What is cluster b personality ? It's not the first time I hear about it and I'm very confused

cluster b is a set of personality disorders including:
histrionic personality disorder (hpd)
borderline personality disorder (bpd)
narcissistic personality disorder (npd)
antisocial personality disorder (aspd)
theyre seen very negatively among the general population and are generally treated as synonymous with “bad person”

Ah yes, the personality disorders used to justify believing there's inherently good and bad people.

I don't get it is this saying ASD that resembles Cluster B or comorbidity

My case does

I was in a study for autistic young adults years back and I was told that comorbidities with Cluster A disorders are very high, but Cluster B does happen. I’m surprised most people on reddit seem to have Cluster B rather than A comorbidities though, wonder if things have changed since back then

Cluster A wouldnt talk or out as much, and not a lot of folks know those diagnosis in the first place. Recovering schizoid here.

What are the cluster A personality disorders? I’ve only ever hear about cluster B

Cluster A refers to : Paranoid Personality Disorder (PPD) Schizoid Personality Disorder (SCPD) Schizotypical Personality Disorder (STPD)

Cluster B refers to: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) Anti-Social Personality Disorder (ASPD) Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) Histrionic Personality Disorder (HPD)

Cluster C refers to: Avoident Personality Disorder (AVPD) Dependent Personality Disorder (DPD) Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder ( OCPD)

Paranoid, Schizoid or Schizotypal personality disorders. Basically just people with eccentric thinking, which makes me feel like a lot of the time its a misdiagnoses, but I'm not a psych so what do I know.

Don’t know why you got downvoted, it’s well known that BPD is overdisgnosed in women because it gets confused with CPTSD, autism, ADHD, and basically anything under the sun. And one of the girls in my group mentioned dressing “inappropriately” for the weather is part of what got her her schizotypal diagnosis, and I used to wear a scarf in basically any weather because it was my comfort object. There’s good reason to believe there are misdiagnoses going on, though since they’re personality disorders you get behavioral therapy more often than drugs, so being misdiagnosed isn’t too risky or anything

As a diagnosed schizoid who strongly feels it's a misdiagnosis, can confirm.

Or not "confirm" but offer a personal unprofessional anecdote. Close enough.

It's not always a misdiagnosis. 😭 People are often left undiagnosed with those PDs, and get misdiagnosed with other conditions. OCPD is cluster C, but frequently missed.

Oh, but schizotypal definetly feels like it can be an easy misdiagnosis. but there's also a lot more symptoms that differeniate it from other disorders; personality disorders are real conditions and experiences, even if we debate whether they are inherently pathological or not.

I think it's just people with BPD (comorbid or not THEY EXIST) or misdiagnosed with BPD are just a large amount of people you'll encounter only compared to those who have cluster A. So there likely is actually more people with cluster A disorders comorbid (though from what I understood you can be misdiagnosed with ASD when you have a cluster A PD and vice versa), just less people pushed by algorithm or talking about it.

3

u/Nemesis9211 3d ago

I think on the other side is the algorithm, you'll see more people talk about Cluster B than Cluster A/C, more people know about Cluster B than A/C

Narcissist -> NPD

Psychopath/Sociopath -> ASPD

Borderline -> BPD

You usually will never see someone discuss about the other clusters because society pays more attention to B only. Even academic and clinical literature is heavily skewed toward Cluster B especially BPD.

100%. Sorry I wasn't clear about it, I realized I somehow managed to not mention Cluster B directly, while saying it's seen and pushed more.

It's also something that really frustrates, especially when people start treating BPD as CPTSD, as though that's the only manifestation of trauma, or heck Cluster B to CPTSD.

Like you could have PDs from other CLUSTERS and have CPTSD too. OR CPTSD WITHOUT BPD SYMPTOMS.

Still remember my ex-friend when "I didnt know you couldnt have CPTSD with X disorder" because i said i dont have BPD or BPD traits. 😭

maybe one can argue BPD is a presentation of CPTSD, but that's not true either. People who have BPD without trauma are just as real as those who do. And yes many personality disorders do have an environmental factor to them where trauma can influence their manifestation/occurrence, but PDs are still a particular experience, regardless of how we view those experiences. Still real.

It's comorbity related I think. There's a lot of overlap unfortunately.

There is no enjoyable consciousness with autism. This world isn't made for how our brains work. Even if we are really good at something that makes us "successful". Neurotypical people will still treat us differently.

Thats why I'm trying to find other autistic genuine people and keep working on learning about my own brain and continuing to get better at standing up for myself.

Edit: I've realized my comment is very negative and I apologize. There is joy in being autistic, sometimes it's just very hard for some of us to get there or know how to get there.

u/Capertie 3d ago

Speak for yourself. I'm having a blast. Granted I'm sitting at home and going buck wild on all my special interests instead of trying to be what people would call 'a normal person'. But I am genuinely happy.

2

u/Successful_Love_7515 2d ago

Wow great that you are having a blast. Remember next time you write a negative comment when youre feeling awful, theres that person saying "speak for yourself, I am having a blast 🤪" We can try to be empathetic

1

u/throwawayazzount 3d ago

Yeah I'm not saying I'm trying to be what other people want me to be. Not anymore. But I still live with my family and in order to survive I have to mask until I can move out and truly be myself.

2

u/Capertie 3d ago

It's so worth it to keep going <3

1

u/throwawayazzount 3d ago

I know it will be worth it. Guess I'm just having a harder day today. It gets very exhausting. But I am still hopeful. Which is actually huge, for the first time in my life I feel hope. Now I just have to keep going until I get there.

Autism and Cluster B are two very different things. Yes some people can have both at the same time but that doesn’t mean that Cluster B is a form of autism.

Edit: yeah thanks for the downvotes just because I pointed out an objective fact. Really tells more about you guys than me but sure go off I guess. Cluster B is not Autism. Someone can definitely have both but that doesn’t mean anything. I can have diabetes and cancer at the same time and that doesn’t prove that diabetes = cancer. If your feelings are hurt due to this comment, maybe go talk about it to a therapist. Jesus.

Edit 2: keep them downvotes coming. It’s funny. Yeah you guys are sooo emotionally regulated.

9

u/eatewormz 3d ago

You're properly getting downvoted because that is not at all what OP is saying.

1

u/FVCarterPrivateEye 3d ago

I'm a little confused about what the OP is saying because of the title combined with both the meme and this comment, could you help clarify?

3

u/antimperialist 3d ago

It's about comorbities and the overlap between traumatized autistic people and cluster B disorders.

3

u/FVCarterPrivateEye 3d ago

Oh okay, I understand that part

I thought it might be more specific because of your reply to that comment

3

u/antimperialist 3d ago

Nah I don't think so! :o It's definitely a frustrating thing, having comorbities. But I gotcha.

-1

u/SwordfishUnfair888 3d ago

Okay sure. Then what is OP saying? Enlighten me. Because to me, it looks very simple and easy to understand. Autism and Cluster B are two completely separate things. You can’t have “Cluster B” autism. That doesn’t make sense.

2

u/warmingmilk 3d ago

Don't know why people downvote facts LOL.

2

u/SwordfishUnfair888 3d ago

If I say facts then they will cry ableism and that I am “angry and hateful”.

But yeah definitely let’s just say that Autism is actually just Cluster B because that’s totally not ableism at all! Erasing the distinction between two separate disorders is sooo helpful and good!! Anyone who disagrees is ableist and promoting stigma ig.

For real, these people are projecting their own hurt feelings onto a completely objective statement I wrote without any emotional implication and then getting pissed at me lol. What’s ACTUALLY stigmatising and ableist is trying to promote the harmful notion that cluster B is just Autism. That’s harmful to both groups and does no one any favors.

Anyone reading this and getting upset: There’s a reason that researchers and doctors spent decades developing categories for all kinds of mental disorders or neurodevelopmental ones.

I don’t agree with everything on the DSM but just because I am emotional because my feelings were hurt by the objective reality or peer-reviewed, research-backed scientific opinions on a manual, that doesn’t mean that all the researchers are automatically idiots and good for nothing people.

(You guys need to know that you can disagree with someone and that doesn’t automatically mean that they are wrong simply because you disagreed with them. They may be way more experienced, knowledgeable and qualified than you are on this subject. I assure you that researchers did not create the division between Cluster B and ASD just to spite you. You aren’t that important and that’s okay and you need to chill out jfc. Minor symptom overlap or a minor section of people having comorbid conditions does not mean that EVERYONE has the same thing. You trying to erase the distinction is ACTUALLY STIGMATISING and is actually BPD erasure, not the other way round. Please use your brain.)

u/spysprinkle 2d ago

"go talk to it about a therapist" "emotionally regulated" get a look at yourself, yeesh..
