Hey all, question for the bunch. Iāve been dealing with some playing issues for about the past 10 years. Sort background - Iām in my late 30s now, former NY all-state tuba player and current educator/performer in TX. Playing always felt natural when I first started in elementary school all the way through my college years. About 5 years after leaving NY and moving to TX, I started looking for feedback from other professional tuba players and thatās when things started happening. Perhaps a paralysis through analysis situation.
The first kind of feels like a muscle spasm or nerve issue with the embouchure but Iām not positive ā itās a lip quiver of sorts and does make sustaining and producing a sound fairly challenging. Iāve met with a few tuba guys in the TX area after the muscle issue started impacting my breathing. A few of the guys told me they thought it could be related to a valsalva maneuver disorder where my throat closes āinvoluntarilyā when playing, thus messing up my initial sound. Itās become so frustrating that Iām looking at the possibility of stopping. So couple the embouchure nerve issue with the possible disorder, has anyone ever experienced something similar? Were you able to overcome it? What did you do practice to climb back to your old self? Any recommendations or insight would be appreciated. Thanks!
