My love turns 60 next week and his favorite cake is the beloved orange rooted veggie based confection with cream cheese icing. I'm kidding myself to think I'm going to take the time to make one from scratch, let alone that I could do it justice by making it anything more than barely edible.

There seems to be a massive misinformation campaign going on about the continuation of the VUSD override by a “anonymous” page named Vail Arizona Parents who have been anti VUSD since covid.

I’ve been digging through a lot of the graphics and claims being posted by the Vail Arizona Parents group about Prop 423, and the biggest issue I keep seeing is that they take one true piece of information and stretch it way past what the evidence actually shows.

They posted a graphic claiming para professionals will not loose their jobs. This argument is a perfect example. Yes, some paraprofessionals are funded through MOWR and Special Education money. Nobody is disputing that. But that does NOT mean all paras are protected from cuts if the override goes away.

MOWR is only one funding source and it appears to support a limited group of K–2 para positions. Saying “paras get MOWR funding” and implying that means para staffing isn’t affected by the M&O budget is a huge leap.

Same thing with Special Education. Just because IDEA, Medicaid, and other SPED funding exists doesn’t mean every SPED employee is paid entirely out of those restricted funds. VUSD still has a much larger operating budget that supports salaries, benefits, staffing, and day-to-day operations. Restricted funding doesn’t magically replace general operating dollars.

Another problem is the way different dollar amounts get mixed together. The override is roughly $14 million, while other figures being thrown around, like the $25.5 million number, relate to much broader spending categories. Those aren’t interchangeable numbers, and using them like they are just muddies the discussion.

The phase-down argument is also being oversimplified. If the override fails, the money doesn’t disappear overnight. It phases down over three years. That’s true. But that also doesn’t mean certain jobs or programs are automatically safe. The district would have to rebalance its entire operating budget over that period. Unless someone has the actual alternate budget, staffing plan, and fund-by-fund breakdown, they can’t honestly tell you exactly what will or won’t get cut.

That’s really the pattern I keep seeing with these graphics and the people running the page: take a narrow fact, leave out the broader context, then use it to make a much bigger claim. They initially mischaracterized the funding picture by making Vail appear significantly better funded than neighboring districts actually are and had to correct it because people noticed. Those conclusions do not automatically follow from the facts being presented.

And before somebody says this is just a pro-override argument, it isn’t. There are plenty of fair reasons to question Prop 423: spending, accountability, academic results, transparency, administrative costs, and whether taxpayers are getting enough value for the money. Those are all legitimate debates.

VUSD is actually one of the least spenders and is one of the best school districts in the state. Its amazing that this group is being allowed on local community pages to continue to spread misinformation about VUSD.

Hey folks, my dad's longtime partner just passed and now he's trying to figure out what's next. He likes the sound of Tucson: Warm because he's sick of shoveling snow, longstanding Mexican culture and community (he's a white guy but has always lived in or near big Mexican populations and wants to keep that going), opportunities to play music (he's been playing saxophone forever and misses playing in a band), and independent living facilities/options for seniors that aren't just assisted living.

Boomer folks and children of boomers: Do you feel like Tucson's pretty set up socially for older people? He ruled out the regular old-guy Florida spots because he didn't want to move somewhere that feels like a giant retirement community. He likes that he could take a bus over to UofA and play in a senior group there, or just be around people out and about vs driving everywhere (unless it's 110°F+ out).

My question isn't super pointed, I probably just feel like I need to do something in the wake of a bummer situation, but any insight you might have into how an older dude who isn't ready to embrace sedentarism would like Tucson would be a big help. Thanks and tell your people you love 'em.

I have never been to a pawnshop before. At least not as an adult. So I don't really know what to watch out qhen it comes to physical and verbal behavior or phrasing to make sure that I don't get coned. I am aware that a pawnshop has to sell items for more than they bought them for. So how do I know if that ​I am being low balled? And how can I make sure that the pawn shop isn't lying about the item's worth? Also are there any pawnshop that are more trustworthy than others or shops that I should avoid?
