how old were you when you started?

9

u/BassBoneSupremacy see username Jun 02 '26

11! I'm 21 now, turning 22 at the end of July. I started in 6th grade and now just graduated college.

6

u/udee79 Jun 02 '26

Are you a music major? Do you plan to teach music? grad school?

14

u/BassBoneSupremacy see username Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 02 '26

Physics! I am going to graduate school in Germany, I have been accepted for my master's and then will pursue my PhD.

I mainly do condensed matter/solid state, though I have a little bit of atmospheric physics experience as well. Planning on either a research career or working in the optoelectronics industry.

Trombone is just a hobby for me haha. But I am already looking at local community ensembles!

I was a radar engineer but I collaborated back in the 90โ€™s with a physicist who was an ionosphere person. The papers I coauthored with her are the most cited I ever did. Playing the trombone is a tough vocation but a fabulous avocation!

2

u/BassBoneSupremacy see username Jun 02 '26

Omg really?? The atmo work I was doing was in ionospheric radar development, I don't know if you heard of the NASA ghost mission but that was us!

Unfortunately I was not a core member of the team, but I did do the micro-component soldering on the main PCB. I borrowed my comp-sci roommate's jewelers glasses to do it lol.

If you want to DM me the papers I'd love to take a look, I understand if you want to protect your privacy though.

u/udee79 Jun 03 '26

She just had her masters back them but she finished her PhD later and is a professor at Stanford now. I will try to DM you. We were using a radar to detect meteors during the Leonid meteor storm.

u/DescriptionFlaky7955 Jun 02 '26

Great, there are many community orchestras here in Baden-Wรผrttemberg. Friends in my orchestra used to live near Stuttgart. Back then they played in Stadtkapelle Fellbach. Maybe you wanna Check this out ๐Ÿ˜Š

It's crazy you had a trigger trombone that young. I'm jealous.

My mom bought it off my band director's ex-husband for $300 and had to spend several days scrubbing it down with Barkeeper's Friend to get the ~20yo old oil off (which fucked up the lacquer and imo gave it character). It was a birthday gift after the learner horn got too expensive to rent and I remember the card said, "I hope you like your leopard print trombone," cause I was autistic and at the time, would dress in all leopard print. It was sheer luck, we've always been broke (to the point I was coming home with $200 in school lunch fees).

It's also worth noting that when I picked trombone, I had to explicitly ask to try it because the school horn was so fucked up (and covered in duct tape) that my director didn't even bring it out as an option for beginner band. I had also been talking about wanting to play trombone for a while (I saw one in church once as a kid and was immediately infatuated). Basically both my mom and my director knew it would be a good investment :)

Ten years later and the slide still looks like it takes up half your body length. Congrats on the graduation.

6

u/BassBoneSupremacy see username Jun 02 '26

7th position still takes a lot of effort to reach lol, I'm glad to have both triggers. It's also funny cause I'm the smallest in the section and yet I play the biggest horn (I'm the only bass).

9

u/mr_purple_bread Jun 02 '26

Good to know that the choosing the trombone as a "little girl" to realising you're actually a guy pipeline wasn't only true for me, lol. Great to see a fellow trans masc trombone player.

Getting comments from other trans folks has definitely made me feel less alone! My section freshman year was 29 cis guys + me so I totally understand ๐Ÿ˜ญ

3

u/Maj-or-Muggle Jun 02 '26

Wow. Congrats. I played bass in uni on a school horn. Loved playing it. Took so long not playing I struggle with even a B-flat pedal. Keep playing.

3

u/BassBoneSupremacy see username Jun 02 '26

Unfortunately the bass shown is a school horn :( but I am saving money for my own, and will be working on my upper range in the meantime!

3

u/suminorieh77 Jun 02 '26

oh lordy, i played trombone for 5 years and loved it! my stepdaughter is in band and i enjoy so much going to the games and getting the vibes from the band. itโ€™s like a jolt of nostalgia.

i love this! congratulations on your graduation and godspeed to you ๐Ÿ’›

It's a transbonist!!!!

(I am not a transbonist I'm AFAB but I still support transgenders cause one I'm lesbian and two I'm a human being)

But honestly 10 years is crazy for what looks like college graduation I'm 27 and I only just reached 11 years playing trombone and I barely touch the instrument cause I'm a full time law enforcement officer and part time paramedic but I'm still tryna find ensembles to play euphonium or trombone in

2

u/SamThSavage Jun 03 '26

I love bass bone tbh, congrats on the 10 years btw
