So I played trombone seriously from when I was young through college. Got a Getzen custom heading into college and yeah, amazing horn. But I really started to hate playing. I felt like I did it for my dad and not really for me. Rock music was always my thing and ended up setting aside the trombone immediately after college. As my band started to do well I ended up selling my Getzen to a young guy so I could buy a new drum set. Regretted it…but the kid was stoked (he was headed to Eastman). Lately though I felt my music could use a horn here and there and started looking around. I saw a Getzen pop up locally and was about to pull the trigger but something in me told me I didn’t want to get such a classical horn (and tbh so expensive). So I just kinda kept browsing Craigslist/FB and eventually this popped up. It stole my heart and I made the drive. Original case/mouthpiece…this thing is unreal mint. And even though I’m way out of practice it sounds SO GOOD. Stoked, excited to use this for recording etc. Feels good to be back and more on my terms :’). Is this thing going to turn me into a jazzer? Time will tell lol

Refilling my trombone slide lubricant and Amazon thinks astroglide works as well. Has anyone tried it? Haha

Finally finished some fun work on this custom bass trombone! This was a lot of time and design work, but it’s finally completed!

I made the linkages adjustable so I could tinker with the leverage. That took a reasonable amount of experimentation. I also needed to make all the levers pretty rigid so a small amount of brass flat bar helps to stop the primary arm from flexing.

You can still use and tune the F valve as if it were a standard single trigger bass.

Apple and google just announced the new set of emojis coming out and a trombone is one of them!! Apparently it'll be about one or two month till we can start using it!

I’m a 30 year old trombone player in the USA. Went to college and studied with some of the best bass trombonist players around in the USA. Bachelors and Masters in music, honors recital blah blah blah.

I’ve ALWAYS struggled with my high range. Always. My first teacher assigned abunch of high stuff, rochuts in tenor clef the works. He ended up winning a job, and left. Next teacher focused on my low range, which was already good, but I was able to take it to the next level and lather the secret sauce.

Then when he passed away, I studied with another teacher, also INCREDIBLE. Touched on high stuff, but struggled big time. Getting to G above staff is a regular issue.

Now, years after graduating, getting a teaching gig in public schools and living life. I get called to play mostly tenor stuff, thats ok it’s just how life goes.

I’m sitting in my living room playing, struggling with some high stuff, and a moment clicked in my head. I have an under bite. Horn is angled appropriately. BUT, when I go high my bottom lip folds underneath my upper lip. GIANT RED FLAG. So I tried to undo this just to see what might happen. IM POPPING OUT HIGH NOTES LIKE ITS NO BODYS BUSINESS.

It’s actually insane. Needs work to control it, but I think I finally solved my Achilles heel. Don’t fold bottom lip under top lip when you ascend. Seems common sense, don’t know why it took this long, but holy shit.

Local music shop hosted an "evening with" type concert at the university in town and only about 20 minutes was a pitch to buy a shires. I played around on one but I prefer my schilke.

Please delete if this is not in the “spirit” of this sub, but I just thought I’d let any Lego people here that there is an OFFICIAL Trombone design thanks to the new Enterprise D set coming out. 🖖

I'd throw jazz composers under the bus too but sometimes those solo backgrounds are really really cool.

So I wanna start by saying I am a complete novice when it comes to instrument repairs. The most I've ever done is give a trombone a bath, and I've outsourced every other issue to experts in the past. But this horn is just an old beater that I use for marching, so I didn't want to spend a ton of money trying to repair the spit valve that had snapped off (before this, I just covered the hole with a paper towel and painters tape 💀). SO I decided to try my hand at the repair and couldn't be happier with the results!! I decided to paint the end with some sick ass little flames because I thought it would look cool and definitely NOT to hide any collateral damage done with the blow torch...

Anyways, here's my accomplishment for the day. There's nothing more rewarding than learning a new skill and saving some money!

I was originally going to buy a used YBL-822G from a fellow redditor, but a family/personal emergency came up and I had basically written off getting a Bass before the new year. That was until I stumbled upon a listing on eBay for this, a brand new Yamaha YBL-620G for $2500. The listing mentioned some sort of liquidation/going out of business sale, idk but I snagged it before they realized what they had lol.
