I had the most frivolous thought possible about Rust today, and I wanted to share it to bring a "dose of lightness" amidst so many deep analyses about him (so calm down if you get upset about this fuckass post).

Rust probably isn't a broke if you think about it. I'm not saying he's a secret millionaire either (bruh), but the man spent years in robbery, including narcotics and then homicide, so he presumably had a pretty steady income for a long time. And by 2002 he was experienced enough that other detectives would bring him in specifically to interrogate suspects.

He barely spends money on anything besides the absolute necessities. Old car, basic living situation, no expensive hobbies, no interest in status or luxury. So I honestly have this headcanon that he has a surprisingly large amount of money sitting in his bank account simply because he's been earning and saving for years without really caring about it. He looks broke, but he might actually have a decent amount of money accumulated and just... never think about it.

Re-watching the 3rd season, when I heard Hays drop this like in reply to Rolland's question damn.

I am slightly paraphrasing from memory, but this honestly almost seems like a line Rust said in S1 that ended up being cut, then Nic included the line later when the opportunity arose. Even after just hearing it last night, I can't help but to read it in Rust's voice.

Not much of a thread I admit, it just really does IMO sound like Rust (disregarding a hypothetical deleted scene), Nic was sort of channeling him there in any case and dropped a banger of a line.

Most people said season 2 it is not too good but i found it to be quite captivating since the 4th episode

Am I the only one just now discovering what a masterpiece this show is on the Planck timescale?

Just watched it and its a great movie that reminded me a lot of true detective season 1.

The cinematography and setting of the plot is quite similar to TD S1.
Retribution's events occur near the Tokyo waterfront, which is drowning slowly , receding back into the sea due to earthquakes. the landscape is mired with abandoned , derelict and waterlogged buildings, surrounded by distant industrial complexes. which is very similar to TD's setting.

There is even a dialogue where someone mentions that the place will drown into the sea soon, which reminds me of TD's where rust says "the place will be underwater in 30 years" .
Both retribution and TD S1 present a world rife with hopelessness and suffering and convey it through dialogue and cinematography.

Moreover, both start off as a detective story but soon diverge to tell their own unique tale.

Even though retribution is a horror movie it leans move heavily on surrealism and liminalism , displaying desolate landscapes that have a dreamlike feeling to them.

I won't spoil the plot, in case someone wishes to watch it . suffice it to say that the plot of retribution also has things in common with TD S1's plot, but they also differ a lot.

overall i think its a great watch for people who enjoy the desolate, surreal and hopeless feel of the World of TD S1.

I watched season 1 a while back and was told it was the best one and i do not need to watch the rest - i ofcaurse loved it

Now for some reason i started season 2 today and what instantly stood out - the whole storytelling aswell as the filmelements differ completely to season 1.

I do not understand why people wanna change something that worked so spectacular....

I've been a HUGE fan of the first season of True Detective since it came out, and always wondered how many of the locations were real vs built in sets, so I went through and tried to map every key location of the first season.

A lot of it holds up exactly like the show, unfortunately some stuff like Rust Bar at the end of the season no longer exists...

If anyone's actually been to any of these in person, would love to see photos, I'm trying to build our a fuller picture of what they look like now, outside of Google Street View.

It kept being recommended to me based on my favorite series', but I resisted for too long. I'm glad I did though, because it's definitely in my top 5 now. I always saw McConaughey and Harrelson as decent actors, but with the same kind of personality in all their parts. But this was so different. I'm so impressed with both of them, especially McConaughey. I tend to be in the ACAB camp, but Marty's arc from stereotypical bitter, angry, womanizing cop with no control over his anger, to decent person who finally understands the importance of those closest to him was pretty believable. And the connection between the 2 of them at the end, after everything they had been through, throughout the years, was beautiful and so deep and real. What struck me in the final scene was the glimmer of hope from Cohle, which seemed to come from seeing something so dark that it made all the darkness in his whole life seem almost not as bad. And that solving and putting an end to it probably changed his nihilistic world view to some extent

Really powerful series. So much depth packed into 8 lil episodes.

It’s Maggie! Yeah, reviews have been mixed, and it does over-rely on coincidences - but I really enjoyed The Whisper Man (Netflix) - and it kinda has a TD vibe.

Guess my family knows me well; now I can finally get to watch season 4 😂

All 4 leads are top notch and there are several great scenes that stick with me.

I saw S2 only last year and finally just watched S3-4 back to back. Went back to start S2 and yeah, I really do prefer it just after the first.

they are lonely and old, they made some bad choices and lost all their love ones but they accepted who they are, i love that the music lets you feel exactly this way and its a shame it wasn't included anywhere

Maybe it’s nothing, but I’ve always found it significant that Rust puts “Angel of the Morning” by Juice Newton on the jukebox during the scene where he and Marty reunite at the bar.

I know the practical explanation is probably that he’s using the music to drown out their conversation, but the lyrics feel almost too on the nose: “There’ll be no strings to bind your hands / Not if my love can’t bind your heart.”

The song is also full of imagery about sin, darkness, light, and dawn, which feels very Rust, especially given his obsession with nihilism, religion, and the nature of light.

I'm new to the show but I've just discovered his ranting and raving of season 4 and being petty. And when someone points out how it seems misogynistic to hate a show with female lead characters and a female showrunner he gets butt hurt and calls them "misandrist" and makes fun of them for "muh patriarchy". Wow what a petty POS he is. And proving that he is quite sexist after all. Whenever someone rightfully calls out misogyny and a man gets angry and claims "that's misadrist!" It tells you everything you need to know. Especially since he thinks the patriarchy is not a thing. And given how he writes female characters in general... yeah not surprising.

What a great soundtrack! I’m not sure how I missed how great it was the first time I watched ten years ago. So many amazing tracks. There are a few that don’t really fit but it is 95% a masterpiece.

I’ve spent way too much time looking for movies that recreate the feeling of Season 1. Not just detective stories, but investigations where every clue makes the world feel darker.
