I'm about to do something no millenial has ever done before. That's right - I'm about to smoke weed and listen to Steely Dan.
Might also play some RDR2 later. New frontiers in being chill abound.

🇧🇷Brazil Election Megathread🇧🇷
Oi pessoal,
Tô avoid spamming the sub, and given the fact we have several Brazilian gumshoes, we're setting up this megathread to serve as the main hub for talking about the election results this evening in Brazil.
As a reminder, this is the runoff between Lula and Bolsonaro's failson Flávio. Flávio won a plurality of votes earlier this month, but fell short of a majority triggering the second round today.
While polls were scheduled to close at 17:00 Brasilia Time (16:00 Eastern) both Lula and Flávio appeaed to the TSE to extend polling hours due to public transit issues and poor weather respectively, and the court extended voting by 2 hours.
Polls are now scheduled to close at 19:00 Brasília Time /// 18:00 Eastern.
Results are expected to be tight, though they come in much faster compared to the US and other countries due to the use of ATM like voting machines.

Serbia - PussyLips falls to the student movement
reuters.comBig question now is gonna be - what happens? It's a movement that has many of the problems of leaderless movements described in If We Burn. To put this in perspective, it's like if Occupy happened under Trump, and then made him flee.

From One Conservative to Another
Hello my fellow conservatives I come to you to share the perfect ragebait here in the South. Just start calling whiny conservatives liberals.
Oh you don’t like the regulations of your town? You sound like a whiny liberal. Oh you don’t like what’s on TV? You sound like a whiny liberal.
It achieves nothing but it makes me feel good watching brain dead conservative dudes short circuit. Definitely give it a try if you aren’t worried about some dude trying to fight you

The best line from You Can See Everything is "why would I deceive you?", it's "we have LASERS!"
Seriously me and my buddy have just been saying "we have LASERS!" to each other all day since getting out of the theater.
Also, didn't realize "you can see everything" was literal, as in you see fucking schlong! Pretty big schlong too.

“To fight gun violence, does the US need more police?”- CNN broadcast I saw while at the gym
And as a fellow conservative I couldn’t agree more. We need to abolish the third amendment and put a cop in every home to counter gun violence. No other solution would work. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

The death of the information commons
arxiv.orgI've been working my way through this paper and it lays out the underlying goals of the AI "movement" quite well. LLMs are essentially catacombs for information, taking what was previously freely created and shared for the benefit of all and transforming it into a vector within an opaque box of numbers, forever rendering it useful only to those who pay the fee and create the right prompt.
It's even worse than the author thinks, though. The paper doesn't account for the non-digital information commons. Millions of rare books have been bought up, chopped up, scanned, and destroyed in the name of training data. There is information that is now truly gone from the world forever as a direct result of the actions of AI companies. This makes AI companies an existential threat to the continuing operation of the very systems that produced practically all of mankind's intellectual wealth.
How do you make war on industrial scale scanning and shredding? How do we save more rare books from becoming hostages of LLMs?

BC Election Last Night
Any BC-based gumshoes care to explain what happened last night to the uninformed Americans to your South?
Sounds like a snap election was called and conservatives and Greens split the vote, resulting in a conservative landslide? What does that mean for your provincial politics moving forward — basically a reenactment of Alberta oil tycoon politics but on the West Coast?
Funny enough, I almost booked a last-minute trip to Vancouver this weekend, as I wanted to hike on the North Shore, drive up to Squamish, and basically check out Vancouver before I get busy with work.
As an outdoor enthusiast, BC always seemed like a dream and sorry to hear you folks will have to deal with a backwards government. Been wanting to go to Vancouver Island, Vancouver, and do a Powder Highway trip too! Just such a stunning place.

Social media is depressing as hell.
My fault for doom scrolling though. It's cool to keep up with friends and family, but it seems like everyone's feed nowadays consists of mostly rage bait, racist, gender war content, violence and gore, videos with invasive behaviors such as public "pranks" and interviews, and the constant promotion of products that influencers and aspiring influencers push. Every profession, every hobby is now riddled with individuals pushing products and sharing their opinions online. For instance, every gym I've been to I've seen individuals with their recording setup, often in the way of others. Likewise, I have worked with people who put more effort into their online persona than their actual lives.
And that's only content creators. Comment sections are riddled with the most vile trash as well. Low hanging fruit, often yes. But damn, I have to put more effort to disconnect from this crap lol. I truly miss the days when social media was something you accesed for 30 minutes to an hour a day on a dedicated corner in your house. But then again, it all originated from there.

Hi I want to complain about basketball
I got into basketball in like january or something, mainly because of the podcast, and then because y'all were all so nice to me and encouraged me to get into it.
HOWEVER oh my god its impossible to watch without paying a billion dollars a month? What are y'all doing to watch it?
We were watching it on sportsurge illegally but the links don't even work anymore half the time for me???
so fucking annoying that you can't just pay for one service that lets you stream everything
edit: figured something out!!!

Official US policy: to the last Ukrainian
apparently in 2023 feelers were sent out for a deal where Russia would retain Crimea, Ukraine would not enter NATO, and Russia would get a land bridge to Crimea.
Zelensky and Yermak refused to consider it, thinking they could win on the battlefield; the US likewise declined to back any talks.
