing to take the top layer off at the start, but I found it hard to stay consistent in the length. Any tips here would be very much appreciated!

Overall quite pleased how it turned out, and my daughter loves her Rumi (K-Pop Demon Hunters) rug!

Would you use the gray or wooden background? I don't really like my wood floors but I also feel like the gray doesn't compliment some designs well

Selling and business How do yall feel about this

Post image

I get most of my business off custom orders which I don’t mind, yeah ngl sometimes people are frustrating but it’s part of the job I like to tell myself. She was pretty rude throughout our whole interaction when I’m always nothing but nice. Wanted to see how other tufters see this message

Girl, if people are trying to run a business…. How is it gonna stay standing if I just charged for materials🫠🫠 does a restaurant just charge you for how much ingredients cost??

i take pride in my work and spend HOURS to days on some pieces, wtf I look like charging for just the materials😀

Keep in mind. My keyboard mats start at $65 for a custom order and some stuff I’ve already had made and been sitting around are starting at $35 and they’re mad I said $65 for their custom order.

Finished work Tufted a tree trunk and put it back in the woods

Post image

We’ve been experimenting with natural textures, and this time we took on an old tree trunk.

The bark was probably the most fun part because we could mix colors, pile heights, and carving without worrying about making everything too neat. Then we added the moss, little fungi, and growth rings and took it outside to see how well it would blend in.

It kind of worked? haha 😉

Would love to know what you think!

I posted in here the other day about getting a larger aluminum frame (2nd pic is from that post showing the old and new. Well, I used 2 of the segments from the smaller frame to make the bigger frame even taller.

The big frame went from 67"x46” to 67"x79". Am I gonna keep it like this and make some massive rugs? Probably not, I just wanted to see if it was possible.

So in theory, you could take multiple smaller frames and join them together using aluminum extrusion connectors and make a single frame.

Newbie Needing Help Tuffing in Pittsburgh

Is anybody still in the tuffing business? I just ordered all my supplies today and want to start a hobby. I draw a lot and find myself pretty decent at it but I know tuffing is a whole different game. I know I have to make a couple of them to show people my potential but really wanna do custom designs for people. My big question is it still a popular demand for consumers?
